To think many fell for the Captain Tom scam

I never understood all the fuss about Captain Tom. A rich old man walked around his garden and was lauded as a hero. Family then go on freebie holiday to Barbados whilst rest of us were locked down for Christmas. Then it turns out he was part of family scam to pay the family from book proceeds. No wonder so many people in this country are targeted by scammers, we are a gullible lot.

He was involved in NO WAY! Investigators have proven that. His book deals were separate to the charity and he raised a phenomenal amount of money for the NHS. He was within in rights to leave the proceeds of his book deals to his family to thank them for taking him in and taking care of him. It was only after he died that his daughter started mega skimming from the charity and sadly soiling her fathers name and reputation. It’s her, all her and I didn’t like HER vibe even when he was alive. NOTHING untoward happened with charity money whilst he was alive and still a trustee. It’s Ingram-Moore that is the twisted, money grabbing, self centred, self entitled POS here, but like I said, she’s soiled his name through her greed. TBH I don’t even like the vibe I get from her kids and suspect even they knew she started taking money after he died to ‘build a spa for the elderly’ on the grounds of their own home.

Omg neighbours gathering round to clap for you! Sounds so cringe and sinister.

I remember walking from car to house after a shift (agency work driving a recycling truck for local council who were overwhelmed by the increase in household waste). Neighbours were clapping and I didnt join in as was carrying a bag in each hand.

One woman made a snotty comment of "not joining in" and I said "bit bigheaded to clap for myself" which was the first thing that came to mind.

But they weren't really clapping for me anyway I'm fairly sure. I'm guessing their bins emptied themselves. 🙄

Capt. Tom , like the rest of his family, lived in the Three Counties Radio (Herts, Beds and Bucks) radio area. They were ever going on about him and his walking around the garden. This built into a crescendo with people doing all sorts of weird things from bouncing a ball x thousand times to bouncing on a pogo stick for hours. They also had all these people volunteering who got a few minutes of fame. I got puzzled by the later when they told a friend (an OAP) who was becoming increasingly unwell, and ultimately developed sepsis and lost his leg, was promised a Fish and Chip supper for days and then told two hours before they were not going to deliver to that road! I never felt comfortable about Capt. Tom and when I heard he was in Barbados when I could not visit a relative overseas thought WTF! In the same way the London Olympics left no sporting legacy the Covid pandemic did not leave us a better people or nation. In fact selfishness, and sadly scamming, seems to have increased significantly since. I don't think Capt. Tom is to blame more his toxic family!

I think the daughter was the scammer not him.

I totally agree. He was an old school type and genuinely thought he was doing something to help. His daughter and SIL ( everyone directs vitriol at his daughter but it takes 2 ) took him and the general public for a ride. Where was his other Daughter? She seems to have stayed out of it possibly for a good reason

BoringlySensible · 14/11/2023 21:00

Hannah Ingram Moore is one of Captain Tom's daughters.

Lucy Teixeira is his other daughter. She is a homeopath and iirc has anti-vaxx leanings. That's not terribly relevant but to quote for a blog post...

He has lived with my sister, her husband and their children, my niece and nephew for 12 years. My mother died in 2007, after which my father lived on his own for several years until my sister and husband’s relocation enabled him to be involved with a large property that included all of them. This has worked very well with my father involved with many roles within that property including gardening, recycling and being the go-to mender and fixer. He had purpose, and enjoyed living within this environment, meeting the family for meals, and cooking for everyone as well. I saw first-hand how good living in a multi-generational household is for everyone.

18 months ago, whilst emptying the dishwasher he tripped and fell breaking his hip and deflating both lungs. He was very unwell; he endured a hip replacement and a long haul to get back to fitness. 1 year ago, a lump on his head was diagnosed as skin cancer, he received first class care from both sets of NHS staff with a team of people looking after him for many weeks.

During the Autumn of 2019, my father ordered a running machine and began walking on it to keep going through the winter months. During the Easter weekend with warm weather my father began walking up and down the paved drive. Whilst the family watched him, they discussed the possibility of him walking 100 laps to celebrate his 100th birthday and raise £1000 for the NHS charities to say thank you for all the treatment he received.

Within one week the total had gone from £1000 to £10000; by his 100th birthday and smashing his 100 laps, and after appearing on BBC1, GMB, Radio 2 and channels from all over the world he has raised almost £33 million pounds. He has received calls from The Prime Minister and received multiple awards and recognitions. My sister and I have also been interviewed many times by journalists from all over the world.

I have been unable to visit my father on such a grand occasion; I like many have been disappointed not to be with loved ones on special occasions.

Context.

Article from yesterday's Independent

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/reviews/captain-tom-where-did-the-money-go-b2445393.html

"But the facts are presented clearly. Reassuringly, for example, all of the money that Captain Sir Tom raised for the NHS on his walks went to the United NHS Charities, because the boss of it says so, and points to the equipment, mental health facilities and other projects it continues to support. That was the crowdfunded cash, and nothing to do with the Captain Tom Foundation that later ran into such trouble (and which has now ceased to take donations)."

My bolding.

I think Tom Moore raised that money in good faith and none of it went to his family. The money was donated to Just Giving (or some such) and didn't go into anyone's private bank account.

It was when the daughter took over that it all went wrong.

What a nasty commentary on Captain Tom. He served our country and was brave at his age to bother walking. I am 89 and my poor old legs could not do that. I experienced world war2 in Liverpool which was heavily bombed.life was grim. This brave old man raised all that money for the NHS. His daughter and her family certainly engaged in illlegal activity but to doubt Captain Tom’s sincerity is cruel and thoroughly nasty. Go and speak to your mums and your Grans about what you think. But whoever started this thread should be thoroughly ashamed. You have not experienced how awful WW1 and WW2 were. My father served in the 1st Army and we rarely saw him in all the war years. Captain Tom was a decent honest man and you are trashing his memory.you ungrateful lot.

Family of Grifters. Daughter at Wimbledon standing up waving to the crowd on a free ticket. Well can't buy class.

@Lapun

People are allowed to question the motives of a self-absorbed daughter who decided to cash in on her father's attempt at a good deed.

User135644 · 14/11/2023 22:11

The old captain will be up there right now with Paddington Bear having a good laugh at this thread.

Owl55 · 14/11/2023 22:18

The money Captain Tom raised all went to charity as it should . I think the books he wrote about his own life that the royalties went to his family which seems fair enough but the spa that was built was obviously for personal use not charitable use so should not have been allegedly paid for by the charity . Sad that his legacy has been tainted by his family .

Lapun · 14/11/2023 22:20

What has Capt. Tom have to do with his daughter at Wimbledon? He was dead. Judge not yet you will e judged. This woman and her stupidity will be judged. Captain Toms memory is unsullied by her actions.

Mammajay · 14/11/2023 23:01

I read some of his cringe worthy autobiography. He came over a selfish and ambitious. I never understood the idolising of him for walking round his garden but at the time, in the Captain Tom fervour, nobody would dare question what a hero he was. To me, the heroes were the frontline NHS workers.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 14/11/2023 23:02

So interesting to read about people’s lockdown experiences. I didn’t wash my shopping or give all my money away to the nhs via a pensioner walking around his garden. I didn’t panic buy any loo roll or even worry about catching Covid or being arrested for going for a walk with my friends or meeting them in a park for a cheeky pink gin when the weather was nice but I did slightly worry about giving it to someone vulnerable and making them unwell because I’m not a dickhead. I wore a mask even though I hated every second of it. I think washing your hands is a good idea. I didn’t clap for the nhs and I’m pretty sure none of my neighbours noticed or even gave a shit. I continued to work in an SEN school every single day so I was thankful I wasn’t financially affected (in fact I actually ended up slightly better off because I saved money as everywhere was closed). I broadly followed the rules, even though I felt sad and angry a lot of the time and wished I was on holiday. I LOVED the vaccine and thought the science was brilliant.

Captain tom was a tosser though. Sorry!

I absolutely respect any and all veterans for what they did for their country. That is seperate to how I feel about the Moores

I never fell for the ‘aw look a sweet slow old men’ schtick or indeed any of the sentimental guff that was prevelant during COVID. I was too busy being angry about being controlled, police arresting people for sitting in their garden, the ridiculous clap, the busybodies out in force for their Time To Shine and the fact that my children couldn’t go to school when they needed it most.

then the holiday came round and I thought ‘what a joke’.

Im positively gleeful the spa will be pulled down. Horrible people

He sounded like a pretty unpleasant individual based on his account of his time with his wife. By all means consider him saintly if you want, but others are allowed to draw their own conclusions. I have no skin in the game but I really don't believe anyone is above scrutiny, really.

TizerorFizz · 15/11/2023 00:20

We are a gullible nation though. Look how people admired Jimmy Savile. Never understood this! Always utterly revolting. Boris Johnson was lauded too - in some quarters. We look at the sugar coated exterior and don’t look deeply underneath. We love a few catch phrases “Now then, now then, howz about that then” and “Get Brexit Done” and the public falls over itself to be taken in.

Captain Tom: I think the foundation was set up by the DD after his death. I think she saw a way to make money. Staff costs for the foundation were £180k a year! Freebies everywhere. If was a good thing wasn’t it?! NHS got some money and she got some too.

For anyone interested, Lord Jonathan Sumption, formerly Supreme Court Judge, has expressed the best arguments for no more lockdowns. If it’s available, his piece in The Times about the COVID inquiry sums up everything that we did wrong! Next time we need to do things differently.

I don't know, but traits like greed tend to run in families. She said he was the one who wanted the book money to go to the family.

She would say that, wouldn't she?

I never once opened an article about Captain Tom and didn't donate to his charity.

I also didn't clap for the NHS.

I followed the rules that were sensible and ignored those that weren't.

If / when there's another pandemic, I'm hoping people will be less annoying / ridiculous, having lived through covid.
