to be a bit annoyed that when people that work with the general public, are sworn etc, most people just stand there and do not speak up!

mrsdannydyer · 11/03/2008 12:08

Alambil · 11/03/2008 12:09

No - I wouldn't.. he may be violent or anything and with an attitude like that I wouldn't want to perpetuate the situation and end up concussed!!!

pedilia · 11/03/2008 12:09

I would also say something but can understand in the current social climate why some people don't, people have been killed for getting invovled!

mrsdannydyer · 11/03/2008 12:09

too right!, i told him to stop being so abusive, the poor girl was only about 18 aswell all red in the face.

YABU to be annoyed, given all the stories in the news recently about people being stabbed for intervening in very minor incidents.

MyMummiesAScummyMummy · 11/03/2008 12:15

Good on you! although I normally do intervene if its just a gobby teenager not sure i would if the person had an obvious mental health problem as they may be too unpredictable iyswim.

yes i totally agree, motherfunk.

i think its turning into a very selfish society. my sister is a nurse and the abuse she faces is outrageous, more often than not there's bystanders
the spineless wimps.

OP posts:
MyMummiesAScummyMummy · 11/03/2008 13:58

Motherfunk, thats my personal opinion, no I would'nt feel comfortable, and yes I have worked In the public sector before having DC's with many people with mental health issues and young offenders.
My DH works in a front line public sector job and we have both suffered this so called abuse. No nobody has ever intervened nor would i expect them too, that was my job. Now I'm a mother and with two dc's in tow, their personal safety is my paramount responsibilty. I feel comfortable with teenagers, talking to them and reasoning with them. Don't always feel I could reason with someone with a mental health problem.

For what its worth I'm neither selfish, nor spineless. Feel sorry for your dc's if you'd feel happy to place them in uneccesary danger!

Gosh flowery bean bag/Lewis. You can't live in fear.
If we live in a civilised society we must stand up for each other
I was attacked by a mental health outpatient on a bus when I was 16 and NO ONE DID ANYTHING
It was a packed bus. How would you feel if it that was your daughter?

mrsdannydyer · 11/03/2008 14:09

good on your friend, tenacious
i totally agree, "Often tho people only get like this because they know there's no comeback"

little hitlers get all bossy and think their the bag man souting abuse at the tescos girl or the a and e nurse.
pathetic.
they shout at these people as they know they can't shout back.

i feel sorry for children that are brought up by parents with a "im alright jack" attitude.

flowerybeanbag · 11/03/2008 14:09

I agree it is a shame to live in fear. I personally don't know whether I would intervene, it would depend on the situation, who else was there, lots of things.

But I do think, given recent events, it is unreasonable of the OP to be annoyed with people who choose not to intervene.

MyMummiesAScummyMummy · 11/03/2008 14:10

Mrsruffallo, sorry for you that must have been horrendous, and without my dc's I would have helped you.

mrsdannydyer · 11/03/2008 14:11

here here mrsruffallo.

that sort of thing is horrible.

my sister has also dealt with an elderly lady who was robbed in broad daylight in a busy town center, guess what onone even said a word let alone tried to stop it.
poor old lady, probably went hom and had a heart attack or something.

OP posts:
mrsruffallo · 11/03/2008 14:11

We have to remember that a loy of this fear comes from the media who whip things up out of all proportion.
It is still thankfully rare to get stabbed/shot

mrsruffallo · 11/03/2008 14:13

When I first met my DP we were walking down the street when an old lady was mugged right in front of us.
DP gave chase- I was so proud of him!!

mrsdannydyer · 11/03/2008 14:15

good on your dp, id be proud too.

Would anybody intervene with Dc's in tow, Mrsruffallo what if i'd been on that bus with dcs and intervened and that person turned on my children? I'm NOT talking about gobby teens drunks, but local 'charectars', you know to be mentally ill. Would anyone intervene in these circumstances?

donbean · 11/03/2008 14:22

Thanks for the concern, its nice to know that there are people out there who care and who would stand up for us, but actually in the hospital where i work we opperate a zero tolerance and have security and i have no problem having an abusive visitor removed from the hospital premises, no problem at all.
It is comforting to know that they are there. This has only been true over the last 4/5 years tho, up until then we had to put up with it and deal with it.
I figure that i am not paid enough to put up with abuse...so i shant.

I think that i would involve myself in a situation out of work, im not sure that i could stand by, but at the same time, i dont think that people are spineless or selfish, just concerned with self preservation and safety. It personal, not viscious imho.

mrsdannydyer · 11/03/2008 14:29

donbean its true things in hospitals have definatley got alot better, now we need to spread that around, don't see why for one minute some girl working in a bakery should have to tolerate someone shouting fuck off bitch in here face anymore, than a nurse in a hospital or whatever.

zero tolerence policy works for me!
just like it applied to everyone.

Mrs DD would you confront a known mentally ill person when you had your Dc's with you?
