To think I shouldn’t have to stop my run to walk past a horse?

Famousperson2023 · 25/11/2023 05:44

This has happened twice now. Out for a run and the horse riders have asked me to stop running while I go past their horse!!

I’ll put this in context- daughter rides, I used to ride. When passing a horse or pony I’ll go wide and slow, or stop and wait at a passing place on narrow roads (often while the riders amble up at a slow walk deep in conversation with their fellow riders, 3 abreast….and without a hint of thank you). When I’m out with our dog I’ll make sure she is on the lead while we pass. but being asked to stop and walk???

Can anyone tell me if not clearing up after horses is legal in the UK?

I can understand that historically society relied on horses so we just has to put up with the horse shit (which is far sweeter smelling that dog shit), but is there a legal reason why horse shit isn't seen as litter? Was there an historical exemption? Or doesn't it fall into the legal definition of litter?

Its very simple:

  1. Take a shovel and bucket
  2. Scoop
  3. Carry to garden
  4. Put on compost heap
  5. Apply to roses 12 months later
  6. Appreciate blooms

I have been known to go back and occasionally collect droppings for my garden, especially if my horses have pooped outside someone’s house, but as you can imagine, it’s difficult to carry a shovel and bucket whilst out riding!

And there’s nothing remotely disgusting about horse shit. Most horses eat a very pure diet.

Snowflakeslayer · 27/11/2023 09:35

It’s not the calling that’s the issue, it’s the ‘being’, if you can’t understand that, then I pity you. I’m not responding any further, as it’s futile.

Nomoremudplease68 · 27/11/2023 09:40

Bloody hell. I feel sorry for the horse population of the uk and their owners reading this thread. There’s no consideration for these beautiful, unique animals. And no understanding of their needs and how they function naturally.

Horses have as much right to exist in the world the same as humans you know, and trust me, the majority of riders prefer to ride where other road users are not, if it’s at all possible to do so.

I’m riding on public roads atm simply because the bridleways near me are partially under water and quite dangerously slippy under foot.

Unlike dog crap horse poo is not toxic.

It's just grass. It doesn't hurt anyone or anything.

Homebaby · 27/11/2023 09:46

@Sayitaintso33 it is perfectly legal not to pick up horse droppings. It is not hazardous in any way.

horseyhorsey17 · 27/11/2023 09:52

If you're horrified by horse droppings, don't live in the country. Or visit it. Stick to the towns where you belong. They're much less clean and far more polluted but oh well.

sunglassesonthetable · 27/11/2023 09:55

Honestly @Snowflakeslayer I hope you're having a lie down with a dose of smelling salts.

Whatever your personal foibles are no one has to pick up their horse poo. Perfectly legal. No harmful bacteria, as it is mostly grass. The rain or sun will deal with it.

Avert your eyes if you see any. Or clutch at a pomander if you're worrying about smells.

Thank goodness the actual law is more sensible than you on this.

sunglassesonthetable · 27/11/2023 09:58

Write to your councillor/ MP @Snowflakeslayer I'm sure they'll take you very seriously. 🙄

Snowflakeslayer · 27/11/2023 09:58

I didn’t say it was illegal, I said it was primitive, selfish and disgusting, which it is.

Snowflakeslayer · 27/11/2023 09:59

Why would I do that? Are you 5?

sunglassesonthetable · 27/11/2023 10:02

You're not really helping yourself here.

Do you go round telling off mounted police?

sunglassesonthetable · 27/11/2023 10:05

Pretty much first port of call if someone has such an intense objection to laws affecting their environment .

How old are you? Old enough to send an email?^

Homebaby · 27/11/2023 10:05

@Snowflakeslayer go and live in a city if it offends you, just make sure it's not one with a mounted police division. Though I'd sure love to see their reaction should you start whinging at them about not picking up their horses droppings.

How is digested grass disgusting? It doesn’t have a foul smell, isn’t toxic and disappears very quickly. Wait until you find out what’s used to fertilise your food!
Keep your inane shit in the city and I’ll keep my horse shit in the country 😊

@goldbar A horse and rider need 2m space and passing at less than 10mph to mitigate risk to all. That's indisputable. Ignorance is not a defence I'm afraid. Nor is "I had headphones in and was distracted by checking my app for my run time."

Getting bored of posting it, but....

[Riders] should respect your safety, but you [pedestrian] should take care not to obstruct or endanger them. Always remain aware of your [pedestrian] environment and avoid unnecessary distractions.

Why do you think 2m and such a low speed is specified? What might happen when that space/speed is not adhered to?

How about horse people take responsibility for do their best to manage their side of the risk, and people on foot take some responsibility for being aware of the environment they are entering into and take appropriate precautions. Such as not to potentially startle half a tonne of horse that has very likely recently become startled by some other idiot's ignorance?

Otherwise you are quite literally giving the majority of horses a life of misery/death sentence since they are then unable to get the exercise they need and are confined to going round in circles for the rest of their lives.

We then may as well go the whole hog and tarmac over bridleways to avoid trip hazards (we're almost at that stage so that cyclists can use them, making them less suitable for horses) and ban all domesticated species/farm machinery from the countryside where there are footpaths and bridleways, incase there's an accident involving them?

What about making bridleways just for those with bridles and those okay with the risk/willing to respect them (like the majority of users) and footpaths just for people on foot who are not okay with it?

OP is going wide and low so she IS giving them 2m space!

The attitude from riders on this thread is akin to SUV drivers in cities to smaller cars “I am bigger than you so you have to give me way”.

Edited

That’s not comparable or even remotely accurate. I’d ask you not to run past a Shetland with a child on its back too. Nothing to do with size and everything to do with not needlessly putting everybody at the risk of injury for the sake of 2 seconds of your time.

No it's more. "I'm a huge animal ( not a machine ) Be safe"

But actually, crack on. Don't pause your steps. See what happens.^

Snowflakeslayer · 27/11/2023 10:20

I live in the country actually. Can you not see the danger? Narrow country road, car overtaking a cyclist, cyclist moving over to avoid the foot high pile of sh1t, fatality waiting to happen.
oh, and I live in a small rural village, and love it, but don’t let that spoil you’re fabricated sad image in your head.

Snowy88 · 27/11/2023 10:20

Does it really hold you up that much by walking?? To save the risk of that horse spooking, bolting, throwing its rider? The fact you rode or not is irrelevant, all horses are different

Yet another person revelling in the idea of a pedestrian getting hurt by a horse.

Have a word with yourself.

God alive. That driver isn't taking due care given there's a foot high obstacle in the way.

But I'm getting the impression " you love it ..." EXCEPT FOR EWW, ALL THAT POOOOO....

Must be hard work for you.

But seriously, send this exact scenario to your MP👍🏻

Conkered · 27/11/2023 10:28

It's not clear in the OP if they are going wide and slow. Mine was a more general point in anycase.

Yes of course, I'm doing exactly that 🙄😂

Grow up please.

I can guarantee if you go spouting this nonsense publicly that everybody wishes you’d move away. Every rural village has one and it sounds like you might be your villages?
