Lost Desserts

Sticky toffee pudding now stands astride the nation, from John O’Groats to Lands End. It’s everywhere. But it’s the grey squirrel of desserts. It’s victory has come at a terrible price, namely the wiping out of other desserts.

When did you last see a spotted dick or a jam roly poly? Or anything with suet? Or even a sponge that wasn’t bloody sticky toffee?

Don't get me wrong, I like the sticky toffee, but I’ve been to places where it’s the only dessert on the menu.

So what lost desserts need to come back? Is it even time for BLANCMANCHE to return??

We are the only family in Britain that doesn't like Sticky Toffee Pudding....

My friend made an Eve's pudding recently and I'd only vaguely heard about them in childhood.

I've always wanted to try Parkin. It's such an unusual name but I guess that's more cake than pudding?

Proper parkin, dark, gingery and sticky is a family must for bonfire night, I use an old Yorkshire recipe.

I think Sara Lee as a brand went out of business. Sainsbury's do the closest equivalent that I've found but often seem to sell out quite quickly around Christmas.

Sara Lee frozen cakes still exist in Australia, though the brand is now in administration here. I bought a chocolate one a while ago and am sorely disappointed that it is nothing like the gorgeous SL chocolate gateau of my childhood / teenage years. So so good!

Manchester Tart for the Northern win

Anyone?

I am taken back 60 years to school dinners!

User2123 · 27/11/2023 04:10

Jam roly poly and treacle sponge I make fairly regularly, so they aren't lost to us! Take minutes to prepare then put them in the slow cooker. Eve's pudding is also a family favourite we make whenever we have surplus apples. I always opt for sticky toffee when eating out though, I have tried making it at home but it never tastes quite as good

Apple Charlotte. My mum used to make it. Like apple crumble but made with leftover bread. I loved it.

Haven’t seen tiramisu for a while either, but maybe I’m not eating in Italian restaurants enough.

Apple Charlotte with custard...Divine! Goodness me, I could do with a bowl of that right now...Malvern Pudding is another lovely one.

I used to love those Heinz desserts in a tin, you could boil or microwave them. They did a spotted dick, jam, treacle and sticky toffee

Elastica23 · 27/11/2023 04:27

Trouble is with things like spotted dick and other puddings, they are so filling as to be a meal in themselves.

They are really nice but I wouldn't enjoy them after a main course meal in a restaurant or pub.

HighlandCowSaysBooNotMoo · 27/11/2023 06:35

PSA... Lidl do a damn good spotted dick

NigelHarmansNewWife · 26/11/2023 23:53

Steamed puddings are definitely out of fashion. They're not difficult to make, but if this year's Bake Off was anything to go by, they're not often made anymore. A lot of people don't like the thought of suet - this has come from animal fat being deemed to be bad for you for about 30+ years.

There was a steamed pudding technical a couple of years ago, I think it was out of one of Paul's recipe books, and they massively underestimated the time for that one too. I remember at the time thinking "nobody will make that mistake again" but it looks like the collective Bakeoff memory is pretty short!

Manchester Tart for the Northern win

Anyone?

We used to get Manchester Tart as a school pudding in darkest Surrey back in the 1970’s and early 1980’s; loved it and, as my dad was from Manchester, it makes me think of him!!

The other one was butterscotch tart - yum!!

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 27/11/2023 07:03

I think lemon posset is my Christmas dinner dessert along with baileys cheesecake.
Thanks for this thread OP!
I regularly make crumbles and sticky toffee ginger pudding cake. Ds thinks there should be pudding after dinner each night but we don't have them that often.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 27/11/2023 07:15

My favourite desserts are cherry pie, rhubarb pie or crumble and apple strudel; sadly I rarely manage a main course so rarely bother making or serving dessert nowadays.

Morrison’s Asda and Sainsbury’s all have twin packs of individual servings of Spotted Dick for those that said they never see it! Most supermarkets do the twin packs of desserts including rice pudding, sticky toffee, syrup sponge, chocolate sponge, mini crumbles - Sainsbury’s do 3 different ones, plus a spiced apple sponge and a raspberry sponge too.

Aunt Bessie’s do a good Jam Roly Poly, apple crumble and apple pie; all of which are available at Iceland. Sainsbury’s or Tesco do a vaguely half decent bread & butter pudding (but they’re always lack the definition of sliced bread inside that my mum’s homemade one had and seem more like a blended mixture).

I miss decent milk puddings such as macaroni, tapioca and semolina; the stuff in a can doesn’t come close to the originals my mum made!!

NannyR · 27/11/2023 07:37

We used to have something called Creamola that was like a mix between custard and ground rice pudding, it came in an orange box and you mixed it with hot milk - it was delicious, especially with lots of nutmeg.
Another dessert which we had a lot in the 80s/90s was a mousse dessert that came in a sachet like angel delight, but you mixed it with water, not milk, it came in lemon and apricot flavours. I think it was made by Greens (def wasn't the Birds one) - does anyone else remember this? I can't find any trace of it online and beginning to think I might have imagined it!!

Gazelda · 27/11/2023 07:50

I've got a jam roly poly in my freezer.

And I adore blancmange. Especially the skin.

I used to make a traditional pudding every Sunday after the roast. I'm going to dig out my recipe books and resurrect some old favourites.

I adore the apple pie my MIL used to make. Her pastry was extraordinary. Sadly she died before I was able to get her to pass on her recipe.

Delta's recipe in her Christmas book is wonderful. Usually the family come here for Boxing Day but this year I'm treating then to something different but I still have to make them for Christmas Day instead.

That's going way back, you had to pierce the tin I think or it would explode!

I loved Manchester tart at school, I also liked the Ginger cake with white custard. Anything with pink custard. Queen of puddings, Jam Roly poly.
Lots are on the menu at work (nursing home) crumble at least once a week, creme caramel, blancmange, Arctic roll, there seems to be a hot pudding with custard daily at lunch and a cold pudding at teatime.

SabrinaThwaite · 27/11/2023 08:32

As my dad was very much a pudding man, my mum used to make one for every dinner - cherry pie (I loved that tinned cherry pie filling), plum plate pie, treacle tart, lemon meringue, bread and butter pudding, apple crumble, apple and blackberry pie. I seem to remember her queen of puddings being made with cubes of bread rather than breadcrumbs (migh be misremembering).

Occasionally we’d have butterscotch Angel Delight or tinned tapioca with jam if she was short of time. Viennetta or Arctic roll was a treat.

Ate a spotted dick recently in a cafe !

Key lime pie

shockeditellyou · 27/11/2023 08:55

Bit niche but my college at Cambridge still does hot puddings like this every lunchtime. I think the death of the works canteen put paid to a lot of puds like this, sadly!
