TV in the Kitchen

OH wants a TV in the kitchen and says I'm unreasonable for not letting them have one. I don't want it on during meal time. They said they like it for the news and when they're in the kitchen. I won't allow it, AIBU?

You won’t allow it?
Is it just your house your rules then?

Yes. Why does what you say go?

TheresaCrowd · 24/11/2023 23:09

"I won't allow it".

Errm yes, of course YABU.

ColleenDonaghy · 24/11/2023 23:13

YABU, just because you have it doesn't need you need it on for every meal.

We have ours on for weekend breakfasts and if there's a grand prix over dinner. Other meals no TV.

Createausername1970 · 24/11/2023 23:15

Do you eat your main meal in the kitchen?

I wouldn't object to a TV in the kitchen, which is where we often eat casual meals like breakfast and lunch, and we usually eat at separate times, as our work patterns are different, so a bit of telly and catching up with news would be fine.

But I wouldn't want one in the dining room which is where we generally eat an evening meal together.

I have mine on when I’m cooking or alone in the house. Switch it off at mealtimes. There’s no problem.

CesareBorgia · 24/11/2023 23:16

I'd be concerned about its longevity in a kitchen environment.

SusanKennedyshouldLTB · 24/11/2023 23:18

Tricky. We have one tv in the house. However we all have other devices. I wouldnt allow a tv on during meal times. Or phones at the table. But i do use my tablet to watch programmes when im cooking.

Iloveanicegarden · 24/11/2023 23:19

We've had a TV in the kitchen for about 10yrs now and it's on pretty much the whole time. It's not always TV but radio as well. it is something that I dip and dive into whilst doing jobs.

Libertass · 24/11/2023 23:19

YANBU.

R4 only in the kitchen. I thought everyone understood that.

ALittleTeawithmilk · 24/11/2023 23:22

We have one mounted quite high on the wall that pivots so you can see it from whatever angle. I don’t watch it really, only on days when something big happens suddenly and I want to stay tuned in for latest developments. my partner does watch it to keep up with news and sport and that’s why we got it originally.

it’s completely out of the way.( Just be careful not to put it in a traffic area or it’s likely you’ll bump into it when it’s not on.)

Caroparo52 · 24/11/2023 23:29

Love my small TV in kitchen.
Nice to watch a film whilst doing meal prep alone or the news or big events. Radio usefull company too

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 24/11/2023 23:31

I absolutely detest tvs being in every bustard room of the house so I won't allow one anywhere except the living room. If my husband so desperately wants to watch something in the kitchen he can watch on his ipad (hasn't happened) rather than have a TV in there.

Jessforless · 24/11/2023 23:34

I love having a TV in the kitchen, it’s on when I’m cooking, it’s nice background noise when we’re all just hanging out… it’s our most watched TV I think.
