to ask for your symptoms if you've had sepsis?

Hello,

I went to the GP this morning and was diagnosed with a chest infection. Have been given antibiotics.

I am just worried as I feel so unwell and this has been ongoing for over 10 days at the same level.

  • I cannot get warm no matter what I do. I am currently covered in goosebumps and my skin on my arms has a purple tinge to it. I'm thinking this could just be because I'm so cold though?
  • I feel so tired and weak, my muscles are just aching.

The other symptoms are usual of a chest infection, my chest is hurting and i'm coughing a lot, don't currently have a temp (36.1) atm.

I'm just curious on what your sepsis symptoms were? I don't normally get ill like this and it's just freaked me out.

Regarding the dh, men are notoriously useless in health matters. Trust your own judgement, not his.

I was shivering, sweating and couldn't open my mouth properly (later diagnosed as lockjaw, can't remember the actual medical term). I couldn't talk and was drooling. I had agonising pain in my head and neck.

111 told my husband I needed paracetamol and rest. He took me to A&E where I stayed and was admitted immediately for sepsis. It presents in different ways - if you are worried it's better to get checked!

Sapphire387 · 27/11/2023 18:19

Violent out of control shaking and feeling very weak... also hospital tests showed a high heart rate and high blood pressure (they normally say low BP for sepsis but it can rise first before plummeting). Did your GP do any of those sorts of checks - pulse and BP? I hope you feel better soon. If you're worried, do go and get checked again. x

Recently had sepsis after getting a UTI. At first I had uncontrollable shivers, it would take me about 3 hours to get warm then in the night I was sweating profusely. I also had a much lower appetite (not completely gone). Towards the time I went to A&E, I was really light-headed and shaky, high temp and high heart rate. If you’re worried please go to A&E so they can treat it promptly before it becomes more complicated!

SunsetApple · 27/11/2023 18:22

I echo the posts saying to go to A&E as it can escalate very quickly if you have it. Take water, snacks and power bank in case they keep you waiting or take you in. Good luck.

They didn't check my blood pressure. They checked my oxygen levels which were okay at 93 (lower than usual for me but i do have a chest infection).

It is just the pure exhaustion, aches and being so cold, plus the purpleish skin but I am not sure if that is just where i am cold.

Still waiting for DH to get back for the kids before i make a decision

I had sepsis from an infected gallbladder. I remember having an attack which just didn’t stop despite taking strong painkillers. My whole body was aching, shivering and generally feeling very unwell. I took myself to A&E, they told me I would be waiting 6 hours and I took a seat (on my own). They must have got me into triage sooner as I looked pretty horrendous.

I was admitted on the ward, but it was during the night when things got scary. It’s all a blur now, but I remember the health care assistants doing obs in the night and then turning on the light and others being around me. I’ve never felt so cold but had a very high temperature. I was delirious and aggressive towards the staff, I remember trying to punch the nurse who was wrestling the sheets off me as I was clinging on. I was shouting all sorts of nonsense at the fan they had blasting towards me. It was awful, I really felt like my body wasn’t mine. I also had hallucinations while receiving treatment in the days following (I had an emergency op to take out the gallbladder)
very scary and I’m just so lucky that I trusted my instinct to go to A&E, as I’m usually the sort of person who doesn’t like to “make a fuss”.

Cold and complete and utter exhaustion.

I was admitted with suspected sepsis I was vomiting up everything, even water, my urine had been brown but I was no longer peeing, I had a very high temp and heart rate but blood pressure was low and I was just out of it, I had no idea how ill I was even though I had been hallucinating at times. I just wanted pain relief but GP called and ambulance for me. In the end it was an infection in my gallbladder that was affecting my liver and pancreas, I didn't have sepsis just yet but was on the brink of that or my gallbladder rupturing. If I hadn't sought medical intervention when I did I'd probably not be here now. If you are worried OP get checked out, better safe than sorry.

cherryscola · 27/11/2023 18:34

I took ibuprofen for the pain about 30 mins ago and now my temp has shot up to 38?

This is the weirdest thing i've ever had

missnevermind · 27/11/2023 18:35

I was hot and cold, shivering and sweating. Talking nonsense. Nightmares while sleeping and also strangely while awake. The doctors sent nurses to check, I think they were called fast response or similar.

PostItInABook · 27/11/2023 18:36

What’s your heart rate? If it’s over 110 beats per minute at rest, combined with the lowish oxygen sats, rigours, temp, source of infection, lethargy, aches/pains, generally unwell I would go and get seen sooner rather than later.

Chickenkeev · 27/11/2023 18:37

When i had it, i was already in hospital (not the main building), but they stuck me in an ambulance in the middle of the night to essentially cross the car park. So it was serious enough. Long enough course of IV anti Bs to make it better. Great craic altogether!

Res_Ipsa · 27/11/2023 18:44

Please, please go to the hospital and use the word 'sepsis'. I've had sepsis which nearly killed me. I was shivering and couldn't get warm, and my skin was pale. My midwife told me I was fine but I wasn't l.

Your temperature is only one of the indicators of potential sepsis. For me, my blood pressure was very low which was the huge give away.

Noone on here can tell you if you have it. 111 will tell you to go to the hospital.

Ignore your husband and go. Sepsis gets nasty very quickly.

hazandduck · 27/11/2023 18:45

I had it from a bad mastitis infection. Temp was about 39. It was very sudden and severe and I was shaking so violently that it was like it was inside me and I couldn’t stop it. Sick/retching. White as a sheet. Two days earlier I had cried at a nurse because even though I was ‘fine’ physically I had a weird feeling I was going to die, she said it was normal as a mum with a baby to feel like that (she was 7 months!) Ended up in hospital two days later.
In the hospital I could hear a song that is personal to me playing, I was so out of it.

I would say that feeling of impending doom
is a symptom so if you feel something awful is going to happen to you I’d listen to it and seek medical attention.

Returnsreturnsandmorereturns · 27/11/2023 18:47

Is there anyone who can look after the kids? You potentially have a life threatening illness and how quickly you get treatment is very important now. Now is the time to post on the class whatapp group or ask your nice neighbours if they can help out will you go to A and E.

Pixiedust1234 · 27/11/2023 18:50

GO TO A&E NOW!! You are borderline, next stage is confusion and unable to think so you would need to rely on a laughing DH. My DD was borderline on Saturday and if we had waited another hour she would have gone into sepsis shock. She cannot remember being in hospital at all despite walking and talking. Please go.

cherryscola · 27/11/2023 18:53

is 38.5 now despite the ibuprofen.

DH not back, mum on her way, going to take me now with the kids in the car

L1ttledrummergirl · 27/11/2023 18:53

My temperature dropped, I physically couldn't get out of bed, was vomiting black liquid and my sats were so low that when the out of hours GP saw me, he wheeled me straight to A&E (luckily on the same site) where they had the crash cart ready.

It was the strangest feeling ever, knowing I was dying but unable to articulate my symptoms.

Namechangedagain3 · 27/11/2023 18:54

Freezing cold no matter what I did.
Didn’t wee all afternoon
Felt something was ‘off’ which led quite swiftly to me feeling that I was seriously
unwell. 2 hours later I’d have been dead if I hadn’t rang 111 who sent an ambulance.

cherryscola · 27/11/2023 18:55

thats's exactly it, I just don't 'feel' right. Have a lot less patience right now too

Best to get checked out so. Sepsis is unforgiving.

VeryQuaintIrene · 27/11/2023 18:59

Uncontrollable shivering for a bit, breathing very shallow, uncontrollable black diarrhoea and utter exhaustion before I finally went to the hospital at which point my kidney had temporarily packed up and I had only half my heart function. I waited too long and ended up in the ICU for 5 days, so please don't be like me and go and get checked out without delay. Wishing you well.

NashvilleQueen · 27/11/2023 19:01

When you say you're very cold would it be like the rigors? If so then I think you may have an infection.
