bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

Is her name Farah by any chance?

#IfYouKnowYouKnow

I was pregnant at the time of that thread and promptly added it to my shortlist 😂

ColleenDonaghy · 22/11/2023 19:15

DD2 has a name that has never appeared in the stats here in NI, but there's another one her age we've come across a few times in the local park. May well end up in the same class at school.

'very uncommon and unique'

It cant be both

I agree. Unique means a one off and clearly your child's name is not unique if as you say, "there are very few people in the world with it."

Even if only one other person in the whole world had the same name, it would not be unique.

You are being ridiculous. Nobody owns a name, so nobody can "take" or "steal" it. Hmm

You set your child up for a lifetime of people getting their name wrong, having to ask her to repeat it, how to spell it etc. Because if it’s unique, people will not be familiar with it as a name and will struggle to remember it.

I wish people would go back to giving their children names which are actual names.

If only!

2024writeanovel · 22/11/2023 19:18

Poetic justice.

My child is named after his dead grandad don’t really care if other children have his name hope he doesn’t grow up thinking these things are worth getting upset about. It must be a very sad little world you inhabit to concern yourself with another child’s name.

HappySammy · 22/11/2023 19:20

Well my name is Hannah and I've somehow survived in a world full of Hannah's. At least I never have to repeat or spell my name 🤷🏻‍♀️

tachetastic · 22/11/2023 19:21

When we were naming our youngest DS we heard a story on the news about an American with a very traditional English name but one we had never heard used, and we went with that.

I can only assume lots of people did the same thing, because since then I have still heard of zero boys with the same name in any older school years, but beginning with DS's school year it has become not exactly common, but not uncommon. How gutted am I when I go to a rugby tournament and there are eight sets of parents shouting my DS's "unique" name?

It's life. Deal with it.

Crazycrazylady · 22/11/2023 17:45

Oh dear god. I'm actually embarrassed for you. Every name that you have ever heard has been 'copied' from someone else. I assume this child in not in your child's class and are years apart .
You sound batshit .

This says it all. Honestly, some people must have the most mundane lives if this is all they have to fixate on.

PainPeas · 22/11/2023 19:22

Named my children all lovely unique names OP, and as soon as they started Nursery the name was everywhere. I'm obviously a huge trend setter.

Ooooorrrr names aren't unique and you tend to notice them more once you name your child them?

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/11/2023 19:23

It must be a very sad little world you inhabit to concern yourself with another child’s name.

Yep. Sad and self-obsessed.

In Palestine, in Ukraine, and in countless unreported "minor" wars around the world children are dying horribly and unnecessarily. They are suffering in natural disasters, being kidnapped and trafficked . . .

A "copied" name is the last thing any parent should be getting upset about.

Bellyblueboy · 22/11/2023 19:25

This always happens. Someone sees a name on a TV show or in a book and thinks they are so unique and quirky to pick it.

But we aren’t that unique other people will be watching true same shows, reading the same books etc.

ExTheCheater · 22/11/2023 19:25

Sounds like it is a common name now.

blacksax · 22/11/2023 19:26

uncommon and unique

You can have either one or the other, not both.

It can't be both unique and used by very few people. Unique is...........unique. It doesn't mean uncommon.

Egypt-Sian?

😂I have definitely spent too much time on MN today!

ExTheCheater · 22/11/2023 19:27

My sons a teenager and I have never met or heard of anyone else with his name.

Chichimcgee · 22/11/2023 19:27

I have a brother and 2 cousins all with the same name, I’m gonna ask the eldest if he ever sued.

I have an uncommon name, it’s not unique just unpopular when I was growing up. I hated it. I longed to be Sarah #27 or Emma #19 in my year group lol

Really? I would say that something that is unique is also uncommon.

I agree that something that is uncommon is not necessarily unique.

Nowherenew · 22/11/2023 19:28

YABU you don’t know they copied you.

You heard the name from somewhere and liked it, so you used it.

She heard the name from somewhere (not necessarily you) and liked it, so used it.

You both (and everyone else) did the same thing.

What is the name? Wickes, Tesco, Spar, Tata Steel? If it's one of those I can definitely see why it caught on 😀

It's probably Zara, the mother is the Princess Royal and I claim my £5

Hellenabe · 22/11/2023 19:29

Usually id have said unreasonable but recently someone copied my daughter's name. It's actually foreign and although not identical, its very similar plus we are all the same extended family. I was fuming actually because genuinely it's obvious it's been copied. But i just stayed stum. Everyone who knows us both thinks the other person is stupid for doing this but no one (naturally) wanted to upset the apple cart. So yes, you are reasonable for being irritated!

Mejustme4 · 22/11/2023 19:29

I gave my daughter an unusual name many years ago and we didn’t ever meet anyone else with the same name. Now ,it is so common and weirdly I have just carried on with my life!

Well for goodness sake tell him to keep it a secret, at least from people living in @catphone's area. They're name thieves and they'll take it in an instant.
