To want DH to stop coughing?

user6776 · 12/11/2023 20:06

I know he can't help but my god, it's driving me absolutely crazy! He's tried cough sweets, cough medicine (kids version as that's all we have) and the usual paracetamol/ibuprofen for the sore throat.

Is there anything else he could try though to stop it or lessen it maybe? I don't think I can listen to it any longer 🤯

I think you sound quite cruel OP.

Go and give your head a wobble.

Shopper727 · 12/11/2023 20:09

Lemon and honey? Plenty fluids, drs app? You’re not alone in it driving you crazy my boyfriend had a cough last year and it went on and on and was so annoying, I felt bad but he couldn’t help it it was just so persistent. He did go to drs for antibiotics as it got worse he also used an inhaler. It was a tough few weeks for everyone, no one was sleeping etc
hope he’s better soon

gamerchick · 12/11/2023 20:10

Night nurse.

user6776 · 12/11/2023 20:11

@hotcandle I'm not cruel! Just after days of listening to it, it does start to drive you mad. I want to help him, the cough is really bad and persistent.

I've been with my partner almost 25 years and in that time, my propensity for catching viruses which give me prolonged, appalling coughs has meant she's had to put up with me barking relentlessly like a chain-smoking, elderly Staffy on many occasions.

For the past week, SHE has had her first (in my experience) awful cough. It's driving me INSANE. I now know how she must have felt on every, single time it's been me doing it.

Cough sweets containing zinc (Vicks do them) are the best thing I've found. Nothing else currently available helps.

user6776 · 12/11/2023 20:12

I feel like he needs something really strong to help but I don't know if cough medicines are actually all that.

cough medicines don’t really do any more than water ie hydrate the lungs. A placebo effect of “soothing” the throat maybe. Original benylin (ie the kind that makes you sleepy) or night nurse might knock him out so at least he’s not coughing overnight. I had a post viral cough for weeks once and was in tears at times as it was so exhausting.

user6776 · 12/11/2023 20:20

@2023forme Yep, it's been keeping him up at night and me also.. I do feel bad for him because it's just constant. Hoping it will improve. Will get him to try the Night Nurse I think!

I swear by broncho stop cough pastilles, i recommend them to everyone! Worth a try!

Bronzenettle · 12/11/2023 20:28

Codeine works as a cough suppressant

Was going to recommend these. I’m not mad on the taste of them, but they really work.

Inyourwildestdreams · 12/11/2023 20:31

I have the most horrendous cough just now so if he feels anything like I do then YABU. It’s horrendous. I’m not paid for time off work and cannot afford the time off so I’ve had to work through it for the last few days 😔 Multiple times a day I’ve coughed so hard that I’ve physically vomited. I also haven’t been able to sleep at all so I’m completely drained.

@fassnk These are my absolute go-to usually but even they aren’t touching this cough. I’ve been through so many in the last few days that they’ve given me a dodgy tummy 😬😅

Bronzenettle · 12/11/2023 20:28

Codeine works as a cough suppressant

But if it's anything like the virus/cold that both me and then DP have just had (duration, ten days for me, two weeks for him), that's the worst thing to do, as he needs to get all the mucus and virus particles out of his lungs, not festering around in there to spread deeper. Temporarily supressing a cough is only OK for short periods when it's a dry, non productive one, not one with crud in the lungs.

If he has a lot of mucus/fluid draining into his chest as he sleeps, that can be reduced by taking a decongestant as well as the usual warm fluids, hot bath and coughing up as much as possible during waking hours.

bellac11 · 12/11/2023 20:38

My OH has chronic cough (and Ive had the same over decades although seems to have cleared up a little bit in the past few years)

Its really loud but I know he cant help it.

MrsWombat · 12/11/2023 20:44

I had a cough a while back that turned out to be a throat infection. GP would only see me after three weeks of coughing because I had no other symptoms. Day nurse capsules were the only thing that stopped the cough temporarily, but it only went after taking the antibiotics.

Caswallonthefox · 12/11/2023 21:00

When I was a child I used to regularly get a barking cough any time I had a cold. My mother was like you. "Stop coughing, it's annoying", I learned how to suppress my cough and it ALWAYS hurt.
Maybe he should see a doctor. My coughing fits these days are usually due to a chest infection.

Jenala · 12/11/2023 21:01

Honey is apparently as effective as cough medicine. The dark brown, higher quality stuff is best but any might do it. A spoonful. It works for my kids.

Honey and lemon in hot water drink might help too.

TowerRaven7 · 12/11/2023 21:03

Bubbly Kombucha works for me!

SweetBirdsong · 12/11/2023 21:06

Someone constantly coughing IS super irritating I must admit @user6776 But if it's been going for more than a few weeks, it could indicate something much more serious. Tell him to go to the GP.

Look at the Persistent Coughs section here...

https://www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/lungs-and-airways/cough/

Rarely, a persistent cough can be a symptom of a more serious condition, such as lung cancer, heart failure, a pulmonary embolism (blood clot on the lung) or tuberculosis

Cough

A cough is a reflex action to clear your airways of mucus and irritants. Find out how to care for a cough, and when to seek help.

bellac11 · 12/11/2023 21:10

You have to be fairly tenacious to address chronic cough that isnt the result of having a cold

acid reflux or silent reflux
asthma
post nasal drip
allergies

all manner of things leading to decades and decades of chronic cough which is then really slow to be looked into and eliminate possible causes.

In my case, my symptoms cant be 'fixed', just managed

BitofaStramash · 12/11/2023 21:18

If it's been going on for days it's time to see the GP in case it's a chest infection and he needs antibiotics.

I do hope you are more sympathetic to his face.

Pinktops · 12/11/2023 21:37

Taking honey off a spoon like medicine several times a day and drinking homemade lemon and ginger tea help me with a cough

LizzieW1969 · 12/11/2023 21:39

My DD1 (14) and I both had very bad coughs recently, it started as a cold for both of us. DD1’s went on for over 3 weeks! It was virtually non stop at its worst. I took her to the doctor after 2 weeks, and we were told that it wasn’t a chest infection and she didn’t need antibiotics, but we should come back if it still hadn’t cleared up a week later.

The doctor told me that a lot of people were developing a similar cough.

Hope your DH’s cough clears up more quickly than that.
