To think I shouldn’t have to stop my run to walk past a horse?

This has happened twice now. Out for a run and the horse riders have asked me to stop running while I go past their horse!!

I’ll put this in context- daughter rides, I used to ride. When passing a horse or pony I’ll go wide and slow, or stop and wait at a passing place on narrow roads (often while the riders amble up at a slow walk deep in conversation with their fellow riders, 3 abreast….and without a hint of thank you). When I’m out with our dog I’ll make sure she is on the lead while we pass. but being asked to stop and walk???

Putney Bridge Jogger anyone? Was willing to nearly kill someone so he didn’t have to break his stride! I think that is the mentality of some people on this thread.

Anyway I had an uneventful hack today after coming off my horse on Saturday - not caused by anyone jogging behind him but a herd of startled cattle thundering past the fence/hedge line (could hear them but not see them). Got a hat cam video but not sure how to upload on here.

Everyone we met was lovely, slowed for us, put their dogs on leads, removed camouflage gear when asked to show he was human😵‍💫(think it was a wildlife photographer - horses really unhappy about him hiding in the bushes!), thanked everyone and wished them a good day. Only one person was not happy when we asked if her dog was ok with horses before we went past them (she made no effort to put dog on lead and continued to throw a frizbee for it so we wanted to check before we put ourselves (and anybody else)in danger) got a really stroppy answer back🤷‍♀️ There’s always one, but most people we meet are kind, helpful and happy to see horses.

I just googled that, horrific.

Reminds me of a guy that always used to get off at London Bridge? Or maybe Elephant and Castle, anyway, he was quite tall and would walk down the platform with his headphones in, shoulder barging people out the way rather than shuffle along like the rest of us. He would do it every day. I longed for him to do it to someone that would confront him over it tbh.

Maybe you breathe really loud?

How did he never come forward! What a dick

Anybody who creates mess in a public place should be responsible for it. It’s disgusting. If you think it’s acceptable to leave piles of shit in the road, then you are equally disgusting filth.
Why do dog owners get fined, yet this goes unpunished, despite being potentially hazardous as so slippery. It’s just vile.

It's transparently obvious that many of the posters in this thread are "retaliating" for the dog polls/threads, in absolutely feeble attempts to be "clever".

sunglassesonthetable · 27/11/2023 18:56

we can’t all be kind and considerate, thankfully the majority are, which is lovely.

Dear me @Snowflakeslayer . You surpassed yourself there.

I've got nothing against sharing.

Horse is walking down one side of the path.

I'm walking or running down the other side of the path.

We're both giving each other as much space as possible, as you do when you pass people.

All fine.

At least that's a slight step forward from banning all horses from public bridleways I suppose. But, if you happen upon a previously bombproof horse with a responsible rider, that's never given any cause for concern but just had 7 shades of hell scared out of them by some chancer on a motorbike illegally coming down a bridleway behind them and is understandably rattled and on edge in the moments following, I'll assume you won't want the rider to give you polite warning that you might want to slow down a bit if you're running past them from behind? Long sentence sorry but it's been a long day.

muggart · 27/11/2023 20:27

You shouldn't be running outside if you can't do it responsibly.

A pair of cars approach each other down a narrow country lane. One tucks into a small passing place. Should the other:

a) crawl past at walking pace?
or
b) floor it?

Countingto10, yeah great anecdote- that happens all the time - joggers are forever pushing people into traffic aren't they?!

Not just into traffic, they send children and elderly people flying. Not to mention startling horses...

Snowflakeslayer · 27/11/2023 09:15

All over the road and stinking, yes. It’s no different to any other excrement. It’s disgusting, and horse riders who think it’s acceptable are just as disgusting.

How about you start your own thread instead of hijacking this one and then we can all ignore the tedium.

Eatbetterthisweek · 27/11/2023 23:26

Insurance will cover any injuries you sustain. Keep running and see what happens.

Poodleydoodley · 27/11/2023 23:30

Snowflakeslayer · 27/11/2023 11:32

Actually, the complete opposite is the case, I’m talking about people should be more considerate. How did you not pick that up, maybe the same way you don’t think shit should be picked up? I’m out of here, like talking to children.

You keep promising to go and yet hours later here you still are. Shit the door on the way out.

Elastica23 · 27/11/2023 13:05

10mph? I was going more like 5mph when I was "running"! And more than two metres away, on the opposite side of the road. And could be seen from miles away, I wasn't behind the horse.

If you were running at 5mph you were barely even jogging and not wanting to walk for a few seconds to be considerate becomes ever more ridiculous.

@Famousperson2023 and @Elastica23

Presumably you’d be fine with me galloping past you on a bridleway then? You wouldn’t want me to slow down so I don’t risk frightening you or you getting hurt if it made you jump and twist your ankle?

After all, bridleways are public rights of way designed for horses, clue being in the name.

As I said up thread, slowing down would inconvenience me as much as it would you slowing down your run as I compete and my horses need to be fit and there’s limited places to do fast work.

No, I slow down because my desire for a gallop doesn’t trump your right to feel safe.
