To think dishwasher fans are part of a cult

I look at people who like dishwashers the same way as I might someone who lives isolated from society, wearing a tin foil hat, while hanging on the every word of madman - with a mix of confusion and pity. Why do people like them? You still have to scrape the waste food off, rinse the plate, then put it in the rack. With hand washing this is where it ends. With a dishwasher you then have to put up with the horrible wafts of smell that come out every time you add a utensil until you finally have a full load/have run out of everything when you can turn it on. Then you have to unload the bastard. Don't get me started on the slops of cold or hot water you get from upside down mugs. So what is the appeal?!

You crack on spending 30+ minutes every single day washing up 3+ times a day and cleaning the bowl/sink each time afterwards and having all your washing up out on the side.

I'll use my 30+ minutes to not be stood at a sink cleaning 👍

Fusty wash bowl full of cloudy dirty dish water, mmm, nice!

Totally agree with this - clearly not clean dishes coming out. We don't have a washing up bowl and just run the tap. Admittedly bad for water use but also we live in a country known for rain 🙄

I’m with you OP 😅

Never have wanted a dishwasher.

Friends have them and they do seem to breakdown with some regularity- and what’s the point? I can wash up a lot quicker than the dishwasher 😁

The speed of washing up is not the point. The point is, you don't have to do it.

Take it you aren’t on a water meter!

Davros · 24/11/2023 17:04

Never mind pots, I put in the bread bin, tea caddy, draining rack etc

Allfur · 24/11/2023 17:07

I wonder what device you use op, that not everyone does? Are you part of a car cult perhaps?

ASGIRC · 24/11/2023 17:07

Cnidarian · 24/11/2023 16:09

EVERYTHING goes in the dishwasher, everything

Nah, I dont dare put my good non stick pans or my smeg kitchen knives in!
But otherwise, yes! Everything!

WeeSleekitCowrinTimrousBeastie · 24/11/2023 17:10

Its just another appliance. I have one. I use it. But I am no more enslaved to it, nor worship it than I do the cooker or the washing machine.

Nowherenew · 24/11/2023 17:10

I’ve never wanted a dishwasher.

I’ve never been lazy enough for a dish washer, how long does it take to hand wash a few dishes!

I thought they were a waste of money and something that rich people had because they’re too posh to put on rubber gloves.

But I must admit that recently I keep thinking how nice it would be to not constantly have a sink full of dishes!

The thought of putting the dishes away once you’ve finished eating and then just press a button, is starting to sound quite heavenly.

I’m afraid I may go over to the dark side soon.

Why not save yourself 30+ minutes every day washing up?

Do it. Honestly you'll wonder why the fuck you waited so long and why you spent so much of your life at the sink.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 24/11/2023 17:12

Is it lazy not to handwash all laundry? Or just dishes.

Oblomov23 · 24/11/2023 17:14

Your OP is very aggressive. You now realise you don't have to rinse, pans are ok, no smells.

Just dishes I believe. No idea what the difference is but apparently washing clothes with a machine is just common sense but it's superior laziness for some to use a machine to also wash their dishes. Grin

Isitsixoclockalready · 24/11/2023 17:14

I never realised that having a dishwasher was being part of a cult. Every day is indeed a learning day.

TheGoogleMum · 24/11/2023 17:14

As everyone else says no need to rinse just get the big chunks off like you'd need to for washing up anyway. I love my dishwasher and wouldn't be without one!

IvorTheEngineDriver · 24/11/2023 17:15

With a dishwasher you then have to put up with the horrible wafts of smell that come out every time you add a utensil until you finally have a full load/have run out of everything when you can turn it on.

We have no horrible smell from our dishwasher and with a family of 3 every cooked meal fills our machine for a single wash.

Basically, it's time. Washing-up and drying by hand take a damn site longer than loading a dishwasher and turning it on. I can load ours in the time it takes the kettle to boil for tea/coffee.

Passepartoute · 24/11/2023 17:15

Another benefit is that the dishwasher deals with things like tea stains so well. If you hand wash mugs you really have to put some welly in to get rid of those.

Infusedwithfigandhoney · 24/11/2023 17:16

Lunde · 24/11/2023 15:45

I don't think you've had to pre-rinse plates since the very early models in the 1970s

Precisely
This is like the anti tumbler dryer thread.
All those saying they are expensive, ruined clothes blah blah dont own them.
I've never rinsed plates, they last for years if you clean out the filters, use dishwasher cleaner etc
Urgh washing up in filthy water is gross.

You probably don't.... How many times are you washing up each day? And how long for?

If it's say 10 minutes 3x a day - you're just wasting time you could be doing anything else.

Sure my dishwasher runs for 2h45. But I spend 5 minutes loading throughout the day. And probably less time putting things away than you do.

And I don't have to stand in the kitchen 3+ times a day washing up and putting things away 3+ times a day ...not do I have all the stuff on the side sitting there.

You're fine to carry on being a martyr but you're missing out on time sitting down doing things you want to do rather than things you have to do.

weegiemum · 24/11/2023 17:18

When we bought our first house the previous owners left their dishwasher. Dh said "ah, we'll never use that!).

When it broke down 2 years later he was phoning the local repair guy (rural remote area) at 8 am and a new one was fitted 2 days later!!

Definitely members of the cult here!!

Lifeinlists · 24/11/2023 17:22

@Nowherenew
It's your lucky day! There's probably a genuine Black Friday dishwasher deal out there right now. Snap it up and your life will change for the better. Totally.

No dishwasher? What were you thinking?!Shock It's 2023 not 1823.

TheKnittedCharacter · 24/11/2023 17:24

No scraping and rinsing here.

Plonk everything in the dishwasher. Kitchen is always tidy, crockery etc always hygienically clean. I think hand washing is a bit minging tbh.

YourNameGoesHere · 24/11/2023 17:12

I think I’m going to have to join this cult that OP thinks you’re all in.

Do it! Make the most of Black Friday deals and join the cult. To be honest if the alternative to being in the cult is washing stuff by hand I'd rather take my chances in the cult. Grin

It's 2023 no one should be washing dishes by hand any more than they should be washing their clothes by hand.
