To think that I might kill someone?

Sooo, Xmas cakes are in the oven. Feeling quite pleased with myself and tackling the washing up only to find that the Kilner jar that the wine soaked fruit were in has a 3” hole!

This was only evident when it was taking a long time to fill the jar, to give it a soak then wash. I lifted it up and turned it round to find water running out.

I’ve found what looks about half of the missing piece of glass but wonder if the rest is in the cake?!

Am I likely to bump someone off with a slice of xmas cake? 🤔

Oh 😳🤣

Theunamedcat · 25/11/2023 12:00

Yeah glass and Christmas cake not a good combination

LegoDeathTrap · 25/11/2023 12:00

I would not serve the glass shards cake. Sorry.

BMW6 · 25/11/2023 12:02

Oh crap OP. 😫

Catsfrontbum · 25/11/2023 12:06

That’s a real shame. Can you smash the cake up once baked and turn it into Christmas Cake ice cream

Healthyalltheway · 25/11/2023 12:07

No you can't serve that and that the risk there are shards in there.

Cluedo (Christmas edit) spoiler alert - Maggiethecat the Cook, in the Kitchen, with the Cake

With glass in it? Confused

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 25/11/2023 12:23

Sorry for your cake but no you can’t serve that. There’s putting a coin in a Christmas pudding but glass in the cake is going too far 😂

NunsKnickers · 25/11/2023 12:28

Oh what a nightmare!!

I'm so sorry OP. We're baking our Christmas cake today, so you have my sympathies.

No, because there might be small pieces of glass still in there.

Takethehintandfuckoff · 25/11/2023 12:30

You might do, can you somehow find out which part of the cake it’s in and be strategic about it?

CrabbiesGingerBeer · 25/11/2023 12:31

Before doing anything else, I’d suggest doing another hunt for the glass piece - if you find it, you can be sure it’s not in the cake.

Lougle · 25/11/2023 12:31

Oh you're heading for the next big headlines after the Victoria Mushroom Murderer.

Such a shame for your Christmas Cake, but I think you need to turn the oven off and save your electricity.

Lidl sell pre-soaked fruit if you want to get a shift on with the next cake.

margotrose · 25/11/2023 12:32

That cake needs to go in the bin.

SkaneTos · 25/11/2023 12:33

Something like this happened in the tv series "Friday Night Dinner".

When Martin dropped the stew on the floor, scooped it up with a magazine and served it.

Grandma ate a button.

😆

Maggiethecat · 25/11/2023 12:35

The glass is about 3mm thick and the retrieved bit fits one part of the hole a bit like a jigsaw. But even if I did find the other missing chunk it’s hard to say if there would have been shards. Think it’s likely though, being the nature of glass.

😫

I guess the real question is how much do you like your family?
I can definitely see an argument for serving this up to the in-laws if they don't behave during the main Christmas meal.

It seems most likely that putting the jar in the washing up water is what broke it. Surely if the boozy fruit was in a broken jar, you would have noticed a flood of liquid?

ditalini · 25/11/2023 12:40

Surely though you'd have noticed if the break happened when it was full/being emptied because it would have dripped everywhere?

Agree though, you need to find the missing piece or you can't use the cakes.

SixPastTheHour · 25/11/2023 12:40

Is this an attempt by OP to get rid of her MIL? She may have been hoping Mumsnet would say it's fine, so this very thread could have been part of the evidence that it wasn't intentional 😀

I've never seen that episode!
The one I was referring to was when the sons brought their girlfriends home for the first time, and there was some broken glass in the food that the mother had cooked, and everybody knew except her, and she didn't understand why nobody wanted to eat it...

I had completely forgotten about that!

I love Friday Night Dinner. 😆
