Giving baby random surname?

Family background is religious, patriarchal in terms of family names so daughters don’t pass on surnames but daughters are meant to maintain their maiden name and not adopt a man’s name. However in this family the previous generations apparently had no clue about naming conventions so everyone got a random surname that wasn’t the actual family name anyway, the daughters got titles for surnames.

WIBU to give baby a random surname too?

I would follow the standard convention or legal requirement if there is one, of the place I was in.

I don’t fully understand the convention you’ve described but if it’s your baby I’d give them your name, something I regret not doing. One consideration is just that you will be easily identifiable as family for passports, communications with schools etc.

What does 'given titles as surnames ' mean? I'll admit I'm baffled by this convention.....

As a genealogist, your family sounds like a total nightmare!
