Nanny christmas bonus

I love my nanny and want to show her that this Christmas. Been googling Christmas bonus for nannies and a lot of people say they give 1 week net salary as bonus, which for us would be £500. I just can't afford this!!! Nannies is this what you expect? For context I don't get a Christmas bonus in my job, hence not sure.

We give our nanny £1,500 and a present of about £100 - it's a lot but it's because it's a competitive nanny market and she's amazing and makes my life possible. Someone told me that was normal in London - now slightly worrying we're massively overpaying but we did the same for the last two years so can't stop now.

I was a nanny for over 20 yrs, several families gave bonuses but some didn’t. I would say that whatever you do you need to be consistent each year she is with you as giving that much this year then realising you can’t afford it another year and giving less will make her think you aren’t as happy with her work. Nannies very much see their Xmas bonus as a thank you for their hard work. I always preferred cash over something like a spa voucher, even if it was just £25 it was always really appreciated. They are looking after the most important thing in your life and those people who are saying they work in an office etc and don’t get one… it’s a very different situation

Concannon88 · 21/11/2023 14:23

How is she lying? I've nannies for middle class families and been gifted between £100 and £1000 at christmas and birthdays. Friends who I trained with have been gifted similar and more. I dont think anyone is trying to guilt op. Shes asked for advice, if your advice doesnt match others, doesnt mean there is an ulterior motive going on.

Concannon88 · 21/11/2023 14:26

In my 15 year career, it is the norm. In my friends 10-25 year careers it is the norm. In all those years I only had 1 christmas where I didnt recieve a cash bonus, I wasnt fussed as I knew the family circumstances and dont feel entitled to a bonus, it's a lovely surprise most years.

That's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on anyone for Christmas let alone an employee. Buy her a present the same as everyone else within budget. Better still get the children to make her something.

Yes because nothing says ‘thanks for working super hard, going above and beyond every day’ more than a drawing of a sprout in a Christmas hat while the parents give nothing at all.

£500 doesn’t sound unreasonable but if it’s not financially viable then buy her something personal and that she can keep. Does she have something like a Pandora bracelet? Can you buy her some charms, or a nice pair of earrings or give her a couple of days extra off even.

threatmatrix · 21/11/2023 16:36

Just give what you can afford, I give my cleaner an extra days pay. People saying a card or a bottle have obviously never had a nanny. She will know your situation so will probably be grateful for any amount.

@cockadoodledandy

nooooo! Pandora is well old fashioned

Saggypants · 21/11/2023 19:47

@VanityDiesHard why are so you invested in convincing everyone that nanny bonuses aren't a 'thing' despite the many, many replies from both nannies and employers saying otherwise?

You've posted so many times. Are you feeling a bit guilty about your stingy ways?

MichaelaHruskova · 21/11/2023 22:00

Hey!
I work for a family in London .I have a Christmas bonus mentioned in my contract. First year I’ve got £500 and last year £1000. I never expect anything from them. I was very grateful and felt much appreciated. :)
I think that if you can’t afford it, your nanny would be very happy for some extra paid holiday days instead! I would be :)

Because they are only a thing among the wealthy, and they set up unrealistic expectations. I don't employ a nanny, but there is nothing 'stingy' in not paying 500 that one cannot afford.

So is publically judging other people’s tastes but it appears to be alive and well.

But she doesn't need a bonus

that’s like saying someone doesn’t need to be paid more than minimum wage or get additional holidays or gym membership or whatever your employee perk is.

no they don’t need it. But you as an employer probably do.

in competitive market incentivising your employee is good sense.

Bonus is just one part of this though.

We have no idea what sort of salary the OP is paying, other benefits or how competitive the local market is. Or how good the nanny is, for that matter, the OP may not be especially bothered about retaining her.

It's entirely possible a bonus isn't necessary.

Sayitaintso33 · 23/11/2023 11:31

MN is at its most unreliable on this issue: tipping, presents etc.
People are far, far less generous than they claim to be on MN.

The first line of the OP is 'I love my nanny and want to show her at Christmas'.

I think from this we can assume that a) the nanny is at least semi-decent at her job and b) the OP is somewhat bothered about retaining her.

So are you leaving your job as you didn't get a Xmas bonus

Kangakanga · 21/12/2023 20:39

No I’m leaving my job because my work load has doubled for the same salary and I’ve had to ask repeatedly (for several months) to be paid the extra money when I’ve worked more than my contracted hours .My holiday allowance is less than what the government stipulates.
In other words ,they’re cheap.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/12/2023 23:07

You legally need your 28 days holiday

Sorry they have changed

Good luck job hunting
