2 weeks off school every other year

I’ll try to keep it brief but, AIBU to think that keeping a child off school (primary age) for 2 weeks at the start of term, to visit family in Australia, go on a cruise (while child is babysat) then attend a few days of a sporting event before returning home, every other year is crazy and really really not in the best interest of the child ?!!

This isn’t about my ex.

The family/babysat by are the sisters of the person in question.
Timed to cover New Years - first few days of Australian open.

As a one off maybe I’d be ok with it, every other year, and at the start of term seems very very reckless!

Seems that people are more divided on this though.

If it’s the only chance for the child (and parents) to see extended family I think the family time might be worth it. Xmas/New Years is a good time for a family visit and people are off work in Australia at that time so more chance of the child getting quality family time.

All our child’s grandparents and cousins live in New Zealand and it will be tricky to find time to see them once she is at school. It takes 2 days travel each way (so 4 days wasted) and then several days of jet leg so it will be hard to fit into the UK Xmas break but if we go during the UK summer the weather is miserable and everyone is busy with school and work. We haven’t needed to consider it yet but I would seriously think about taking her out of school though we would aim for the less disruptive time possible so maybe end of term instead.
