To avoid Manchester Christmas markets

Firstly they’re all selling the same items, woolly scarves, laser cut decorations, sweets, biscuits, tat etc etc. The food and drink areas are beyond packed, huge lines waiting to buy grossly overpriced average food, nowhere to stand or sit to eat the food. It’s freezing cold, damp and smokey with some very dubious smells thrown in.

The weekends must be traveller meet ups because there are lots of of traveller teenagers, some fighting, screaming and causing general mayhem and mischief in Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, they closed the doors in Selfridges it got that bad on Saturday. The traffic in and out of the city is gridlocked and the public transport is packed with half cut pensioners stinking of bratwurst.

The crowd control is non existent, the whole place feels hugely unsafe given how many people are drunk from the mulled wine. It’s just a generally abysmal experience especially for young children. Midweek early on is a quieter more calm experience but otherwise avoid them like the plague unless of course you don’t mind the madness. I live in the city so unfortunately if I need to do food shopping or nip to the shops I can not avoid them.

We went a couple of years ago, I was disappointed as there wasn't much to it.A few foodsralls, some decorations and a load of tat.

Years ago when dh was working in Germany , stayed for a week and walked up to the Christmas market every day. Lovey mulled wine and snacks and beautiful decorations,.A proper German Christmas market is hard to beat

I wonder why the Christmas market in say Colmar or Munich isn’t like this - they’re really nice. What’s different about the UK ?

Cathpot · 27/11/2023 10:55

I walked past the Edinburgh one on Saturday late afternoon and it was mobbed ~ queue round the block to get in, and then once in it looked like a huge tightly packed crowd shuffling round lots of in-shed stalls - I don’t know how you would shop without having to fight to each stall. Just getting past it was stressful enough . I was due to go with older teen DD and we took one look at just the queue and decided against it and I definitely wouldn’t have gone in with smaller kids.

ohhayyy · 27/11/2023 10:56

I'm going this week 🤣

topshotta · 27/11/2023 10:57

Why do people jump at the chance to say something nasty about travellers

Oganesson118 · 27/11/2023 10:58

I've always found Leeds to be nicer. I know it's not happened for a few years (this is the first since 2019) but it feels much less hemmed in and quieter, even on a weekend.

Someone has suggested Piece Hall but that gets rammed too and because it's in a courtyard (and they've packed way too many stalls in) it feels very claustrophobic.

JenniferJuniper80 · 27/11/2023 11:00

You do you op.
I live on the conurbations of Birmingham and love visiting our overpriced, crowded, full of party goers Christmas Market.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 27/11/2023 11:00

Backtobacky · 27/11/2023 09:20

I went this weekend and had a lovely time 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Backtobacky attitude can be everything. I'm glad you had a good time!

@Onand A lot of people have/are putting in a lot of time & money to the event. Many stall holders relying on the market to keep their business going.

its not nice of you to try & put people off going. I'm hoping you're not just bitter from missing out on getting a spot yourself or something. Just let people make their own minds up.

Even the major European Christmas Markets are full of 'tat' or at least pretty much all the same imported stuff. The food is usually better, but still €€€€€.

its been many many years since Christmas Markets were a local gathering of independent crafts people.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 27/11/2023 11:02

Sounds like the Birmingham one, which I drove 2 hours for a couple of years ago. Absolute shite.

It was 90% beer stalls, 10% shite. Nothing authentic or appealing in the least. Never again. I'd like to go to an actual German Christmas market in Germany, but fear they may also be rubbish.

TheQueenofOnyx · 27/11/2023 11:16

It’s closed for this year, but I’d recommend the Chatsworth market. Absolutely gorgeous setting, lots of interesting independent stalls, busy but not packed.

lincolngirl1097 · 27/11/2023 11:18

I went Saturday and it was mayhem!! Far to busy to be enjoyable

evtheria · 27/11/2023 11:21

Noting down recommended ones. I read about one at Haddon Hall, anyone been? Sounds more like an expensive one where you buy gifts or house decor, but could be v atmospheric.

I personally enjoy the Maker Markets that pop up in Sale, Didsbury etc. You can usually buy a decent real wreath and some cake, and enjoy a hot toddy too.

Crushed23 · 27/11/2023 11:28

I went this weekend and go every year (have family who live nearby). They’re busy, unoriginal and expensive but I always have a great time. But then I love all things Christmas 😁

My favourite part is the pop-up bars down King Street.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 27/11/2023 11:28

I was in the city centre this weekend, it was carnage. Absolutely cheek by jowl from the Cathedral all the way through. Police were there (a smattering), along with paid hi vis security, who to be fair didn’t look like they’d be any use at all in the event of anything actually kicking off (early 20’s lads, 10 stone wet through). The atmosphere was fine but it was just crushingly busy.

user1471447924 · 27/11/2023 11:33

Shhhh don’t tell people about the nicer Christmas markets in the Peak District! They’ll all go there and spoil them too!

The Cathedral grounds still have some nicer stalls from independent sellers but I agree, the stalls on the main street (I think it’s New Street?) are just commercial tat.

Calendargirly · 27/11/2023 11:36

I live in Manchester and I've only been in to the markets once or twice. Where do you live if you absolutely cannot avoid them when leaving your house??? I'm in the city centre and barely notice them. I certainly wouldn't choose to frequent them.

timtam23 · 27/11/2023 11:39

When the Manchester markets first started they were still crowded but there were a lot of stalls selling hand made crafts and I thought the food was nicer. Now they're so busy and seem focused on selling very generic food and alcohol. Went in last year for an unrelated event and the area felt a bit intimidating (midweek, around 10pm so not really late). I now avoid the city centre when the markets are on as it's too crowded

I reckon the busier the market gets, the more expensive the stall bookings are, so cheap imported nonsense rather than handmade crafts keep the profit margins higher for sellers.

I don't like large crowds so never go. It doesn't sound enjoyable in any way whatsoever.

StoneTheCrone · 27/11/2023 11:52

A friend went on Saturday and said if was awful. Ridiculously busy with fighting, shoving snd pushing. Cheap tat on all the stalls. Poor quality food and a general air of menace. She came home at noon.

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 27/11/2023 12:18

The last few times I've been to Manchester on a weekend there have been huge gangs of teenagers causing trouble. It's a shame as I love Manchester.

johnworf · 27/11/2023 09:18

I was going to say avoid but if you live locally then you have no choice.

Personally, I don't like them. When they first started they used to sell lovely items for gifts and the food was reasonable. Now it just seems to be overpriced stuff you can buy anywhere and the food prices are extortionate.

We used to go every year when we lived there (we left in 2011) and it was fabulous - lots of continental stalls, a good mix of craft and other stalls and excellent, very varied food and drink at reasonable prices.

We didn't go back until 2021 - and it was just AWFUL. Hardly any continental stalls any more and just a load of very expensive tat and hideously expensive food and drink.

dottiedodah · 27/11/2023 12:27

It seems to be a universal problem TBH! We live on SC in a seaside town ,and the "German" market is not great. Overpriced naff objects that could be bought anywhere a lot cheaper , Beer and sausages and little else to eat.We did attend a nice Craft Fair at a stately home which was really good .Im sure if I was in Germany it would be a lot nicer and more authentic
