Was I being a smart arse?

Was having a conversation about Christmas with my SIL last week and she started telling me about a company that you can buy letters for your DC from Santa, I replied with 'Yeah I've heard about them but I just write my own'. She then called me a smart arse and stropped off! I didn't intend to be a smart arse I was just stating a fact that I do it myself. WIBU and being a smart arse? I hate it when people are cross or upset with me and so would like some other peoples views!

Did you interrupt her, because that would be annoying. Like "Hey, SIL, did you know there's this company that will send letters from Santa to - " "Yeah, I I've heard about them but I just write my own."

Alternatively: "Hey SIL, did you know there's this company that will send letters from Santa, to the DC? How cool is that!" "Oh yes, I have heard of that! It does sound cool, but I just write my own". Nothing wrong with that.

Some people need their purchases validated, especially when they really know they aren’t good ones but don’t want to admit it to themselves. You didn’t do that unfortunately (nor should you have to).

Haven't letters from Santa been around for years anyway?
I don't think it anything new to get excited about 😅

How is it "outdoing" someone to say they do their own? Sounds like lots of people look for offence where there is none.

Some people always have to outdo everyone else.

Some MNers are awful for it.
Have you not seen the competitive under- eating threads?

If someone says my child plays basketball, their child plays basketball at a higher level and also tennis and badminton.

If someone says they get up at 5:30am and does an hour on the treadmill, they say they get up at 4:30 and do 2 hours on the treadmill.

Or it’s the opposite.
Whatever you say they have to put a downer on it.

If I say I bought X, they’ll say they don’t like the colour/fabric of it and prefer Y.

Some people are exhausting.

OP may not be but it would be a bit of an overreaction of SIL else.
