Lost Desserts

Sticky toffee pudding now stands astride the nation, from John O’Groats to Lands End. It’s everywhere. But it’s the grey squirrel of desserts. It’s victory has come at a terrible price, namely the wiping out of other desserts.

When did you last see a spotted dick or a jam roly poly? Or anything with suet? Or even a sponge that wasn’t bloody sticky toffee?

Don't get me wrong, I like the sticky toffee, but I’ve been to places where it’s the only dessert on the menu.

So what lost desserts need to come back? Is it even time for BLANCMANCHE to return??

I made Queen of Puddings yesterday

cheap as chips and bloody delicious

Charles11 · 27/11/2023 00:18

My friend made an Eve's pudding recently and I'd only vaguely heard about them in childhood.

I've always wanted to try Parkin. It's such an unusual name but I guess that's more cake than pudding?

MovedonfromMartin · 27/11/2023 00:19

Arctic roll
Ice cream surrounded by a thin layer of jam and rolled in a sponge wrapper.
Not seen it since I was a child.
Not sure I'd even like it now but I'd like the opportunity it to try!

Yes to Queen of Puddings.
Also Lemon Meringue Pie and Summer Pudding.

We love bread and butter puddings. We once made nigellas ginger jam bread and butter pudding and we tend to make one over the Christmas break using some of the giant panettone that a relative buys us every year. It's amazing.

Getabloominmoveon · 27/11/2023 00:28

Mmm agree with pp about the cruelty of posting this so late at night. I’m going to be dreaming about puddings.
Thanks for the old school reminders. It’s been a long while since I had a good bread & butter pudding, so will be making that soon. Also not a huge fan of the steamed pud, but do love making a nutmeggy custard tart and creme caramels. Lemon posset (easiest pud in the book) was today’s dessert at a friend’s lunch.

I think that many of us have stopped having puddings at home with dinner, for many reasons. A lot of the puddings mentioned are home cooking rather than restaurant fare.

But when was the last time you saw crème caramel?

When I made it for DH about a month ago... I can't stand the stuff!

My favourite was the Sarah Lee Double Chocolate Gateaux, my parents used to hold loads of parties and always had them. Haven't seen them in years!

I think Sara Lee as a brand went out of business. Sainsbury's do the closest equivalent that I've found but often seem to sell out quite quickly around Christmas.

Steamed puddings are definitely out of fashion. They're not difficult to make, but if this year's Bake Off was anything to go by, they're not often made anymore. A lot of people don't like the thought of suet - this has come from animal fat being deemed to be bad for you for about 30+ years.

Atora have been making a vegetable version for donkey's years. I have never used beef suet. I'm put off making things like suet puddings and spotted dick by the ridiculously long cooking times and that possibly applies to a lot of people. My husband would love me to serve up some steamed puddings (he raves about his late mother's apple duff - I have no idea what that actually is) but as he's a "doesn't touch the sides" kind of eater, he's quite happy with a quick and easy crumble.

DH makes THE BEST bread and butter pudding. Uses his mother's recipe but he's my ade his own tweaks and it is divine! ❤️

My mum makes an amazing crème caramel every Christmas, we have it after Christmas dinner - much less stodgy than Christmas pud!

Had an Aldi Jam Roly-Poly yesterday. It was delish. Spotted Dick I haven't seen for yonks. Used to be all over pub menus.

Anyotherdude · 27/11/2023 01:17

Yes to Queen of Puddings, but no mention so far of baked rice pudding or semolina with jam? Delicious!

Wibblebits · 27/11/2023 01:21

My granny used to make this mousse chocolate and lemon flavor she used to get the packets to make it from booths the supermarket I can't find it anywhere now.

I love chocolate chips being added to a bread and butter pud. And lashings of clotted cream to serve.

Dustyblue · 27/11/2023 01:21

Any type of steamed pudding. We had the jam one mainly. So good.

I wish I had one of those steaming-pots with the clipped lids. Might have to go look for one....

Was browsing a James Martin cookbook when I saw This. Bit fiddly but I might have to try it some day.

Arctic roll recipe - BBC Food recipe

James Martin's homemade retro classic ice cream swiss roll. This arctic roll is well worth the effort, but feel free to cheat with a shop-bought jam.

I still make queen of puddings, but have to make 2 versions. My dh and 1 of my ds like it extra stodhy l, so double the breadcrumbs, while another ds and l like it as per the recipe so it is lighter. We also like lemon meringue but have disputes over how much lemon. It used to be a regular in cafes and restaurants, but definitely not now. Bread pudding is a firm favourite as well. If we were talking cake, then lardy cake. There used to be a bakery just outside Slough that sold amazing lardy cake, but I never see it anywhere now.

Best eaten with wensleydale.

Wrongsideofpennines · 27/11/2023 02:16

Tiramisu is definitely still on the menu at restaurants. I had hoped after the Queens Jubilee dessert that trifle might make a bit of a comeback but it doesn't seem to have done.

My mother had a glut of eggs during lockdown. She didn't know what to do with them all so filled her freezer with bread and butter pudding. How I wished she had been able to share them my way.

Manchester Tart for the Northern win

Anyone?

Tintackedsea · 27/11/2023 02:25

Macadamia and caramel cheesecake made for my dad's birthday. My mum made a pudding every Sunday when I was a kid.

Recipe here

My mum used to add a layer of sliced banana under the custard

That takes me back to school days in the 60s.

You need to get yourself to Norwich Assembly rooms , they hold regular supper clubs and do several dessert ones every year - there's a school pudding one this year too

Brilliant place!
