Waking up and making snacks in the middle of the night

Mouldyfoodhelp · 20/11/2023 17:50

Watching I'm a celebrity and someone (I presume) joked about his wife knowing him to get up and make a sandwich at night. Does anybody actually do this? If so what's your midnight snack of choice?

AIBU to think this isn't actually a thing? At least for most

A friend of mine does but she is on a medication that causes a huge increase in appetite. She tends to have a load of salad make up in the fridge and just adds protein for her night snack.

A friends husband also does this. He is hugely overweight. Has to order multiple meals when out and will eat to the point if feeling ill and then come home and make multiple sandwiches etc. Will even eat food he hates

The friends husband sounds like binge eating disorder. I suffer too. Overeaters anonymous can help and cutting out ultra processed foods and sugar.

I used to do this, because I worked a mixture of day & night shifts.

On nightshift, I used to eat my food at 2am, so my body got used to eating at that time, when I was on my non working days

Shift work is not good for your diet or health

I am the same , I came off nights on Saturday so I am awake now and hungry.
I was deliberately whether to get up and eat but I have now decided I want peanut butter on toast .

Next question do I eat it down stairs - house is freezing
Or come back to nice warm bed and get crumbs in bed ?

junbean · 21/11/2023 04:13

Sometimes I'll get a bowl of cereal with oatmilk. Or a bit of cheese and olives.

My DD, 13yo will get up, carry her laptop with her to the kitchen while watching anime, and eat loads of spicy tortilla chips, ice cream, ramen, sour candy, all the junk foods basically. I find ice cream drips and empty bags everywhere in the morning. 🙄 She's a skinny little thing and would be too skinny if she didn't do this- all her regular meals are very healthy, so I don't mind too much. Enjoy life while you can!

Crumbs in the bed, always! It's worth it!

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/11/2023 04:29

This thread is making me hungry. I used to regularly eat during the night. Now I’m trying not to. Some days are more difficult than others.

Papillon23 · 21/11/2023 04:30

I don't normally wake in the night but I've been doing a lot more exercise than usual and didn't have a huge tea so just woken up and having shortbread and s glass of milk. No idea if I'll get back to sleep but I definitely wasn't going to before I ate so it's an academic question really.

ScottBakula · 21/11/2023 04:40

@junbean , that is the option I have gone for .
I am now wondering if them tiny vacs you can get to clean keybords are and good , I could vac myself and bed before going back to sleep 🤔

🤣🤣🤣🤣 what a lovely idea!

KnowledgeableMomma · 20/11/2023 17:58

Sleep eating is a parasomnia but not especially common. What you generally notice is the sleeper trying to eat non-food items...like cardboard, toys, etc. Sometimes even dangerous things. There will be no memory of these things in the morning for the sleeper. Sleep eating is usually noticed woth other sleep disorders like sleep apnea and restless legs.

This has absolutely nothing to do with OP's question.

You might be a 'knowledgableMomma', but your response is a bit random.

Saverage · 21/11/2023 07:02

I used to have to eat around 3am as I'd wake up ravenous. I found out later I was pre-diabetic and blood sugar control was all over the place. I put on weight eating biscuits (which obviously make things worse) as just grabbed anything to curb the hunger and get back to bed.

Got pre-diabetes under control now but keep a jar of almonds by the bed for the rare occasions I do wake up and need to eat.

This reads like you typed 'do people eat during the night' into ChatGPT. But either way, I don't think this is what the OP was talking about. She meant people getting up, deliberately, to eat in the night.

I don't snack during the night. It's not something I've ever had the urge to do. Given that I'm a very bad sleeper and also have a massive appetite, you'd think I'd be a prime candidate for nocturnal snacking, but no.

That’s exactly how it reads. Why would someone be so desperate to answer an idle question on an internet forum they dash off to ChatGPT??

I did have a colleague once who had incredibly disordered sleep (had spent a lot of time being studied at sleep research clinics etc) and who, while a strict vegan in the daytime, would sleepwalk downstairs and cook himself meat that belonged to his housemate.

Genius idea@ScottBakula 😂😂😂😂

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 21/11/2023 08:39

When I was breastfeeding I was ALWAYS hungry and used to make a bowl of porridge after doing the 3am feed😂

Sweetpea1532 · 02/12/2023 10:20

@ScottBakula that little thing is brilliant...Id need about a dozen for all the dust we have

ScottBakula · 02/12/2023 14:20

I haven't bought it yet but if I do I will report back ( providing it hasn't actually sucked me up 😀) and let uou know how good it is

EskSmith · 02/12/2023 14:24

My teenager will do this - coincides with growth spurts I think.

Museum10660 · 02/12/2023 14:33

i sometimes do this half asleep, its either biscuits or making a sandwich

Isheabastard · 02/12/2023 14:34

I did this last night and my go to is a cheese sandwich.

I actually don’t do this very often but it’s usually because I’ve undereaten during the day.

Yesterday I missed breakfast, very small lunch and just had soup for dinner. The hunger stops me falling asleep, or I might doze but keep waking up then I start feeling nauseous, so I have to get up to eat.

Usually fall straight to sleep after.

🤣🤣 that's how it looked to me or someone coming across as a know it all . I have had nights where I've woken up hungry but I stop myself . God knows where it would end I have no self control .

Noicant · 02/12/2023 15:03

I did for a good long while, much like pp night eating syndrome, it becomes like a habit and peaked when I was doing therapy. I can’t remember how it was resolved but it was really compulsive behaviour, I literally couldn’t help myself, it made me extremely unhappy. It was like I literally couldn’t sleep until I had eaten.

SnoozeToMe · 02/12/2023 15:10

I can’t believe so many people do this, I didn’t know it was a thing. If I get up because I can’t sleep I’ll occasionally make a cup of tea but that’s it.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 02/12/2023 15:20

I am a nighttime snacker. Jacob's cream crackers with butter & strawberry jam with tea is my thing.

Itiswhysofew · 02/12/2023 15:33

Someone I know, eats her own home-made brown bread with a cup of tea, when she can't sleep. Sounds lovely to me.

I've only done it once. I had bread and jam. It was 😋
