Do you warm the car before taking the baby out?!

They can’t wear a coat in the car seat and obviously it can be very cold in the mornings. I take out with jumper on and hope it’s ok until car warms up when we drive… but apparently car should be warmed before? Do people have time for this?!

I never did, just covered Dd up with a blanket when it was really cold. She never seemed to mind.

Almondmum · 22/11/2023 07:02

When mine were little I kept blankets on the radiator, so I'd take them out to the cold car but put a blanket over the top of them and their straps.

SoStResseds · 22/11/2023 07:03

@Almondmum up to what age? I feel terrible I’ve never done this!

Just to add, I wouldn't say where I live is rough but I also don't think it would be a good idea to have my car idling on the drive for 5 minutes or more unsupervised. Plus it's noisy and not great for the environment.

Almondmum · 22/11/2023 07:04

Until they were out of car seats with straps really. Plus they'd have hats and gloves on.

Hercisback · 22/11/2023 07:06

No, as long as they have a blanket over straps they're fine. I put my babies outside to sleep, the cold isn't bad for the as long as they are wrapped up.

Greebosmum · 22/11/2023 07:07

Good grief. How did we ever survive in the days before central heating and driving cars. If you are in the UK, unless it is ludicrously cold I think baby will be fine. How many more ways can they find to frighten Mothers.

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 22/11/2023 07:09

Maybe I’m a terrible parent but my dc are 12 and 10 now and I never once warmed a car up for them. They survived.

Really being a little chilly for 5 minutes will not cause harm. Car seats are pretty warm anyway.

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 22/11/2023 07:10

I think "idling " your car (sitting it with the engine on while stationary) is illegal anyway.

Irritates the neighbours and is awful for the environment.

Just take a blanket if you're worried.

RandomButtons · 22/11/2023 07:16

No way. Idling your car is illegal.

just wrap blankets over baby - put the blankets on top of the straps then tuck in around the side. The car seat itself is a massive insulated pillow so they stay mega cosy and snug.

Fantasia99 · 22/11/2023 07:18

I just took a blanket out. My 5 year old still has a fluffy blanket in the back of the car.

YouveGotAFastCar · 22/11/2023 07:19

No. I’m pretty sure idling is illegal? But no.

God I know.
The competition never ends. Glad mine are all past this stage now.
No I didn't warm the car.

StillWantingADog · 22/11/2023 07:20

No! Use a blanket

myotherkidisacassowary · 22/11/2023 07:20

I never did, just tucked him in with blankets.

DappledThings · 22/11/2023 07:21

No, never did this. Blanket over the top if it's that cold and the car warms up quickly enough.

Rjahdhdvd · 22/11/2023 07:21

No because then either I leave the car ready for people to steal or the baby by themselves; why do you say you’re supposed to? Where did that come from? I put a blanket on my DC, when it’s properly cold I warm the blanket on a radiator first.
it won’t hurt them to be cold for a few minutes.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 22/11/2023 07:22

No, that's bonkers. I used to put them in the seat in the house, with a blanket over and tucked in round feet etc, and carry out to car like that.

I also used to sometimes put their coat or a cardi (no hood!) on backwards over the top of the straps.

Parker231 · 22/11/2023 07:23

No - not even in Canada where the winters are really cold.

Sugarfree23 · 22/11/2023 07:23

Both by babies were born in winter, when they were tiny babies the carseat was kept in the house. So never that cold.
By the following winter it was kept in the car.

Never warmed a car up for a baby ever. I'm always running late so never have time to waste.

MarleyandMarleyWoo · 22/11/2023 07:25

I only ever did this once, when it was super snowy and DS was very poorly, taking him to the doctors. We live on a farm tho so no disturbing anyone else, albeit it’s not environmentally great to leave a car idling.
Just brought a blanket the rest of the time, and had a spare in the truck too.

riotlady · 22/11/2023 07:26

Nope, just stick a blanket on them.

AHeadForHeights · 22/11/2023 07:26

I did not warm up the car beforehand because that would mean leaving it with the key in the ignition and the engine running out in the street when I was in the house. I liked the car and didn't want someone to nick it.

I suppose it depended on how far I was going as to whether I wrapped them with blankets or not because it used to take ages for the car's heating system to warm up and was often there before it had done so.

Hollyhead · 22/11/2023 07:26

Lol no 😂 if it was very cold I’d make sure they had a hat on and a blanket.

smilesup · 22/11/2023 07:27

The pollution from idling is more likely to cause health problems than being cold for a few minutes.
