To think State education is really poor?

We sent our eldest to a taster day at a private school. He was agog. His school don't allow playing on the grass when it's wet. The private school change them into waterproofs and wellies for break. PE 3x a week. Sport every day. Dedicated specialist teaching in art, DT, languages, sciences etc. 16 in a class instead of 30. The difference in the quality of life between the two school has really blown my mind. The state school is "outstanding". The private school reckon DS is 2 years behind their curriculum. We've been told in state that he's meeting expectations. How is this remotely acceptable?

Just because some posters are pointing out the flaws in the Labour Party’s proposed policy doesn’t automatically mean they’re Tory supporters.

So what if there are, it's a democratic society...Lennon, Stalin, they don't run this country, I have every right to believe in a different political system to you....if you don't agree then....

Plus interest.

It’s means tested and not a big monthly amount at all. An extra £5000 over 40 years will be hardly noticeable.

The tories have also run state education into the ground.

All parties have done this. Labour aren't promising any real funding or improvement to state schools.
Stop being blinded by the class warfare angle of pitting Private Vs State and look at the detail. If they were serious about improving state education they would be pledging income tax ie ring fenced for higher rate to raise 10+ billion per year. But they aren't doing that.

Give them a chance!

The extra teachers and mental health counsellors they are promising to start with will be a massive improvement to the Tories who have done shit all as regards either MH provision or education.

Will be plenty of time for labour to do more.

Ah well we’ve had to put up with the Tory fanatical worshipping of ill thought out policies the past 14 years- Brexit anyone?

Lmao are you aware that it's only because of Brexit that Labour can add VAT to education?
It is illegal in the EU. Because they value education there.
Funnily enough it could very well prove a barrier to Labour re-aliging with EU and there will be ECHR challenges.

twistyizzy · 16/05/2024 21:02

In the current political climate you aren't allowed to critique any of Labour's policies without being called a Tory. It is deeply worrying the level of fanatical worshipping even when a policy is revealed to be ill thought out and won't achieve what is ntended.

It is only one policy. Who votes on a single policy? I don't agree that it is fanatical worshipping. Most people are just ready for a change as the current lot have fucked everything up so much.

How will it be paid for? The VAT scheme will cost the tax payer money. The only people who think it won’t are those who are comically ill-informed or who conveniently ignore facts.

I would be happy to pay more tax to improve education and healthcare. Tax cuts were never the answer.

The ‘outstanding’ state secondary we sent our DD to completely traumatised her. She does have SEN but the environment was like torture. Rowdy classrooms, teachers yelling all the time, kids fighting. Her anxiety made her so ill, they advised us to keep her at home. And so she really learnt very little. We luckily managed to get her a place at a very specialist school that is much more like a private school and she is slowly recovering and attends school every day. I feel terrible for putting her through that state school experience, they just weren’t equipped to help her in the same way that her new school does.

What extra teachers?

Here's a gem of data... There are 570,265 teachers in the UK, according to tes magazine.

Now Schools Weekly found that: just 58% of teachers plan to be in their job in 3 years time... So, 330,753 will be here. Of course new teachers come in, but 6,500 is a drop in the ocean...The issue is retention not recruitment. The Government are spending £1.27 billion in supply teachers.

6500 teachers would only happen if Labour got the projected 1.6 billion from VAT.
ASI paper refuted that and if >10% of DC come out of private (rolls are already 2.7% down) then the net income will be £0. How will Labour then pay for these 6500 teachers?

Nope economists and researchers also. Look up ASI.

Record numbers of teachers in England quitting profession, figures show

Department for Education survey finds that 40,000 – almost 9% of workforce – left state schools in 2021-22 before retirement

The reason teachers are leaving is because of Tory government. A labour government and change in education policy is waaay more likely to deal with recruitment issues .

Actually they are leaving because of Ofsted, pupil behaviour and workload as well as funding. None of which is party political.
Labour haven't said they will increase funding per pupil, or even level up the discrepancy between funding in the North Vs South.

Oh give me a break. The Tories have caused the issues with work load and Ofsted- it’s all Tory driven .Re behaviour the Tories have done sfa for young people. There is no MH provision for adults of kids, no support with col crisis or housing, the curriculum is crap…. They’ve caused it all.

ASI! No agenda whatsoever 😂

This is their mission statement copied from their website

We believe in:

Low, simple, flat taxes that encourage investment and innovation, and hence economic growth.
A voucher-based education system that gives parents and schools complete freedom over how and where children are educated.
A privately-provided, publicly-funded healthcare system where patient outcomes are the focus.
Freedom of trade with the world, and a liberal immigration system that is designed to work for migrants and natives alike.
A liberalised planning system that lets many more houses be built, so everyone can afford to own their own home.
A simple welfare system based around a Negative Income Tax or Basic Income that tops up the wages of the poor and guarantees that work always pays.
Free market money and an end to bailouts of private banks, in all their forms.

I am not defending the Tories but I am saying don't expect Labour to come riding in and wave a magic wand. They have been very careful not to promise anything at all other than VAT which has had holes ripped ij it. Even the authors of the IFS report now admit they were wildly optimistic and didn't account for SEN.
