AIBU I think piano teacher is rude

I pay for my child’s piano lessons a month in advance.

My child has a group lesson (with one other student) to keep the cost down.

My child was off sick today so I messaged the teacher this morning informing them and saying we would carry this lesson over to then next term.

Teacher responded saying sorry she was unable to credit/ reschedule due to it being less than 24 hours notice. However she would spend longer with my child next lesson.

I responded with ‘how am I supposed to give 24 hours notice with sickness?’

I then got a shirty response ‘you don’t, which is why I am kindly offering to spend extra time next week’

I don’t see how it is an issue given it’s a group lesson that still takes place whether my child is there or not!

This is rude is it not?

So funny when people clearly don't RTFT

Reverse situations are really naff op. The parent was rude but just say it as it happened in future…

😂😂😂

Busted.

I have a feeling the OP won't be back to admit to her reverse

This is the first time I’ve ever seen 100% on a IABU vote.

Safe to say, YABU, OP.

Mischance · 08/11/2023 22:04

I think it is you being rude! How is this teacher to make a living if people bob in and out?

Thedm · 08/11/2023 22:04

You were very rude. I actually can’t believe you sent messages like that. Her response was measured, professional and understanding whilst still holding the boundary on her terms and conditions, which are completely normal and the same for most classes and tutors. If you cancel with short notice, you still need to pay and lose the lesson. That’s how it works.

You need to apologise.

Mamabearandcubs · 08/11/2023 22:05

Sorry OP but your in the wrong here. You can’t expect the piano teacher not to get paid because your child’s poorly

Daphnis156 · 08/11/2023 22:06

Why not spend the money from piano lessons on lessons in politeness for yourself?

Applesaarenttheonlyfruit · 08/11/2023 22:07

If an entire week of students cancelled on her and she followed your model, she’d be down an entire weeks pay. How would that work?

Toomanycaketins · 08/11/2023 22:08

Must be a reverse

Viviennemary · 08/11/2023 22:09

It is quite usual for teachers to charge for lessons cancelled at short notice. YABU.

Janieforever · 08/11/2023 22:10

Is this a reverse? Give over op you know you need to pay. Good lord.

largeprintagathachristie · 08/11/2023 22:13

Yes, it was you that was rude.
not sure how you can’t see that.

SpoonyBitchell · 08/11/2023 22:16

YABU.

This is standard.

cansu · 08/11/2023 22:18

You are being ridiculous. She agreed to give an hour of her time for x amount. You pay half and the other student pays half. Why should she do the lesson for half the money?? She would be better off doing only individual lessons in that case. I think it is very common to have to pay when you cancel. Think about other services such as dentists etc - you cancel so you pay.

GoodnightGentlemen · 08/11/2023 22:21

I pay for so many missed things because my child has pda- I don’t know for sure if he will see a tutor/do a lesson until he is there doing it…

it’s annoying but you still have to pay. The teacher doesn’t have lower costs because you cancel.

In fact I still pay the tutor if I cancel last minute and he does in fact have lower costs if it happens, because he saves the money on the petrol getting here/home!

doesnow · 08/11/2023 22:28

I think it depends on the teacher. One private lesson I pay for in advance it's tough luck if I cancel at short notice and I have to pay. If it's a little longer it can be rearranged.

Another teacher won't accept the payment for missed lessons at short notice. I must say that it's appreciated, but she could insist we pay.

These are expensive lessons too upwards of £40 an hour.

Yawn. Don’t you just love when people waste our time? At least name change if you’re going to start bullshit reverse threads

SoupDragon · 08/11/2023 23:11

This is a reverse!

The OP said she is a piano teacher on another thread.

ClippyClopp · 09/11/2023 07:44

I am a piano teacher, but not my child’s piano teacher. I teach a couple of students privately in the evening but it is not my main job. I always reschedule a lesson if a child is off sick, but maybe that’s not standard practice. Thank you for your responses.

Our piano teacher reschedules if our child is sick, without question. We only pay for lessons that we have had.

That’s kind of you, but definitely not standard. You may never have had a student as flakey as my son… if it’s only occasional absence it’s probably not as bad as the utter attendance shit show we present!

Londonrach1 · 09/11/2023 07:53

You can't carry the lesson over. It's paid for, your child is sick ..you loss the lesson. That's just it. You were very rude to suggest you carry it over.

arethereanyleftatall · 09/11/2023 07:54

Reverse. No one is that stupid.

arethereanyleftatall · 09/11/2023 07:54

Oh. Cross post.

YouAndMeAndThem · 09/11/2023 07:56

So if both children were off sick, neither would pay and the teacher loses money for time that she has booked out? She's still got to pay fees for the room hire, her own salary, equipment etc so she is basically losing money? Not how it works I'm afraid.
