Morning, I am attending an event in London this week and have the following day to spend doing some sightseeing, train from Euston at 3pm.
Staying at the Premier Inn Wandsworth.

Can someone plan my day?! Not winter wonderland, not loads of walking. Can use any transport.

Would maybe like to do Buckingham Palace area, are there any Xmas markets?

Many thanks!

Would help to know what you enjoy.

It’s worth getting one of those boat and bus tours so you can get on and off at various different places

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/11/2023 11:48

I wouldn’t bother with Christmas markets, they’ll sell the same overpriced “artisan” tat as any other Christmas market in any part of the U.K.

With limited time and not wanting to walk much, would agree with previous poster about a bus or boat tour - you’ll get to see a lot of the sights in one go and can get on and off at different stops / piers if there’s anything which grabs you.

Thanks for the replies, is there a good london transport route from Wandsworth? Rather than the official tour buses?

Not wanting too much walking as will have a bag with me, packing light but just conscious of that.

Does anyone know how long it takes to get to Euston from say Westminster?

Southbank has some market stalls and it's nice to wander round. Tate Modern is there, the Wheel and the Globe theatre.

I would walk down to Borough Market, loads of great food stalls.

TookTheBook · 21/11/2023 11:52

Covent Garden would be pretty. Then walk down to embankment for views of London Eye, Southbank, Houses of Parliament. What sights are you thinking of?

How much walking is too much for you? When I'm in London I tend to walk miles even using the tube.

TookTheBook · 21/11/2023 11:53

Have you changed your username OP? That's really unhelpful mid thread, people won't see your replies.

Use the Transport for London website journey planner or Citymapper app to plan journeys. There's hundreds of buses and tubes, just tap on with your debit card.

sweetpickle23 · 21/11/2023 11:54

From Wandsworth you'll need to get a national rail train, which will take you to Waterloo. From here you can get the Northern line to Euston- I would estimate the entire journey will take you about an hour.

From Waterloo you can get loads of places though- you'll be able to get a tour bus from here, or you can get on several tube lines. If you want a Christmas market, you can walk the southbank Christmas market at Waterloo.

You don't have loads of time if your train is at 3pm so I wouldn't make loads of plans.

MatildaTheCat · 21/11/2023 11:59

There are plenty of places you can store your luggage for the day if you want to be unencumbered. Just have a Google.

Download the Citymapper app for super useful travel planning. It even tells you which part of the train to board etc and has accurate timings.

Have a think about what you are interested in seeing and be realistic about timings as the museums and galleries can take quite a while to appreciate. If you just want to look then a bus tour is a good idea, just get the train or tube into Waterloo from Wandsworth and go from there.

I went to London for work & had a free day also.
First go and see Buckingham palace & Big Ben. Then go for a boat trip (I got a sandwich before I went) - Not the Uber boat but one of the proper trip ones that do a chat about what your seeing. (I think I got on across from the London Eye) Get off at Greenwich & go on the Cable car across the River. The do the return. Get back on the tourboat & complete the tour.
I also went to The Tower of London, but it depends how much time you have.

I can't think of a Christmas market around Buckingham Palace. If you want a market experience I would recommend either the South Bank or Tower Bridge (it's called London Bridge City market but it's by Tower Bridge). Both have the traditional huts with gifts and food, and both nice views across the river of the London landmarks. Both markets will start at 11am.
For both, you can either take a bus from the road outside your hotel to East Putney, then District Line into town, or walk/bus to Wandsworth train station then train to Waterloo or to London Bridge.

Alternatively, Covent Garden is lovely. Similar markety experience but also small shops and nice decorations. Bus from hotel to East Putney then District/Piccadilly line to Covent Garden.

For a more tourist experience, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, the museums and art galleries.

The Christmas lights are all on around town, and plenty of them around! Carnaby Street in particular is always worth seeing.

Euston is very well connected by public transport. You can get to it from most of central London within half an hour.

The transport for London website has a journey planner which is useful. If you have a smart phone the map app should also allow journey planning with public transport options.

That's interesting about the mid-thread name change. I thought HQ had changed it now so that if you start a thread in one name then your username stays the same throughout the whole thread?

crumpet · 21/11/2023 12:58

If you’re in the Buckingham Palace area you could head up through Green Park(;some walking) and then along to see whether Fortnums has got its Christmas decorations etc up. There might be a little market in the courtyard of the church nearby.

trevthecat · 21/11/2023 15:18

Apologies for the name change. I can't start a thread from my mobile, the last time I commented on a post from my laptop it was with a name change, so this came up when i posted. The second comment I made was on my phone so it switched back. I didn't realise it was name changed originally! Or that you could swap and change in the same thread!
