Worried I've messed up my meter reading

I'm worried that I've just screwed up my meter reading! Octopus said that the amount is much lower than they expected and now I'm worrying!

I put the number on this screen in. Pressing the buttons didn't make the number change at all.

I am a grown adults but it's the first time I'm done a meter reading! (disabled, used to get it done for me but this one is in a spot I can actually manage!)

Thank you!

Is it digital or a metre with dials? If dials, don't include the last 3 numbers that are outlined in red.

RandomMess · 18/11/2023 17:50

Was there space for two different rates
1 & 2??

One is day and one is night and we have to give both

Balloonhearts · 18/11/2023 17:50

So your reading is 04488

dementedpixie · 18/11/2023 17:50

Looks like a smart meter
Do you have previous readings/bills?

dementedpixie · 18/11/2023 17:57

Is it economy 7 with 2 rates?

Press and hold down the ‘B’ button for roughly 5 - 10 seconds - then tap the ‘A’ button. This will toggle between the ‘R01’ reading and the ‘R02’ reading as demonstrated in this handy video:

Don't worry. Octopus has good customer service. Send them a photo of your meter.

TreeWell · 18/11/2023 18:57

Pressing/holding the buttons didn't change anything. The number stayed the same.

I still like I've messed up so will ring them on Monday! Thank you!

Send them the photo of the meter. Or ask them to send someone round to read it, and show you how to, if they think it’s not correct.

Just because they say it’s lower than they expected, doesn’t mean it isn’t correct!

KrisAkabusi · 18/11/2023 19:12

What number did you actually give them? If it was 04488 you've nothing to worry about.

TreeWell · 18/11/2023 19:13

It was 04488! 😊

TreeWell · 18/11/2023 19:13

It was 04488! 😊

Then you're fine, you're just using a lot less electricity than the average.

TreeWell · 18/11/2023 19:17

Thank you! Honestly sometimes my brain just runs away with me!

I need to tackle the gas meter next, if I can access it! 😬

Seems right but if you want to be sure, view your meter reading history and see what the last few were

TreeWell · 18/11/2023 19:19

It's the first time it's been read properly since I moved in - the rest were estimated readings.

Should have done it sooner but I've been really struggling with my health and it was waaaayyy down on the list unfortunately!

OP posts:
BarbaraofSeville · 18/11/2023 19:45

Do you not have a correct starting reading when you moved in? Or did the previous occupants get a correct final bill?

If the last reading was estimated then while your current reading is right, your bill to date could be wrong.

But if you think they're estimated to your advantage you'll probably not want to take this any further......

TreeWell · 18/11/2023 21:30

Yeah but that's from over a year ago! I think they've estimated that I've used far more than I have in reality - I don't really use much electricity, don't have a TV for example and it's only a small studio flat. I only wash once a week, don't use a dryer, and I'm out at work all day so there's not masses used on a daily basis.

OP posts:
RandomMess · 18/11/2023 21:43

I think it's just because your usage is unusually low then.

TreeWell · 18/11/2023 21:52

Thank you! Yep, there's only me and my little dog, and he doesn't use much electricity! 🤣😁

OP posts:
PuttingDownRoots · 18/11/2023 21:57

Theres your answer... you use less than average.
If similar flats have 2 adults, wfh, using a dryer for sports kit and like gaming all night they will have higher usage.

wokbun · 18/11/2023 22:01

I get this sometimes if we've been away a lot. It's just a prompt to check you've put all the digits in correctly and to stop people trying to claim they've used looooads less as it will only catch up with them later. You've read it fine.
