Another government U-Turn

In the summer Rishi and his merry band had a Stop the Boat campaign, they then reverse ferretted and ditched that in favour of mass migration and more climate change. Am I being Unreasonable to assume that this week that Rishi has worked out that he needs to do something about climate change in order to Stop the Boats?

Your understanding of recent government policy is not mine. The stop the boats message has been consistent, even though the action to reduce migration has been limited and ineffective.

If my memory serves me correctly around the beginning of September Stop the Boats was abandoned in favour of mass migration caused by more climate change. There were government announcements about not worrying as much about net zero, continued selling of infernal combustion engine cars and so on.

The majority of people on the small boats seem to be Albanian so they're not running away from climate change. Afghans and Iraqis are also coming in big numbers they're fleeting war and persecution so again not climate related.

I'm sure I heard a minister saying they had stopped almost all Albanians coming across in small boats?

Yes they did say a few months ago they had got on top of the problem of Albanians coming over who weren't fleeing war or persecution.

So either they were lying or people are doing the usual "these are actual asylum seekers" bollocks Wink

To be fair though - this government lying or people buying into the right wing bile spewed are both equally likely and possible Grin

Aren't** actual ....

Yanbu.
I'm always baffled by the lack of joined up thinking on the "right". Those with "legitimate concerns about immigration" should be on Just Stop Oil protests and standing shoulder to shoulder with Greta Thunburg.
Current migration levels are virtually zero compared to what's coming down the tracks!

Yabu to try to make sense of this government op.

Can’t help laughing at “infernal combustion engines” - quite Freudian given the subject!

No slip, quite deliberate.

YABU. The climate change pledge and stop the boats pledge are linked. Climate change leads to rising sea levels and more unpredictable weather, so people who cross the channel will be more at risk. More will try it but more will die on the way. The idea with the Rwanda plan is that even if they make it across it doesn't matter, they can be redistributed to another safe country.

noblegiraffe · 16/11/2023 11:04

If Labour planned to implement a ULEZ zone in the Channel and to fine the boats, the Tories would suddenly be all for free boating.
