Why do my expensive-ish curtains look crap

Sickofhousestuff · 16/11/2023 21:24

Hi, I’ve bought my first house so a newbie to house stuff. Unfortunately, my mum is not good with this sort of thing so hoping for some MN advice.

Why do my curtains look crap? Yes they will look better after a steam but I’m not loving the way they look. We have huge windows so had to purchase made to measure which wasn’t cheap.

Im thinking I need more hoops. DH wanted the curtains to hit where they do but I think it’s a shame they don’t hit just above the window sill. Tempted to get my sewing machine out and watch some YouTube videos!

Please help. I’m gutted. They look really different to the image on the website as well :’(

What a great project though, there is a house near me for sale like that, I do occasionally look at the photos with fascination. Particularly the carpeted bathroom and all the old copper hood and ornaments, with brown and cream tiles, in the kitchen. It’s immaculate to be fair, but not been touched since the 60s or 70s. It is not a style statement though.😂

No, more of a museum piece. 😂

I think she did, she asked why her curtains look crap and I think it’s partly because of the colour and the colour of the curtains are almost exactly the same as the walls so that’s my advice. It’s just boring and bleaches out everything else. I suggest people don’t ask the questions if they only want the answers they’d prefer to hear.

And I see you are doubling down on the nastiness and spite.

Notice my total lack of surprise.

I don’t think I was a cunt. I just expressed an opinion. Personally I think you are the nasty person here, calling someone an extremely horrible name suggesting using some colour. You have issues and I will be reporting your post.

As you say, we are all free to have opinions and express them 😁

That’s precisely what we bought…and I’m now totally blaming the flooring on the menopause-genius 🤣🤣

@Janeandme thats precisely what we bought-woodchip wallpaper, carpeted kitchen and bathroom and all 🤮

Edited

Yes! Can definitely be used for items other than clothes!!

I was out for lunch a good ten years ago that involved several glasses of wine.

We went window shopping after lunch and somehow I arrived home with a raincoat and matching hat in a combination of yellow, pink, and peach.....that could be seen from Mars🙄

It was reminiscent of something the gorgeous Doris Day would have worn in the 1960's and somehow possible pulled off and looked sweet in.

However, a tired mother of 4 in her late 40's ....absolutely not.

I clearly thought it looked cute on me🙄as did my two lunch companions.

My husband and children were momentarily rendered speechless and then laughed like drains ...on and on...

I brought it back and bollixed my friends for not reining in my exuberant delusions of youth.
As for the cost of it....for a luminous raincoat!

BorgQueen · 17/11/2023 14:55

Too short, should tuck behind the radiator, you’ll be heating the window recess instead of the room.
Definitely need steaming and putting into proper pencil pleats via the strings.

Apparently. Not. Who is the nasty one now?

Heyhoherewegoagain · 17/11/2023 15:15

Oh @billy1966 thats hilarious 😂 and clearly nothing to do with the wine 😂😂

I think we all get it’s not to your taste, it clearly is to hers. They aren’t even beige. It’s very clear she was asking about fitting/hanging, from her op. not for colour advice.

you can post pics of your fabulous home though and show everyone how great you are at internal decor?

The other thing with this is that the OP says she has a dramatic statement blue sofa (which I really like the colour of). Surely keeping everything else in the room neutral (while picking up the colour theme) makes sense?

zingally · 17/11/2023 17:04

Nothing a good iron won't fix.

Newsenmum · 17/11/2023 17:06

Sickofhousestuff · 16/11/2023 21:30

Do they not look made to measure??

How much did they cost? Full length tend to look more expensive.

Lelophants · 17/11/2023 17:09

I feel like really nice curtains cost hundreds of pounds so try not to worry so much, especially for first hime.

Sugarfree23 · 17/11/2023 17:54

What does it matter how much they cost? They were expensive to the Op and that's all that matters. We all have different budgets and starting from scratch on a new house with lots to buy is never cheap

They need ironed and hung properly.

I was also gunning that, I suspect all together it looks fab.

How much did they cost, lol, tell us youre a daily mail reader without telling us you’re a daily mail reader.😂

who cares how much they cost, it’s not relevant.

hotcandle · 17/11/2023 21:57

Why do they only go half way up the wall?

Curtains should hit the floor. The fabric looks like a pair of men's boxers.

The OP has answered your question about the length and it’s been discussed in detail.

She’s also asked that people not be gratuitously nasty about her taste in curtains.

Have you read any of this thread? Even just reading the OP’s posts would be a good start!

I can add my own comments and read as much of the thread as I want.

Of course you can and the rest of us can reach our own conclusions about you when it’s obvious you don’t have a clue what the OP has said after the first post or what has already been discussed.

  1. Because they are window curtains not floor dusters

  2. Because you need to go get your eyes tested

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 16/11/2023 21:32

Curtains should hit the floor. Short ones look weird to me.

I think you should send them back.

Gosh - who knew there were curtain police!!!

Everyone who has short curtains, send them back immediately. It doesn't matter if you like them or not, apparently they "look weird" to this particular poster, so we shouldn't have them. Those of us who don't particularly like curtains which hit the floor obviously have no taste whatsoever and should be ashamed of ourselves.

Happy now?

Sugarfree23 · 18/11/2023 01:13

Curtains which hit the floor are decoration only in most houses. Most houses have radiators under windows. Long Curtains stop the heat getting out if you shut them.
Some of us want functioning curtain that close without stopping the radiators functioning
