Lost Desserts

Sticky toffee pudding now stands astride the nation, from John O’Groats to Lands End. It’s everywhere. But it’s the grey squirrel of desserts. It’s victory has come at a terrible price, namely the wiping out of other desserts.

When did you last see a spotted dick or a jam roly poly? Or anything with suet? Or even a sponge that wasn’t bloody sticky toffee?

Don't get me wrong, I like the sticky toffee, but I’ve been to places where it’s the only dessert on the menu.

So what lost desserts need to come back? Is it even time for BLANCMANCHE to return??

You need to get yourself to Norwich Assembly rooms , they hold regular supper clubs and do several dessert ones every year - there's a school pudding one this year too

Omg I need a spotted dick! Not even thought of that in bloody years.

Ofcourseshecan · 26/11/2023 23:17

Apple Charlotte. My mum used to make it. Like apple crumble but made with leftover bread. I loved it.

Haven’t seen tiramisu for a while either, but maybe I’m not eating in Italian restaurants enough.

theduchessofspork · 26/11/2023 23:20

How true.

I wonder if the pudding club still exists (that’s not a euphemism, they were a passionate pud loving membership club).

Syllabub, crumble, treacle tart, fool, apple pie, rice pudding, posset.. I’d like to say lemon mousse but that was weird even in the 80s.

I have to say that although I like the IDEA of sponge pudding, the reality is hot cake to me and thus ultimately wrong, but I had a certain fondness for the chocolate sponge and chocolate custard combo that didn’t exist outside institutions, and didn’t in fact contain any chocolate.

theduchessofspork · 26/11/2023 23:21

Autumn and summer pudding - now you don’t get enough of that. TART.

Celticliving · 26/11/2023 23:21

I would die for bread and butter pudding right now..

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 26/11/2023 23:24

I would happily eat a sticky toffee pudding. Wouldn't order any of the other desserts mentioned on this thread (with the notable exception of tiramisu). So maybe there's a reason none of them are on menus any more...

boudiccathecat · 26/11/2023 23:30

Ginger sponge. Treacle (golden syrup) at the bottom of the pudding bowl and a teaspoon of ginger in the pudding mixture. Once it’s been steamed and turned out the syrup pours over the top. With custard this is was my favourite pudding . See also jam sponge.

HomelessAngua · 26/11/2023 23:32

Sussex Pond Pudding, blackbottom pie..

Get down to your local Asda. Bakery has jam roly poly, apple pie, apple crumble, cherry pie, trifles, tiramasu, cheesecakes . You will have to make your own spotted dick though.

I can't believe you would be so unkind as to post this at this time of night when not all of us have access to these ingredients.

  • NEED TO EAT THIS RIGHT NOW.
Doingtheboxerbeat · 26/11/2023 23:34

My DM could probably make most of these, I mean she makes a wicked crumble with about 10inchs of crumble and half an inch of apple ☺️.

MadeOfAllWork · 26/11/2023 23:39

I think that many of us have stopped having puddings at home with dinner, for many reasons. A lot of the puddings mentioned are home cooking rather than restaurant fare.

But when was the last time you saw crème caramel?

I have some supermarket versions in my fridge right now but haven't seen one on a menu for years. I used to make them for a restaurant I worked in during the early 2000s, I couldn't make enough of them, they were the most popular dessert on the menu.

What ever happened to rum babas? Or black forest gateau? I don't like either, but they used to be everywhere.

Cheesyfootballs01 · 26/11/2023 23:46

Black Forest Gateaux

Funnily enough I was looking to book a Christmas meal today and there was Sticky Toffee Pudding on every menu!!

PastorCarrBonarra · 26/11/2023 23:46

Rum babas were mentioned on Strictly this evening funnily enough.

Death by Chocolate. Haven’t seen that in a menu since about 1998.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 26/11/2023 23:53

Steamed puddings are definitely out of fashion. They're not difficult to make, but if this year's Bake Off was anything to go by, they're not often made anymore. A lot of people don't like the thought of suet - this has come from animal fat being deemed to be bad for you for about 30+ years.

Legendairy · 26/11/2023 23:56

My favourite was the Sarah Lee Double Chocolate Gateaux, my parents used to hold loads of parties and always had them. Haven't seen them in years!

There's a video of a tiramisu drawer on Facebook.

teenagetantrums · 26/11/2023 23:57

Litteraly all the desserts mentioned here were on the menu when l cooked in a care home. The residents get dessert with lunch and supper. I think dessert is not really a thing in now unless it's a special treat l know we rarely eat them at home.

Mansionscoldandgrey · 26/11/2023 23:58

Roly poly pudding made with Nutella and a tin of caramel went down rather well with DH 😋

AdaColeman · 27/11/2023 00:05

Some we used to have years ago, that you never hear of now...
Poor Knights of Windsor
Queen of Puddings
Lemon meringue pie
Lemon surprise sponge (would create its own sauce as it cooked)
Apple snow

And in restaurants....
Crepes Suzette (often finished the flambée at the table)
Baked Alaska
Zabaglione

As a substitute for ginger sponge, Costa gingerbread muffins are to die for.

JanglyBeads · 27/11/2023 00:09

Was looking at a Hairy Fat Bikers cookbook yesterday and it had spotted dick and jam roll poly! Reader, I bought it on the spot.
