I can't get my kitten....

sugarpops · 10/11/2023 13:13

I have recently adopted a second kitten from a rescue. This is the second kitten I have adopted through them. I have also helped to rescue a cat through the same rescue. Everything seems above board and the lady is nice enough. Never assumed anything dodgy.

When I adopted my first kitten, I told her how I would think about getting another one. It just depended on financial things and if I could afford it.

A few weeks later (3 weeks ago now) she messaged me to say she has a little kitten who needed a home and has a very similar personality to my first kitten I adopted. She said they would be a perfect match and would I be interested. She sent me some photos and I agreed.

I then paid the adoption fee and a fee for neutering. She says if I pay for her neutering then she can get it done through her rescue (she is also a veterinary nurse) and it is cheaper.

She told me the kitten would be ready at the end of the week - 2 weeks ago. We were supposed to collect him 2 weeks ago today.

When I text her to arrange a time, she told me she was drunk at a party and would arrange text me the next day. She didn’t.

A couple more days passed by and I messaged her again. She didn’t reply for 2 days and told me her grandad had passed away. I replied with I was sorry to hear that, hope she was ok. She didn’t reply and I left it for a few days.

I text her again and to say I hope she was ok, and was there any update on when we could collect him. She told me she would drop him off this last week at some point. She hasn’t.

I have then text her again and I am being completely ignored.

I understand she may be having a tough time. But aibu to expect that I should still be able to collect the kitten? It would only take 5 minutes (she knows me well enough) and it would also be one less animal for her to look after.

I am getting concerned. Before she told me about her grandad, I was also trying to ask about the kitten I have got who is due her vaccinations and spay (which stupidly I have paid her for) and I’m getting absolutely no where with that either.

All in all she has about £250 of my money for 2 kittens, vaccinations and neutering and I am getting no where with any of it.

I thought I would text her again on Monday and ask one last time. If I get no response, I’ll have to take it further.

Who would I even speak to regarding this?

Or - am I just being completely unreasonable here? I have 3 dc at home who are asking when our new kitten is coming and I’m at a loss of what to tell them! My gut is he isn’t coming at all .

Small claims @sugarpops
How massively frustrating and annoying for you.
Who needs the stress levels of being messed about by a kitten dealer who doesn’t deliver the goods!

LittleGreenDragons · 13/11/2023 11:52

My messaging has been slow today too, I'm blaming it on Storm Debi.

I think your best way forward is to try to be "understanding " so you get your money back. Something like you appreciate this is a hard time for her and you understand if the kitten is no longer available but you would like your money back as soon as possible, here is your account details in case she's mislaid them.

Good luck.

sugarpops · 13/11/2023 11:59

Ok another update -

She has replied. Shes at work and has shown me confirmation of the neutering and vaccinations booked in for next week. She's sent me a screenshot of the booking system on the computer. I now have an appointment.

She has promised she will bring the kitten to my house on Sunday. I think me going to her house is a huge issue.

She's very short with me (as I have been with her I suppose). No apology or anything. I don't think I've done wrong. Even in my text message, I said I understood she's had a bad time etc.....but just give me my bloody kitten....not quite to that wording obviously.

Really don't know how to respond.

What is she playing at!
YOU can take the cat for it’s jabs, spaying &c

It will be a cat when you get it as she has dicked you about so much.

It’s typical of people like this to try to lay the blame at your door
You have been more than patient with her tardy ass.

You can collect the cat from outside her house if she’s got something to hide .

oakleaffy · 13/11/2023 12:07

sugarpops · 11/11/2023 13:37

We both have iPhones Can you do that on an iPhone? I'll do it anyway, thank you.

Yes you absolutely can screenshot messages on iPhones
google how to do it.
screenshot EVERYTHING.
I don’t see why you can’t get the cat today.

LIZS · 13/11/2023 12:10

Thought she said you could collect today? Hmm Which kitten is the appointment for and how do you know she has paid for it and that you won't be expected to. She is buying time to sort put another story and you are being sucked in again.

She says it's because she's under the care of the rescue still. She uses her 'charity' which makes things like her spay cheaper than it would me doing it.

I've given up to be honest. If I don't have him by Sunday then that will 100% be the end. She really doesn't care or offer any sort of apology for the upset it's caused my kids. Especially my autistic ds.

No she never said I could collect today. I asked if I could but got no response.

She probably is, but at least the more she lets me down the more evidence I have i suppose. I don't expect to have 2 cats in my house this time next week

This is exactly my thought.
@sugarpops ask to see a photo of the cat with today’s date in the pic or a short vid of it.
I don’t think the cat is at hers if she won’t do this.
She’s screwing you around.

LittleGreenDragons · 13/11/2023 12:16

Some practices let the staff have operations etc at cost price so it can be a lot cheaper (and I mean a lot!). Is the bookings for both kittens or just for the one you have?

Anyway, perhaps the best response is a "Thank you, see you on x date".

oakleaffy · 13/11/2023 12:19

” Under the care of the charity??”
We had an RSPCA puppy too young for spaying and they allowed us to take her home with a spaying voucher.

She’s pulling a fast one.

Id be reporting her “charity” as well, for being run in an unethical manner with money taken up front.

PickledPurplePickle · 13/11/2023 12:21

I think her work are right, it is nothing to do with them what she does in her spare time

it sounds like she has had a rough couple of weeks - let’s hope things get sorted this week

thousandwhispers · 13/11/2023 17:25

OP, at the very least you should ask for dated photo evidence that she still actually has the kitten.

Why would your going to her house be such an issue? What doesn't she want you to see? Is she running an illegal cattery? What conditions is she keeping the cat/s in?

Something is very off with this. She might need reporting to the RSPCA or Cats Protection League.

If she is a reputable 'charity' she must know that the advice for anyone adopting a kitten is that you should always visit it first in the home environment and, if possible, with the mother. This is to prevent illegal kitten farms.

How old is the kitten now?

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 13/11/2023 18:04

Warning to all kitten owners - keep then indoors between now and Sunday. There is a mad woman going around trying to snatch them to pass off as a rescue kitten!!!!

I really hope this works out for you OP. Whether the kitten arrives or you get your money back. Life is bloody complicated enough without this type of crap.

Runnerinthenight · 14/11/2023 10:34

I don’t know why you don’t just go round to hers and say that you’re there to collect your kitten? I would be demanding she hands him over. There’s no good reason for all this pissing about??

Itsnotchristmasyet · 14/11/2023 14:04

You’ve done absolutely nothing wrong.

Her grandad dying doesn’t affect her handing a kitten over.

At the very least she could reply to you to apologise and explain and give you a date. If she needed more time then she could have texted you and said I’m unavailable until X date.

I’m glad she’s finally responded with a date.

If the kitten doesn’t come on Sunday then I’d write on her Facebook wall and say it’s been X weeks now, you promised for the X time that I could have my kitten and you’ve let me down yet again. I’ve been very patient and tried to work around you but it is obvious that you have no plans to hand the kitten over and therefore I’d like my £X back today.

oakleaffy · 18/11/2023 14:57

@sugarpops Any luck getting your cat from this woman ??
I really hope she hands him over tomorrow-
But my feeling is that she’s buying time and there will be yet another feeble excuse tomorrow ( Sunday) Eg her Grandmother had had a health issue and needs the hospital or some other fob off.

It's not looking good is it 😞

sugarpops · 18/11/2023 21:02

Sorry I didn't respond.

Just to update, no we didn't get the kitten. She told me that one of the other kittens has conjunctivitis and may have passed it on to my kitten so he needed to stay at the rescue until he had finished his eye drops 🙄

She offered me a refund and I text back with a firm message saying it needed to be in my account asap. Still waiting for it. If I don't have my money back by Monday then I am taking it further.

She has insisted that my kitten that I do have is still having her spay and vaccinations this week however I'm not comfortable with it.

I can't understand why you haven't just gone over there? This has been going on for weeks ffs. I would be very concerned for the welfare of this kitten - what are the conditions; is he still alive; what is she hiding? Call the RSPCA - they will come out and go with them. These people need reporting. Take action.

Me going round there is not going to solve anything.

I have been speaking to another rescue (a very good one) privately and they are going to deal with it for me as I'm also in the process of divorcing my ex husband and there is police involvement. I really have a hell of a lot on my plate at the moment so while it might seem I'm not doing anything, I have other things going on in my life that are taking over this.

The ladies who run this rescue know who to report her too. I was actually on the phone to them at 10pm last night going through everything. They are just as concerned as I am but sadly they've seen cases like this before.

That's understandable OP. Sorry to hear that.

She is possibly running an illegal kitten farm - ie. caged animals and infections running rife. The kitten might have died due to these conditions. I really hope not. But one call to the RSPCA and they will go round there.

I once called them because someone was keeping a dog in the back garden 24/7 in all weathers. The RSPCA went round the next day.

Where animals may be suffering, every day matters.

I've sent screenshots of everything to the rescue. Obviously they can't help me get my money back but they can help with finding out what's going on and making sure all animals under her care are ok. I adore animals so I am doing my best to sort it out, it's just difficult at the moment.

The good rescue mentioned RSPCA's and also another organisation who would probably be better that they are going to speak too - I can't remember what they are called now. They are going to keep me updated. They have all the proof from me and they will be much better at handling it than I could.

I am also going to email the head of vets with a very detailed account of what's been going on. It was the receptionist I spoke to before so I will email the boss of the all the branches who I have the email address for.

Don’t do that, print all your screenshots and put everything in a letter and post it to the head. They need to see the gravity of her lies, which probably won’t convey as well in email.
