Today, I went to check DD11 and DS9's pc out. (Both are homeschooled, without smartphones or the like, just like yesterday's poster).

I click the login screen, and again the computer has YET ANOTHER operating system thingie! I asked them and apparently its another linux!

Its elementary os apparently. This is the 3rd one this month!

How on earth did this happen??? Is there anything that will limit the amount of os's installed in 1 week to something like 1 or 2? It is making me have to set up the parental controls!

Can you post in English please?

Can you post in English please?

My 2 kids have downloaded another operating system onto the family computer.

Surely you can only have one operating system per pc?

anbdoejpmb · 10/11/2023 20:40

Why haven't you already got parental controls on?

Saracen · 11/11/2023 02:03

Is it their computer, or the family computer?

Hoardasurass · 11/11/2023 02:14

@thebloodylinuxpc what you need to do is wipe them all asap then set up your parental controls properly so that they can't download anything without your permission and can't update the os at all.
If you don't know how take it to a computer shop and pay them to set it up properly.
Your dc could have downloaded any sort of spy wear or dodgy program, you really need to do some online safety courses

QWERTYoutside · 11/11/2023 02:21

There is an trust and disrespect issue for starters.
Then as a consequence they are home schooled 70’s style with books and pencils.
They must have oodles of down time and freedom to install these alternative operating systems. Not to mention know how from poo chube aka utube. They need consequences and a pc ban for at least 2 weeks. They could feck up the os anyway using unreliable sources.

I'd be chuffed to bits if any of our kids did this. I wish I'd be more competent and time rich to help the one that briefly showed an interest.

Ok point well made. In that case ask them to put it back how they found it?

MissGroves · 12/11/2023 09:22

You can have duel boot, and run two OS. To be honest Linux is better than Windows, more secure.

Yeah, I'm sure it's annoying, but I can't imagine you'd start a thread saying 'My child has just left a sock on the stairs, AIBU to be annoyed?' so I'm wondering what the problem with this one thing that makes it such a massive issue? Is there a backstory about them wrecking computers in the past or something?
