Taking a break from therapy as I’m going through a hard time

I’m going through fertility treatment which is not a subject my therapist knows much about. I’m seeing her about more underlying long-term issues. We’ve therefore agreed to take a break for now. I’ll have support from the specialist fertility counsellor at my clinic instead.

However my best friend thinks this is a bit odd. Surely it’s when you’re going through a difficult time that you need the support of your therapist the most.

I see both points of view here. What do others think?

I think it's important that you do what's right for you.

I also think sometimes, for some people, the wrong time for counseling is when you are in the middle of a bad time - it can be more effective for helping to process things after the fact.

What do you think? That's more relevant here.

If your therapy is currently focused around your fertility and desire for a family, it would make sense to continue.

If your therapy is about childhood trauma, or improving a long term mental health condition, etc... then digging into all of that at a time of the additional and distracting pressure of fertility treatments might not be helpful, useful or safe for you. Only you and your therapist together can decide what's in your best interests
