Waking up and making snacks in the middle of the night

Watching I'm a celebrity and someone (I presume) joked about his wife knowing him to get up and make a sandwich at night. Does anybody actually do this? If so what's your midnight snack of choice?

AIBU to think this isn't actually a thing? At least for most

OP posts:

If I can’t sleep and awake for hours I’ll pop down stairs and make myself a cup of tea and a peanut butter sandwich. I’m usually not hungry but take such delight in the flavours and it helps me get through the coming day.

SwedishSchnauzer · 20/11/2023 19:16

Probably about once every three weeks

Cas112 · 20/11/2023 19:16

I used to do it as a teen.. not any more 😂

This reads like you typed 'do people eat during the night' into ChatGPT. But either way, I don't think this is what the OP was talking about. She meant people getting up, deliberately, to eat in the night.

I don't snack during the night. It's not something I've ever had the urge to do. Given that I'm a very bad sleeper and also have a massive appetite, you'd think I'd be a prime candidate for nocturnal snacking, but no.

I thought it was interesting!

Ktime · 20/11/2023 19:20

I do wake up for snacks when on an unhealthy diet.

When I’m on a good diet I get enough protein and no sugar so I don’t need snacks.

BuffaloCauliflower · 20/11/2023 19:20

My husband does, usually things like cereal, or biscuits, but he’s Type 1 diabetic so fair enough. I will lie in bed starving and not get up for food, I’m a shit sleeper and getting up and moving around will much me up even more than hunger will.

ThinWomansBrain · 20/11/2023 19:21

If I get up to go to the bathroom, I might eat a biscuit if there's a pack open.
Or a Babybel

Ponoka7 · 20/11/2023 19:26

I do. I'm post menopausal. I sometimes have a roll, rather than a sandwich and read for a bit. I need a lot less sleep than my DP, but we go to bed at the same time. I've known a few people who do it. A lot wouldn't admit to it.

Grimmz · 20/11/2023 18:12

I only ever did this when pregnant.

Snack of choice was usually cereal. Munched quietly!

Yep, same here. A 2am bowl of Cheerios.

Nagado · 20/11/2023 19:44

I do sometimes wake up feeling really hungry. I’m partial to a mini pork pie and some crisps. Or the crust of a brown loaf with some butter. It’s not often though.

I think I did sleep eat once as a teenager. I had a big, sealed bag of monkey nuts. I had my own room at the time and there was a bolt on the inside of the door, so nobody else could have come in. I woke up to find the bag neatly opened and every single shell broken open with the nuts gone. I’ve got absolutely no recollection of either waking up or polishing them off.

rainyskylight · 20/11/2023 19:51

I’ve done this if I’ve under eaten during the day and wake up hungry and can’t get back to sleep. I get insomnia so I really don’t need something else keeping me awake. If I really have to eat, it will be a small glass of milk and something like an oatcake. Lights dimmed, back to bed.

CheerfulBunny · 20/11/2023 20:03

@Hmmmbetterchangethis My OH is similar. He dozes on the sofa and then when I go to bed, raids the fridge and cupboards. Chocolate or cheese and biscuits is a favourite. I worry because he's already overweight and pre diabetic, snores and has already had one heart scare. Won't listen to me though!

ThatsBalderdash · 20/11/2023 20:05

My midnight snack of choice is digestives and warm milk 😂

HaveALaff · 20/11/2023 20:08

Wait, wait, wait ...

Do people NOT do this??? I don't do it every night but I do it a lot. Definitely today.

It's always something so quick and carby and cheesy. Grilled cheese usually.

HaveALaff · 20/11/2023 20:09

I'm not overweight but I'm scared now ... I always counterbalance it the next day I swear!

BeehiveSlumber · 20/11/2023 20:10

I used to do this, because I worked a mixture of day & night shifts.

On nightshift, I used to eat my food at 2am, so my body got used to eating at that time, when I was on my non working days

Shift work is not good for your diet or health

BagaChipzsChoccyFinger · 20/11/2023 20:17

Oh. OH. Heck. I hope not. I sleepwalk, sleeptalk, sleep eat, and sleep message people and sleep answer my phone.

Not all the time. But particularly if I've had to take any medical sleeping aids.

I also sleep slapped an ex in the face once because I dreamt there was a spider.

Karma got me back last year, my current partner kicked me hard, repeatedly in his sleep, because apparently an evil seductress was attacking him for nefarious reasons.

He does have sleep apnoea.

BagaChipzsChoccyFinger · 20/11/2023 20:20

Oh and in response to OP... it depends on what's there. Last night I didn't sleep at all, I just went down around 3am and heated a tin of curry. It was shit. It filled a hole though.

Marmite sandwiches with a glass of milk.

Slices of cheese and ham with hendos and plain crisps. In a bowl together.

Cakes, crisps, chocolate.

Toast.

Very milky oversugared weetabix.

The first time I actually sleep ate, I was on my first ever diet. I woke up with a plate in my bed, and ham on my cheek. It was a ham sandwich with brown sauce or something.

Allfur · 20/11/2023 20:22

Isn't it good to give your body a break?

Crunchymum · 20/11/2023 20:27

MIL is a night snacker. She wakes up and has a coffee and a snack most nights (usually a few biscuits or cheese and crackers or a slice of homemade bread) anywhere between 2 and 4am.

She did nightshifts for years before she retired but she had a lot of children (all grown up now) so the middle of the night was the only time she had any peace when they were growing up 😆

Thighdentitycrisis · 20/11/2023 20:37

I do this and put it down to eating “back to front”. I don’t eat breakfast, very small lunch and most eating takes place after 6pm. If I haven’t had enough during the evening I often need to get up in the night or take a banana up when I go to bed. If I’m really hungry will make porridge

PlainJaneSuperbrainthe2nd · 20/11/2023 20:43

This is really interesting - I definitely don't do this and didn't realise anyone did really, so quite eye opening. Having said that, I did sometimes have a banana or cereal bar at odd times when breastfeeding, but I was burning lots of calories and not getting enough sleep. Also I would only eat them if I had them to hand - was too lazy to go downstairs and eat even if ravenous.
I can see how dieting or shift work would make you want to eat in the night but I think my appetite switches off overnight and even if I go to bed a bit hungry I don't wake up feeling hungry.

Nov07 · 20/11/2023 20:44

My DH regularly leaves a sandwich on my bedside locker for me to eat during the night. I'm on medication and don't eat big meals at regular times so wake up hungry. I usually know the nights I will wake up so DH will bring a sandwich up for me before he goes to bed.

ymemanresu · 20/11/2023 21:49

Very occasionally when i've got pmt and craving salt and sugar I've done this. Last time i ate a chocolate muffin in the middle of the night .

XpelairHamPortal · 20/11/2023 22:16

Wow it's really interesting to hear that people can be arsed to get out of bed, drag themselves across the house and make a snack! How long are you awake for? Do you get back to sleep easily afterwards? Soooo many questions!

The only time I've ever eaten in the middle of the night was while I was breastfeeding - with DC1 especially the night feeds would last an hour and I would be starving so I kept a packet of Belvitas (or similar) and a drink on the bedside cabinet. One of those would tide me over until breakfast.
