AIBU I think piano teacher is rude

ClippyClopp · 08/11/2023 16:17

I pay for my child’s piano lessons a month in advance.

My child has a group lesson (with one other student) to keep the cost down.

My child was off sick today so I messaged the teacher this morning informing them and saying we would carry this lesson over to then next term.

Teacher responded saying sorry she was unable to credit/ reschedule due to it being less than 24 hours notice. However she would spend longer with my child next lesson.

I responded with ‘how am I supposed to give 24 hours notice with sickness?’

I then got a shirty response ‘you don’t, which is why I am kindly offering to spend extra time next week’

I don’t see how it is an issue given it’s a group lesson that still takes place whether my child is there or not!

This is rude is it not?

I don’t think op is being rude - a lot of people are struggling financially

Which op - the actual one or the one she’s pretending to be?

So you don't have to make someone else struggle as well.

And it's not for the parent to tell the teacher she has to fit in extra lessons to make up

Oh please!!

If you can afford piano lessons I doubt they are struggling THAT much!!

GirrlCrush · 08/11/2023 17:13

And has the Op buggered off already??

Awaiting a drip feed on this one....

Drpawpawspaw · 08/11/2023 17:13

It’s not rude, they are running a business. You cancelled late, the reasons for your cancellation are not for her to absorb the cost of.

SurelySmartie · 08/11/2023 17:14

Oh dear OP is the teacher! What’s the point in reversing this? Surely the teacher knows the parent is in the wrong and she is right through her professional knowledge of how to run a music business? What would she get out of doing a reverse??

BitofaStramash · 08/11/2023 17:15

Of course you need to pay and you were pretty rude yourself.

TryingToGetDucksInARow · 08/11/2023 17:18

If you book cinema/theatre/flight tickets and then can't go you don't get a refund because you are sick.

Yup people are struggling-including the teacher. What about her bills and mortgage/rent and travel and expenses/insurance etc? Don't they count? Mummy dearest instructed the teacher as if she owned her then whinged when the teacher kindly offered some extra time the following week. Yes the OP was bloody rude and entitled. And making excuses for her enables this type of cheeky fuckery to spread because someone peddling the be kind message is never kind to the cheeky fucker's targets.

PictureOfFlorianTray · 08/11/2023 17:19

You were rude.
If you were , eg, a cleaner or an architect, would you be happy to be cancelled with little notice?

That your piano teacher has VOLUNTARILY offered extra time , in lieu, is extremely generous.

You sound very entitled.

Pepperonipizzawitheverything · 08/11/2023 17:19

The piano teacher has to earn a living too. How would she get her bills paid if parents of students regularly tried this. Most places state that payment will be taken if less than 24 hours notice is given. I don't think she was rude.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 08/11/2023 17:25

YOU were the rude one, not her.

ViaRia01 · 08/11/2023 17:37

Yabu. To answer your point “I don’t see how it is an issue given it’s a group lesson that still takes place whether my child is there or not!”

If you carry over the lesson it means she has to give you a free lesson after you block of pre paid lessons ends. That May might seem like a big issue but as children do get sick quite often, the teacher would have to be giving away these free lessons quite a lot and that would impact her income.

SkinnyMalinkyLankyLegs · 08/11/2023 17:38

You were rude. Very rude. Hence why she responded in kind. I think you need to apologise to her next time you see her.

Ridiculous. The teacher is running a business and the OP has no right to add to her financial problems, especially in such a breathtakingly rude way.

The "drip feed" is that it's a reverse. The OP is a piano teacher.

Clarinet1 · 08/11/2023 18:27

Having done some private instrumental teaching myself I think that, whatever the precise details, the teacher is totally entitled to have a policy regarding cancellations and charging. As PP. have said, she is a person with a living to make and just 24 hours in the day, the same as anyone else. If a pupil doesn’t turn up she has still got bills to pay and has lost the opportunity to do other things (possibly also ways of earning money) because she has allocated time to the lesson.

jlpth · 08/11/2023 18:35

You have to pay if your child is sick. That's someone's income.

towriteyoumustlive · 08/11/2023 18:42

I'm guessing the OP didn't get the response they wanted so haven't bothered replying. How rude...

@ClippyClopp you were rude to the piano teacher. Music lessons need to be paid for whether you can attend or not. It's really nice she offered to spend more time with your child next week, as she didn't have to do this.

Maddy70 · 08/11/2023 18:44

You pay for a course. They couldn't attend you missed it. It sucks but should the teacher lose their wages because your child is sick?

It's standard. They can't refill that place with so little notice

DottieMoon · 08/11/2023 18:52

YABU and very rude. I hope you apologise.

No clubs or lessons will let you cancel at short notice and reschedule.

Omg you were so rude to her 😂😂😂

Who on earth do you think you are? “We can’t come tomorrow so we’ll make this lesson up” er no that is up to the teacher to offer - if they want to - not you to demand. If you cancel something last minute you lose your money.
