Why are more people not talking about lysine supplements?

MovingAround90 · 15/11/2023 19:39

Been taking them daily for the last 3 months as I heard on here that they were good for preventing/treating cold sores.

OMG, my hair and nails are longer than they've ever been, and my skin looks fantastic! I've had comments from people wondering if I'm pregnant 😬

Why is lysine not marketed more? Is lysine the major ingredient of Perfectil and overpriced health and beauty supplements? Is there a major downside I'm missing? (Apart from having to book in a haircut earlier than I was expecting to)

I take it daily for cold sores and I've noticed fuck all difference to my hair, nails or skin.

SgtJuneAckland · 15/11/2023 19:49

It can cause digestive issues and if you take them daily your body gets used to an increased amount of lysine so if you forget or stop taking them you will get a major cold sore outbreak. It also inhibits arginine production.
I say this as someone who uses lysine balm and supplements when I have a cold sore outbreak and it works well. There are downsides

Does working for the lysine marketing board pay well?

All2Well · 15/11/2023 20:13

Didn't do much for me tbh

Wellwoman is making me turn into Cousin It with talons though, although hair isn't thicker just longer.

coveredindoghairs · 15/11/2023 20:20

I never seem to get cold sores, but I could do with something to make my hair thicker (not longer), so I'd consider taking it if it actually helped with that. Not interested in suffering more digestive issues, though!

GotNewHair · 15/11/2023 20:21

Amazing for ulcers and cold sores. Actually incredible.

Donna1001 · 15/11/2023 20:37

My husbands been taking it for years to prevent cold sores. Works for that.

He’s still bald though.

crazyBadger · 15/11/2023 20:38

Isn't lysine what the dinosaurs where deficient in in Jurassic park ?

Piffle11 · 15/11/2023 20:40

I’ve been taking it for approximately 20 years to prevent cold sores, but it’s made absolutely no difference to my skin, plus hair still fine and limp and nails still weak and splitting.

Helenahandkart · 15/11/2023 20:41

I took it daily for coldsores and it made no difference to them or anything else.

mum2jakie · 15/11/2023 20:44

I take it for cold sores and it is great for that. My hair and skin still look shit though!

It was Grin

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 15/11/2023 20:54

Why aren't they talking about it?

Maybe they're talking about the weather, the train strikes, Gaza, whether Emily at no 6 is pregnant or just putting on weight, whose turn it is to put the bins out/walk the dog/bath the triplets, what to buy Great Aunty Maud for Christmas, whether to get Chinese or Indian on Friday night, or the latest football results instead. Who knows?

Acyclovir tablets are best for coldsores. Expensive but works so worth it for me.

Helenahandkart · 15/11/2023 21:17

‘Ve been taking Acyclovir every day as a preventative measure for almost 10 years. Still get cold sores a few times a year but not every week anymore.

I take lysine when I have coldsores, as well as taking acyclovir.
I used to use Holland and Barrett lysine lip balm, but can't find it there anymore. Which one do you use please?

That was my first thought too!

LuckyCharmz · 15/11/2023 21:28

For those who Lysine doesn’t work for, might want to try Monolaurin instead. Supplement made from coconut, has an anti viral effect.

SgtJuneAckland · 15/11/2023 21:59

@efeslight the Holland and Barrett one I was in there buying some ages ago and the shop assistant told me it was being discontinued so I bought the five pots they had left, I've only got two half pots left, don't know what I'm going to do when it runs out

So if they ate me after I take them for cold sores, they have baby dinos?

Seems worth it.

Ah, thanks. Just finished my last 2 pots of the stuff!
There was a similar looking product on Amazon but that was unavailable.

Cheeesus · 16/11/2023 09:02

Down a rabbit hole - interestingly I’m not seeing lysine in Perfectil at all. it looks to be a general multivitamin with grape seed oil, pantothenic acid and chromium maybe being extra to that. I wonder why it’s so expensive.
Must go and take my vitamins.

I've had comments from people wondering if I'm pregnant - not sure I want to be getting comments like this.
