Woman's Hour presenter is being social media abused for her interview with the CEO of an endometriosis charity and her use of the word woman

When is this madness and bullying going to stop?
Emma was right -well done

You are not being unreasonable- I listened to that interview and frankly the world has gone bonkers. On what planet do these people think it is acceptable to have a transgender man at the head of a charity promoting the needs of “WOMEN!”. Just total madness.

I genuinely do not understand this notion that Emma Bartlett is bullying someone for pointing out simple basic facts which are not and can never be in dispute. Even more appalling is the Labour mp Ben Bradshaw agreeing with this transgender nonsense.

just crazy and I despair

Christ, we can't even call biological men men without posts being deleted. It's a joke.

Marthachanged · 16/11/2023 12:54

I learned from a letter in The Times that the head of a charity for Prostate Cancer is a Woman.
Fine, at least she does not have the pressure of maintaining a lifestyle or behaviour that is new to her.

I support Emma. She is a total legend. Not just for this but just for being absolutely amazing at presenting the show, always probing, always excellent with her questions and getting to the bottom of issues, doesn't let guests fob her (and therefore us) off. I will be sending a positive comment to the BBC in a tangible show of support as suggested by PP and urge anyone else who agrees to aswell.

GailBlancheViola · 16/11/2023 13:14

More evidence, if ever it was needed, of just how vicious, bullying and intolerant TRAs and their allies are. They dish out the violent threats, abuse and hate and cry 'bully' because they have nothing else, no coherent argument, evidence or logic and they cannot take any criticism, questions or pushback.

Nothing Emma Barnett said was either wrong or bullying, they on the other hand are behaving true to form.

BringMeTea · 16/11/2023 13:26

When will this dystopian shit stop?

TessoftheDurbeyfields · 16/11/2023 13:33

I've just listened - Emma was bloody amazing!!!

I'm going to email my support to the BBC now - thanks for the link.

The biological male in question is a transwomen not a transman, transmen are actually biological females

When Emma first arrived on WH I had my doubts. Not anymore.
She is brilliant.
Keep on doing what you’re doing Emma.

Yes. Laura Kerby seems to be being held up as some sort of comparator.

https://prostatecanceruk.org/about-us/who-we-are/our-people/laura-kerby

Laura is our Chief Executive and she joined us in February 2022. She’s worked in health and wellbeing for over two decades and has a wealth of knowledge across the healthcare landscape. She’s held various senior leadership positions in private healthcare businesses and was an Executive Board member at Nuffield Health, the largest not for profit in the UK.

For the past eight years, Laura has been a Chief Executive in the voluntary sector. She’s led two national cancer charities, Penny Brohn UK and Myeloma UK and has developed a patient-centric approach to research and cancer support. She’s committed to transforming patient experiences and influencing positive changes in care. Her dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer four years ago and she’s driven to ensure future lives aren’t shortened or limited by prostate cancer.

In 2018 Laura undertook a Master of Science Degree in People and Organisation Development at Roffey Park Institute to study leadership and improve her own practice.

Laura lives in Stroud with her family and her many ‘rescue’ pets – she has two dogs and three cats. She enjoys being outdoors and walking. And coming from an east end family she had no choice but to support West Ham, a team she avidly follows!

I suspect that Richards has nothing like the experience that Laura does. AND it is very important to note that Laura has not erased the word 'men' from communications for prostrate cancer PLUS is not an activist with very public evidence of misandry nor is she an activist for other causes while working for the Prostate Cancer charity. (ie. Richards is a very well known misogynist yet is now in charge of a women's health charity). So, really.... no comparison.

One would say it was a completely false comparator and misses the point spectacularly in fact.

Laura Kerby

We want to stop prostate cancer being a killer. We fund groundbreaking research, drive improvements in treatment, and fight injustice in care.

FKATondelayo · 16/11/2023 13:47

Emma's point was not that he was a man - that was discussed alongside the Prostate Cancer example - it was that he was a trans activist (ceo of another charity - surely a COI) with a clear history of wanting to erase the word woman and saying offensive things about women on social media. Her point to the female founder was that they are trying to make Endometriosis a 'people's' disease rather than one which is specifically female and that is an important factor in why it has been downplayed, ignored and under-diagnosed.

Wwwnothingdotcom · 16/11/2023 13:47

I was surprised about that comparison too. If it went with "As Laura, I have x and Y experience and years of working in helathcare" it would be acceptable. Like this it's just ridiculous comparison.

Yes, and Steph's response was that 28 men (in the world, ever) have been diagnosed with it.

Exactly with no citations! Embarrassing for a 'PhD candidate'

AsexualHealing · 16/11/2023 13:55

If they’re trying to make it a ‘people’s’ disease why did they hire a transwoman? If you believe TWAW then surely they should have hired a “cis” male? I’m surprised Steph isn’t offended they were asked.

Yes - the response could have been "well as Jodie explained, the Trustees remain in charge of all strategic decision-making and I am doing the day-to-day stuff. I have x years' experience in relevant sectors and my goal will be to professionalise this fairly small charity and get it on a great footing to expand and grow so it can help more people"; or it could have been "well I've been an activist for x years and [explanation of interest/passion for endo] so I think I have all the skills and experience needed." But, tellingly, Steph didn't make either of those responses.

Clabony · 16/11/2023 14:06

I listened to this and it was an excellent bit of journalism by Emma. At least SHE knew what she was talking about, (unlike the CEO) and was informed in her questions and throughout the interview.

If I'm supporting a charity I'd like the person who is running it to at least know what they are talking about. The CEO, Steph didn't. What a load of disinformation!

Then there was the going on about being trans. No idea why. Not even an iota of encouragement to seek help for transmen (who are biologically female) who might be suffering from endometriosis, let alone the many thousands of women in the UK who have this condition. Instead, we had Steph wibbling on about 29 men WORLD WIDE who suffer from a similar condition in the penis.
WTF? It's Womans Hour for goodness sake! I'm not listening in to talk about 29 men in the whole wide world. I want to know about what this charity is doing for women. Not a lot it seems. It was all about Steph, who seems to have no experience at all in this area.

Well done to Emma B. for asking the right questions and revealing some iffy attitudes and incorrect facts. Not a charity I'd be supporting, some kind of vanity project for Steph it seemed and nothing else.

There's a much better, more organised one, called Endimetriosis UK. Thank goodness.

For those wondering about the extent of Steph's anti women activism - this is from the embarrassing protest that Steph organised to try to stop women meeting at the international FILIA conference in Portsmouth 2021. The article by Julie Bindel details how she and other women attempted to engage the protesters in dialogue but to no avail:

Helleofabore · 16/11/2023 14:08

There was quite a number of serious disconnected thinking examples in the interview.

For instance, the founder, Jodie acknowledged that female medical health was subject to serious negative sexist discrimination of hundreds of years. And still is. Yes... this is very true.

Declared that she was a feminist (iirc).

And then stated that we needed to detach the femaleness from endometriosis to make sure that it got the investment it needed.

ummmm..... That is most certainly NOT a feminist premise. No feminist would position a medical condition that impacts 28 men and millions of women as anything but a female medical condition. No feminist would use phrases such as '10% of people experience endometriosis' which is what this charity did, under Jodie's leadership. That is very detrimental to women. And trying to erase the female connection is harmful.

I despair here. It seems both Jodie and Richards are simply using this charity to further their own careers and not actually centring the female people who need it.

Clabony, it was 'Steph Richards' a male person who is a well known trans activist (and misogynist) who is now CEO and 'Jodie' who apparently is a woman with endometriosis who founded the charity.

Obviously, I posted this while you were editing..😅

MrsOvertonsWindow · 16/11/2023 14:11

Trouble is, it's rare to hear transactivist ideology being challenged on the BBC or any other TV media. So we (and transactivists) are not used to having incoherence, untruths or ideology met with anything other than fawning approval.
Emma was excellent in asking clear and appropriate questions about what's happening in that charity.
