Waking up and making snacks in the middle of the night

Watching I'm a celebrity and someone (I presume) joked about his wife knowing him to get up and make a sandwich at night. Does anybody actually do this? If so what's your midnight snack of choice?

AIBU to think this isn't actually a thing? At least for most

Sleep eating is a parasomnia but not especially common. What you generally notice is the sleeper trying to eat non-food items...like cardboard, toys, etc. Sometimes even dangerous things. There will be no memory of these things in the morning for the sleeper. Sleep eating is usually noticed woth other sleep disorders like sleep apnea and restless legs.

Prettypaisleyslippers · 20/11/2023 17:59

If I’m jet lagged I might get a snack, I’m sure celebs might be same?

DiamondTiddler · 20/11/2023 17:59

I imagine OP means waking up in the middle of the night hungry so going to make a snack?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/11/2023 18:01

I can't sleep if I'm hungry. If I've lain there for an hour unable to drop off I go down and have a banana. I've no idea why anyone would need to 'make' a snack when you can just stand at the fridge and hack off a hunk of cheese or stick a spoon in the Biscoff spread jar...

OnlyFannys · 20/11/2023 18:02

Only when I was heavily pregnant 😂 I had to go to bed with snacks on my nightstand because I would wake up starving in the middle of the night

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 20/11/2023 18:03

My teenage son gets up and snacks in the middle of the night quite frequently, even making toast and sandwiches on occasion if there isn’t much else. Anyone would think hes in danger of wasting away if he has to go more than a few hours without food.

Yes this

My stepdad gets up in the night and had a little sandwich. He makes it before he goes to bed. He's not overweight, he eats well during the day. He just wakes up really hungry in the middle of the night. It's just a little eccentricity that he has. We all love him despite it 😀

Wheeeeee · 20/11/2023 18:03

I've only ever done this when pregnant, to stave off sickness. Current night time snack of choice is a piece of shortbread. My poor teeth/waistline Sad

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 20/11/2023 18:04

When I was in the early stages of doing the 5:2 diet I did once get up and have a shortbread because the hunger was keeping me awake. On the whole though, I can’t be arsed to make a sandwich at lunchtime let alone in the middle of the night.

Scarlettpixie · 20/11/2023 18:06

I usually have a weetabix if I wake in the night, particularly as I suffer from acid reflux and eating something usually helps.

DH is banned from our bedroom due to his nocturnal snacking. He couldn't understand why I was screaming blue murder after waking up to him eating biscuits and slurping milk at 3am....he will eat cereal, toast, biscuits, and often boils the kettle. I have to sleep in the bedroom with a fan on for noise and the door shut so he doesn't wake me.

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 20/11/2023 18:07

My DH does this.
He’s quite overweight and becoming more so.
He is very sedentary and has 3 meals a day, plus ‘snacks’ of bowls of cereal before bed etc.
He can’t go more than a few hours between eating and I believe can’t bear the feeling of even slight hunger.

It drives me mad seeing him becoming more and more unhealthy, but I can’t help him.

Octavia64 · 20/11/2023 18:10

I do this.

In my case it's because the pain wakes me up (I am disabled) and I'm not supposed to take my meds on an empty stomach.

Mouldyfoodhelp · 20/11/2023 18:11

To be fair I imagine people handle sleep better than me! I get up to go to the toilet and I'm back asleep within a minute. When trying to housetrain the dogs there's been days where I'd set my alarm early every minute or two for 10-15 mins and either turned them off without waking or as soon as I turned each of them off.

I really can't imagine waking up and having the capacity to go downstairs to eat and I'm far from skinny so this isn't about fat shaming. I'm just surprised!

I only ever did this when pregnant.

Snack of choice was usually cereal. Munched quietly!

This reads like you typed 'do people eat during the night' into ChatGPT. But either way, I don't think this is what the OP was talking about. She meant people getting up, deliberately, to eat in the night.

I don't snack during the night. It's not something I've ever had the urge to do. Given that I'm a very bad sleeper and also have a massive appetite, you'd think I'd be a prime candidate for nocturnal snacking, but no.

Tocktocknearlybedtime · 20/11/2023 18:14

Wait until you get older, menopause's with joint pain! I used to be like you but no longer unfortunately! ☹️

I can't sleep if I'm hungry, so if I've lain there for an hour or so hungry, then I'll get up and having babybel/ banana/ yoghurt, and then I'll go sleep!

My DH suffer from arthritic pain all over so he wakes frequently due to break-through pain so often gets up for a couple of hours in the night as he can't sleep, and then has something like I do, cos he can't get back to sleep hungry.

purplecorkheart · 20/11/2023 18:31

A friend of mine does but she is on a medication that causes a huge increase in appetite. She tends to have a load of salad make up in the fridge and just adds protein for her night snack.

A friends husband also does this. He is hugely overweight. Has to order multiple meals when out and will eat to the point if feeling ill and then come home and make multiple sandwiches etc. Will even eat food he hates

mondaytosunday · 20/11/2023 18:34

I'm a type 1 diabetic and if I ever have a low blood sugar overnight I have to eat. Usually a banana for the sugar and carbs.

KohlaParasaurus · 20/11/2023 18:39

I occasionally wake up hungry if I've done a big hike or bike ride and haven't eaten enough afterwards, but I like being in bed more than I dislike being hungry and can usually get back to sleep. The exception was when I experimented with 5:2 when it first hit the headlines. After the second (non-consecutive) 500 calorie day I woke up feeling as if I was digesting myself from the inside out and had to get up and have a snack.

I work in the Sleep Medicine field 😊. But that makes me happy to think I type as neatly as AI!

Snozzlemaid · 20/11/2023 18:57

I don't wake up because I'm hungry but have insomnia so if I'm awake and up for a couple of hours during the night I get hungry.
I usually have a bowl of cereal.

Whiskerson · 20/11/2023 19:02

I used to do this - i.e. if I happened to wake up, I'd feel peckish and go down for a snack. Like toast, or leftovers.

I basically snacked at any opportunity, day or night. My blood sugar was completely haywire and always chasing a high!

Since reining myself in (scaring myself that I was on the road to diabetes!), I don't often get hungry at odd times. It was like kicking any bad habit - murder at first, then you can't imagine it anymore!

deewillow · 20/11/2023 19:04

Me sadly, I've suffered from Night Eating Syndrome for 10yrs plus. It's no fun at all 😥 Waking without fail, every. Single. Night. With overwhelming desire to get up and eat. Not because I'm hungry but it's a craving, addiction, habit ? Until I eat I simply can't go back to sleep.
I've spent thousands of £'s on hypnosis, cbt, talking therapies trying to stop. It seems to fall between some 'experts' saying it's a sleep problem and others saying it's an eating disorder.
Even happens on holiday, other locations.... even while camping.
It becomes sort of manageable by trying to make sensible food choices to balance out the nighttime and daytime eating.
I'm fully conscious I'm doing it, not like sleep walking.
I dream of the day that someone will take it seriously and help me stop
