To avoid Manchester Christmas markets

Firstly they’re all selling the same items, woolly scarves, laser cut decorations, sweets, biscuits, tat etc etc. The food and drink areas are beyond packed, huge lines waiting to buy grossly overpriced average food, nowhere to stand or sit to eat the food. It’s freezing cold, damp and smokey with some very dubious smells thrown in.

The weekends must be traveller meet ups because there are lots of of traveller teenagers, some fighting, screaming and causing general mayhem and mischief in Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, they closed the doors in Selfridges it got that bad on Saturday. The traffic in and out of the city is gridlocked and the public transport is packed with half cut pensioners stinking of bratwurst.

The crowd control is non existent, the whole place feels hugely unsafe given how many people are drunk from the mulled wine. It’s just a generally abysmal experience especially for young children. Midweek early on is a quieter more calm experience but otherwise avoid them like the plague unless of course you don’t mind the madness. I live in the city so unfortunately if I need to do food shopping or nip to the shops I can not avoid them.

A few people have mentioned The Piece Hall in Halifax which I agree is a beautiful place but my DD went to their Christmas Market yesterday & she came away after 5 minutes as she said it was just too packed!

Vickythevan63 · 27/11/2023 22:35

I think they avoid it getting too busy by insisting you pre-book your parking. Then when it is sold out that's it.

But that isn’t true, as it is free to visit Chatsworth market for people arriving by public transport, and those willing to park outside the estate, or at the southern car park, and walk to the market.

Cleverly, their website doesn’t state this, they just talk about “booking your tickets”.

But anyone can visit on the day without a ticket, if arriving via public transport or parking elsewhere.

Noting down recommended ones. I read about one at Haddon Hall, anyone been? Sounds more like an expensive one where you buy gifts or house decor, but could be v atmospheric.

I personally enjoy the Maker Markets that pop up in Sale, Didsbury etc. You can usually buy a decent real wreath and some cake, and enjoy a hot toddy too.

I believe the one in Heaton Moor is very good too.

If you had just said avoid Manchester though I'd have been right there with you

lol. That's pretty much how I feel. I went 4 months ago (driving) and it was fine. Went 2 weeks ago and two new one way systems had been put in place during that time. I can't keep up!

This sounds like Bath Christmas Market, which is dangerously overcrowded to the point of being unable to move. People come from all over only to be 6 deep in crowds and unable to see any of the stalls. Awful place.

Yeah the one in Nottingham is rubbish too, same stalls each year, selling same stuff which is crap. Nothing is handmade or different, just like a normal market.

Nottingham also has the ridiculously expensive skating rink, wheel and bar which take over most of the market square.

BouleBaker · 28/11/2023 08:20

A few years ago our town centre Christmas market was very similar to those I have been to in Prague, Bruge and Zurich. Lots of stalls with Christmas gift worthy things and a few with tat and a few food stalls. However, even abroad the stalls got very repetitive. So you'd walk round a corner and there would be ANOTHER salt lamp stall and chopping board stall. This year it is 90% food in our local one, although to be fair there is lots of variety in the food even if it's expensive.

I find the makers markets and small Christmas fairs far better. Exbury gardens near us do an amazing one for instance. Much more relaxing and more fun.

Totally agree.
And everything is so expensive.

£15 on a weekday, £25 at the weekend.
£10 and £15 if you go after 3pm
Obviously the more of you in the car then the cheaper per head.

I think if you have also booked to go round the house or see the light show then you get free parking.

Yes it seems a lot but it means that while it is busy it is not absolutely crammed, so a much more enjoyable experience.

Someone tried to sell one of the weekend ones in my local fb. They got pretty short shrift.

Chatsworth find a way to make money out of every single thing. Even 15 quid during the week is a rip off. Charging you to park so you can spend more money😂

And if your paying to look round the house and gardens which are also extortionate then parking should be bloody free.

They pay all their staff MW.

I used to work in Bath and Christmas market weeks were hell. I wish I could have worked from home for the duration.
I'll avoid all of them, forever.

I agree. I got trapped in one trying to get across the town centre on foot recently. Even going around the edges rather than through the centre, it took me 3 times as long to get to the station. Absolute nightmare.

Shhhh don’t tell people about the nicer Christmas markets in the Peak District! They’ll all go there and spoil them too!

That's what I always think when nice, quiet places are recommended for anything, why encourage people, Tell them and they will come, to paraphrase!

Mind if I put the location and recommendation on a billboard just outside of Manchester City centre? Hopefully people will opt to go for the quieter markets instead of the chaotic ones here…🙏🏻🫣

Hopefully the extra footfall for these nicer markets means more money for the lovely traders, and a better chance of them carrying on...?

NutellaNut · 29/11/2023 09:48

Haven’t been to the Manchester Christmas market, but could say the same about Birmingham and Bath - dangerously overcrowded at times and stalls mostly selling the same old tat. I’d like to go to a real one in Germany or Austria next year. Any recommendations?

charmedtomeetyou · 29/11/2023 09:57

The racism towards travellers on your OP is appalling. I have reported it. Not acceptable.

Cumbria has the Ulverston Dickensian festival on over two days. It was very busy on Saturday but a bit quieter on the Sunday. Nice local stalls, cheese, vodkas, kids clothing. Yes, some food very overpriced but cakes etc were not too bad. Lots of errr eccentric people dressed up as Victorians but also people on stilts, Christmas fairies, and for some reason rhubarb. Even my 10 month granddaughter looked at them with concern. Crusty type groups banging drums and a parade. Free parking within walking distance too. The local shops are nice too, special mention to Forage and Foliage's lovely rustic wreaths. And no, I don't work there! Mind you, some very rude visitors as I struggled with a pushchair. But the same everywhere I guess. Manchester sounds my idea of hell.

I was just about to comment on Bath's Market when I saw yours. Why it has to be all crammed around the Abbey baffles me. It's over crowded and downright dangerous.

ETA Bath Rugby team are at home against Exeter on Saturday so it's going to be even worse when the supporters are trying to get the ground.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/11/2023 10:16

They’re awful: huge crowds can be alarming for young children.

I read that 102 coaches, full of Bath Christmas market visitors, arrived on Saturday! And this is only a portion of the number of visitors on any one day!

I was in Bath on Friday (not for the market), and I was surprised to see how many areas it now occupies (it used to be contained in one large patch). However, I hear this hasn’t helped with overcrowding etc, sadly. Many report about how it is dangerous.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 29/11/2023 12:06

I was in London on Saturday and they had a Christmas market of sorts, with the same mass produced over priced items, in Trafalgar Square and yes, it was heaving. Winchester is my local market and again, stuffed into a space far too small, with the usual overpriced, mass produced items, interspaced with some lovely traders, but really not a joy to shop, so I avoid and go to locally organised community fairs, which craft traders can afford to attend and which offer far nicer unique items. I've been to the markets in Berlin and the only one I liked was in a large square with churches at either end, probably because of the setting. I think mulled wine at Winchester was a ridiculous price, so not sure anyone would get drunk on that and as for the parking, use the park and ride if there are any spaces, or be prepared to be shocked at the cost, seven days a week now! I'd rather that local authorities run proper markets, affordable to traders and made sure that a variety of traders were available all year round, with a special effort at Christmas to decorate the streets.

ScremeEggs · 29/11/2023 12:10

Love Christmas markets.
"Half cut pensioners stinking of bratwurst.." 🙄
You sound ridiculously judgy and precious.
I love looking round all the craft type stalls, and having a mulled wine and bratwurst.
Just don't go if you like them

Ah shite. I have a lovely day planned in Manc on Friday for my friends big birthda (we are from Yorkshire ssshh) we are doing People's History Museum, Afternoon Tea at the posh place in Spinningfields and then was going to meet DS1 (who is in uni that) for a Christmas Market look a round. Neither DS or I drink so what should we do instead of the Christmas Market? Any ideas Spinningfields way?

Hamburg. Prague, Koln are all awful, I really wouldn't go to any of those,(cough, cough)!

Caveated with I haven’t been for a couple of years, but there used to be a quieter bit of the markets around Spinningfields, you might be fine.
