To want DH to stop coughing?

user6776 · 12/11/2023 20:06

I know he can't help but my god, it's driving me absolutely crazy! He's tried cough sweets, cough medicine (kids version as that's all we have) and the usual paracetamol/ibuprofen for the sore throat.

Is there anything else he could try though to stop it or lessen it maybe? I don't think I can listen to it any longer 🤯

Any cough mixture with codeine will suppress the cough but you can only use for 3 days

Zanatdy · 12/11/2023 21:49

I loved my dad so much. But he had bad lungs and coughed an awful lot, sorry to say but it does get on your nerves after a while. I’m sure far worse for him though

tealandteal · 12/11/2023 21:53

My poor DH had to put up with me having a cough for a year. A really barky cough that was worse at night. Luckily it was resolved pre covid (just)! Vicks Vaporub on the soles of the feet was the only things that helped short term. Long term I went to the GP, had X-ray, ENT consult, camera down the throat etc. Ended up having sort of physio for the throat at the muscle was overreacting and coughing with no “trigger”.

Vinrouge4 · 12/11/2023 22:06

Hot cider vinegar and honey.

PumpkinSpiceSeason · 12/11/2023 22:33

DP had a cough for months- it was so loud he slept in another room. I used to call it the thunder clap when he was near me. It actually hurt my ears.

He's better now but he had a bit of stomach flu or food poisoning the other day and he's a performative vomiter. Like summoning and fighting with a demon, losing and whimpering afterwards.

If I could have help his head in the loo and ended him, I would have done!

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 12/11/2023 22:37

I know where you are coming from. My DH always has a cough for about two months after he has had a cold and it drives me insane I can hear him wherever he is in the house. I know he can’t help it but it drives me insane.

the only thing that even slightly stops it is night nurse, just makes him snore instead!

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 12/11/2023 22:44

Could try some of this ... helps when crap in my throat is making me cough, especially at night. Numbs the throat and gives relief from the irritation, which helps break the cycle.

Soluble co-codomol! It's about the only thing that works when I have a cough. You can buy it over the counter in pharmacies though I wouldn't buy solpadeine as it has caffeine in it. But a generic brand should do the job!

Crikeyalmighty · 13/11/2023 00:02

You know what worked for me- 10 days in California- I swear our weather here really doesn't help

Neverendingstory2 · 13/11/2023 00:41

I had a constant cough for over a month after I caught a virus. I would cough so hard and so long that my throat was sore and I would gag/throw up. It was keeping me up at night and I couldn’t go out in public because I never knew when I’d have a coughing fit.

finally went to the doctor and found out it was silent reflux. Once it started an anti acid and cut down on acidic foods it finally cleared up - over a month later.

im sure I drive my DD crazy but she was very understanding as I couldn’t help it.

TheScenicWay · 13/11/2023 00:47

I had a cough for months that I couldn't kick. I was trying everything til I came across a link between sugar, inflammation and coughs.
I gave up all sugar in desperation and my cough was gone within a few days.
Look it up. It's really worth giving a go. Nothing bad can come from giving up sugar anyway.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/11/2023 00:55

Honey, lemon, cloves, ginger and hot water and whiskey.

Go and give your head a wobble.

😂

My DD1 (14) and I both had very bad coughs recently, it started as a cold for both of us. DD1’s went on for over 3 weeks! It was virtually non stop at its worst. I took her to the doctor after 2 weeks, and we were told that it wasn’t a chest infection and she didn’t need antibiotics, but we should come back if it still hadn’t cleared up a week later.

The doctor told me that a lot of people were developing a similar cough.

Hope your DH’s cough clears up more quickly than that.

This, there’s a super nasty cough going round atm. Think I’m on week 4 and only just starting to stop but hacking up gungey bits now 🤢

Before that it was very dry and tickly, not in the chest, in the throat. Very odd. Never had one like that before and am pretty much a connoisseur of coughs 🤣

If it’s not illness related and generally, then should visit gp. After ruling out the dramatic diagnoses, look at folic acid. I had a low folic cough, and know a couple of others who have to.

TheHawkisHowling · 13/11/2023 01:16

Another suggestion for codeine as an antitussive.

EmbracingTheGrey · 13/11/2023 01:23

Jakemans, cough sweets but really do help

MariaLuna · 13/11/2023 01:35

Hmmm, maybe time to become a hermit? LOL.

Many things annoy us in life.

For me it's car exhausts pollution walking to get food.

QueenBitch666 · 13/11/2023 01:44

Post viral night cough here. Tried most over the counter meds including codeine linctus ( useless )
The only thing that offers me some semblance of relief is a strepsil taken directly before sleeping. They stop the coughing long enough to drop off to sleep

bonkersAlice · 13/11/2023 01:49

He needs to seek medical advice if it persists.

SnowLikeRain · 13/11/2023 01:49

Before that it was very dry and tickly, not in the chest, in the throat. I have this plus now a massive headache from trying to swallow my coughing/not cough out loud as DH is v. pissed off with me. I've just decamped to the sofa as I can't sleep and feel slightly sick from the excess of throat lozenges I've taken this evening.

endofthelinefinally · 13/11/2023 02:36

I am stuck on the sofa because my nose is running like a tap and I cannot stop sneezing. My head is pounding from the sneezing. It is ridiculous. The cough is just getting started. I hope this isn't going to go on for weeks.

SeaToSki · 13/11/2023 02:39

there are prescription cough suppressants

I think you sound quite cruel OP.

Go and give your head a wobble.

Oh come on! You're being quite cruel yourself, it's awful to have a cough, yes. We all know that. But it's also pretty awful be around someone else coughing constantly. Don't forget that some people have sensory issues surrounding certain sounds

You sound lovely Hmm

merrymelodies · 13/11/2023 03:59

When I had pneumonia earlier this year, I coughed constantly and annoyingly. I could feel the fury of my family as the coughing continued for weeks. The best help for me was a humidifier in the bedroom. Try it!
