School cookery, very expensive

I’ve just checked what DD needs for cookery tomorrow. 8 chicken breasts!
AIBU to thinks it’s too expensive and too much food?

Surely there's a mistake there? When my DC has food tech the recipe usually makes enough for 2-3 portions. Last week's bolognese used 250g mince.

NashvilleQueen · 20/11/2023 08:12

It must be an error.

My school allows us to pay a contribution at the start of term and they supply the rest. English large state school.

ZaZathecat · 20/11/2023 08:12

It sounds like a mistake. Image with 30 kids they'd have 240 chicken breasts to cook! Don't do it and check with the school

idealgift · 20/11/2023 08:09

screen shot the message Op

are you sure it says breasts?

What else would it say? 8 chickens?

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 20/11/2023 08:13

x-posted. A mistake by the teacher perhaps?

NashvilleQueen · 20/11/2023 08:13

That's enough to feed two families! Four onions per student?! So many tears.

wokbun · 20/11/2023 08:14

Sorry but I'm laughing at suitable sized leakproof container...it would be MASSIVE

Fulshaw · 20/11/2023 08:14

Your leak proof container will need to be a bucket to bring that much curry home.

wokbun · 20/11/2023 08:14

Thing is, that recipe is so easily halved!

eandz13 · 20/11/2023 08:15

Surely they mean chicken thighs? 8 chicken breasts?!

wokbun · 20/11/2023 08:17

800g of chopped tomatoes is ridiculous! What's going on - why are they making them make enough curry to feed themselves for a week.

northerngoldilocks · 20/11/2023 08:17

we have this with school all the time - the recipe they send home is for a family sized meal. The first week i sent what they said and then realised what a waste of food it is. Now i usually reduce down to a single serving wherever possible and DS eats what he makes at lunchtime as food tech is pre lunch. There has never been a problem with sending a much smaller quantity - far too much food waste otherwise.

wokbun · 20/11/2023 08:12

What else would it say? 8 chickens?

let’s see what it says…. 🤷‍♀️

idealgift · 20/11/2023 08:18

oh sorry just seen

Sycamoretrees · 20/11/2023 08:18

Have you checked that they weren't asked to source and select their own recipes? And this is one found on the internet without enough thought / guidance about quantity and cost?

CecilyP · 20/11/2023 08:18

That’s a recipe to serve at least 8. The items are in proportion.

idealgift · 20/11/2023 08:18

what year op?

all that raw meat in a no. professional kitchen environment 🤒

Bearbookagainandagain · 20/11/2023 08:19

Wondering if they mean the "mini" chicken breast fillets... 8 is about the size of a pack, and they wouldn't have to chop them

idealgift · 20/11/2023 08:19

yellowlane · 20/11/2023 08:10

Is she working as part of a bigger group where others are bring other ingredients? Either way 8 chicken breast js about £10. That's far to expensive.

good point.

could it be that each group divided up the ingredients

have you spoken with your daughter?

CecilyP · 20/11/2023 08:20

Family sized meal for a very large family! And as a pp said could easily be halved.

Sirzy · 20/11/2023 08:22

Schools should be giving children the skills to make wholesome meals on a budget. It shouldn’t be about a long list of ingredients that will hardly be used.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 20/11/2023 08:25

OP, tot up the actual cost of buying all that, cream, spices (new jar of each - not everyone uses spices and will have it in the cupboard), everything, then email the school with your list and costs. It's outrageous. They can't even justify it by saying it will provide a meal at home. A noisy, chaotic kitchen at school doesn't always produce good or even edible results. Which year is your daughter in?

adomizo · 20/11/2023 08:26

That's ridiculous and it's an odd recipe. It would be so bland with all that chicken there aren't enough spices. Someone needs to check. I would just send in 2. Even the food hygiene aspect of trekking the chicken into school on a warm bus....unless it's going to a fridge straight away I wouldn't fancy eating it. Never mind bring it home again 🙄

JustAMinutePleass · 20/11/2023 08:27

They must mean thighs. Curry isn’t made from breast meat

horseymum · 20/11/2023 08:28

Yet weirdly no where near enough spices for that large a meal.
