To avoid Manchester Christmas markets

Firstly they’re all selling the same items, woolly scarves, laser cut decorations, sweets, biscuits, tat etc etc. The food and drink areas are beyond packed, huge lines waiting to buy grossly overpriced average food, nowhere to stand or sit to eat the food. It’s freezing cold, damp and smokey with some very dubious smells thrown in.

The weekends must be traveller meet ups because there are lots of of traveller teenagers, some fighting, screaming and causing general mayhem and mischief in Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, they closed the doors in Selfridges it got that bad on Saturday. The traffic in and out of the city is gridlocked and the public transport is packed with half cut pensioners stinking of bratwurst.

The crowd control is non existent, the whole place feels hugely unsafe given how many people are drunk from the mulled wine. It’s just a generally abysmal experience especially for young children. Midweek early on is a quieter more calm experience but otherwise avoid them like the plague unless of course you don’t mind the madness. I live in the city so unfortunately if I need to do food shopping or nip to the shops I can not avoid them.

I read that 102 coaches, full of Bath Christmas market visitors, arrived on Saturday! And this is only a portion of the number of visitors on any one day!

I was in Bath on Friday (not for the market), and I was surprised to see how many areas it now occupies (it used to be contained in one large patch). However, I hear this hasn’t helped with overcrowding etc, sadly. Many report about how it is dangerous.

Perhaps GWR will do something about the Christmas market overcrowding at Bath Spa Station. Queues to get trains last weekend were apparently over 2 hours long and that was with the trains mainly running on time...

Caveated with I haven’t been for a couple of years, but there used to be a quieter bit of the markets around Spinningfields, you might be fine.

Might be quieter in the daytime. Spinningfields is away from the throng so maybe stay around there? The Great Northern is on Deansgate so you could have a look around there?

Wow! That is madness. I agree, something needs to be done to improve this (and fast!).

Went on Saturday- would normally have gone in the week but friend had no leave remaining.
I'd say a key issue is the packed trains. We left mid afternoon and they were still arriving with standing room only.
I bought food items for Xmas. Had a bratwurst and mulled wine. Wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be having not been there for a couple of years.
Interested to read about the alternatives on this thread.

I remember one year we went on Saturday, just for a drink and maybe a quick something to eat. This was in days when most of it was in Albert Square. We entered and quickly realised there were so many people the whole place was at a total standstill. We decided as we were already in there than we should head to a bar on the other side of the Square instead - it took us 30 minutes to cross the square from one side to the other.
