Do you warm the car before taking the baby out?!

They can’t wear a coat in the car seat and obviously it can be very cold in the mornings. I take out with jumper on and hope it’s ok until car warms up when we drive… but apparently car should be warmed before? Do people have time for this?!

No because it's not safe and unhealthy to keep the car running in the driveway.

I walk past several driveways in the morning with cars running and the pollution is awful.

We had several blankets of different thickness we used to cover DD. She also wore a hat if necessary.

Sidebeforeself · 22/11/2023 21:37

I find a nip of rum in their bottle warms them up nicely

So what happens in traffic ? Mumsnet blows my mind.

stop-start kicks in on modern ICE cars and cuts the engine until your foot comes off the brake

OnAir · 22/11/2023 21:57

My car doesn't have stop start and I can confidently say it doesn't pump fumes into my car. Unless you have a dangerous exhaust leak the chances of this are pretty slim. People would be suffering carbon monoxide poisoning and would be asleep at traffic lights or on the m25. Warming a car up is unlikely to be pumping your car full of fumes unless you have taped a garden hose to your exhaust and put it through your window.

GG1986 · 22/11/2023 22:20

Nope never warmed car for my eldest and won't for youngest, they are in a long sleeved vest, top and a cardigan, then put a blanket over them once strapped in. They will be fine. Car warms up quickly anyway.

fishfingersandchipsagain · 22/11/2023 22:31

We had an amazing snuggly car seat blanket.

I had forgotten about them. They are probably now “known” to be a huge hazard to baby’s safety and well-being. Seems most things are.

MeinKraft · 22/11/2023 22:34

Nah. I just put a hat on them. Car seats are really warm after they've been sat in for a few minutes.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/11/2023 22:34

Yes I used to. I’d also turn the air con on in summer before the baby got put in

loulouljh · 22/11/2023 22:35

No!!! This is not the Artic.....it was not that long ago houses had no heating. babies survived.

Bunda · 22/11/2023 22:38

Never

This thread has made me laugh no end.

What do the people that don't drive do? Never go out?? The logic behind it baffles me beyond belief. What do you do if you aren't going out in the car? It really isn't even cold at the minute

One assumes people who don't drive put coats on children.

Whats more worrying that the Op is the number of people who stuff babies and toddlers into carseats with huge snowsuits or coats that mean the straps don't work properly and the child can come out the seat.

Topseyt123 · 22/11/2023 22:45

I absolutely never warmed the car up before putting my babies in it! I think that would be irresponsible and very environmentally bad.

I just tucked a blanket over them if necessary. They all survived.

justanothermummma · 22/11/2023 22:56

Hi OP!

You can get a cosy toes blanket, the harness of a car seat goes through the gaps so baby has a blanket to keep them warm without falling off when in the car x

PabloandGustheGreySquirrels · 23/11/2023 01:36

When DD was little I turned the engine on from my phone then the heater or A/C before going to the car

CornTheCob · 23/11/2023 01:43

No. They were either in a snow suit or a coat with hoods up.

eachtigertires · 23/11/2023 01:47

I never have. And I live in Canada where it can get to -30 or worse in the winter.

TMess · 23/11/2023 02:00

Yes, I remote start it about ten min before I take them out.

WandaWonder · 23/11/2023 02:35

No because my baby was not the queen (mind you no idea of the queen did that)

PeachCastle · 23/11/2023 11:52

To hell with global warming guys! Just as long as my PFB doesn't have cold toes for 4 minutes.

🙄🙄🙄

Getting stuck in traffic is difficult to avoid if you have to go somewhere. Idling a car is very easy to avoid.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 23/11/2023 12:04

We don't have a baby but we can warm the car up in advance for us and the dog using an app on our phone! It’s very handy!

CornTheCob · 23/11/2023 01:43

No. They were either in a snow suit or a coat with hoods up.

In the car? Surprised you haven't had a po faced lecture about that yet!

TalkingInTheKitchen · 23/11/2023 12:09

Hahaha no! If I left my car idling for 10 minutes I wouldn't have a car to go back to. My baby is fine wearing layers plus a thin jacket and a blanket. Her big coat goes on once we're out of the car at our destination.

It means the straps aren’t tight enough and they aren’t restrained in an accident. There’s lots of videos that illustrate this

New results show dangers of winter coats in car seats

A big mistake parents make during the winter is putting their children in car seats with their jackets on - here's why.
