dh has just suggested we take off the movie channels to save some money. i said take off the sport ones as well. he said no, not until the end of the footy season.

we arent struggling, and already do put some money away.

i will take off the movie channels when the footy season ends as well.

heh

I think if you call sky and say you want to cancel they will do anything to keep you (so I hear ) and are often able to offer cheaper packages that you choose ie keep a couple of movie channels and sport channels but lose some of the others - might be wrong but could be worth checking it out.

SparklyGothKat · 10/03/2008 22:09

we don;t have the sport channels, i have a dh that isn't interested in sports.

Habbibu · 10/03/2008 22:10

No, you're not - fair's fair. And besides, does he never watch films? You really should keep the channels that all of you like watching

misdee · 10/03/2008 22:13

he rarely watches films.

i just set up a film to record on sky +, and he has two things set up to record as well, so i have to wait up to sort it out as they overlap by minutes.

i dont get much time to watch it, as he watches things like eastenders, QI etc in the evening, so from about 7.30pm i dont get to watch much unless i record it.

which is why i am on here a lot. lol.

Oh, I see. What a complex set up! We keep thinking about getting a HD recorder, but perhaps it makes things even more complicated...

misdee · 11/03/2008 10:21

well we have reached a decision. once footy season is over then we are losing most channels, to put some money away for summer holidays.

(when does footy season end?)

Does footie season ever end?
I have a DH who would watch any sport just for the sake of it. Bloody F1 starts soon as well, the 6 nations is thankfully almost finished.
However, when we moved we upgraded to Sky+, which we got free (cos I told them I was leaving) on condition we had a premium package for a 12 month minimum. So we agreed on sports, mainly becasue it does get wathced. When the 12 months is up though i may ahve to cancel it

WendyWeber · 11/03/2008 10:25

If you want footy you have to have ALL THREE CHANNELS because they spread the matches out across them, the bastards.

If I didn't have a football fanatic in the house (DS2) I would dearly love to get Freeview - we pay Sky £48 a month and we don't even have movies

OTOH he does get a lot of joy and happiness from it, the saddo.

bozza · 11/03/2008 10:30

Having a football fanatic DS is precisely why I won't get sky wendy. But he is younger than yours and I think MOTD every Sunday morning, plus the cup matches that are shown on the BBC, plus the odd recorded Champions League match is enough for a 7yo. My friend was genuinely shocked to hear that DS will just sit and watch a full 90 min match on the TV.

I have always maintained that we can't afford Sky, but really it is all about priorities. I told DH that I would only be happy for him to get the Sky sports if he gave up his golf club membership. As for movies we have several unwatched DVDs in the cupboard that we requested as presents...

HDR fantastic though.

misdee · 11/03/2008 14:51

peter is real footie fanatic. when he was in hospital i cut down the sky package completely as no-one was wathcing ti to make it worth while. peter does watch a lot of sports, and is p*ssed off that a lot of stuff goes on santana sports (?) and that costs even more. which is a PITA.

The BBC and ITV are about to launch a Freesat which will have stuff in HD for free (though obv not the sport).
We have just signed up to the basic Sky package having said that as my parents have given us a Sky+ box and we (hopefully) will get £150 from Quidco for signing up.....so including the installation it will be £6 a month .
We had freesat via Sky before this for a one off £25 payment. That was enough really but we want to use the Sky+ recording bit....
After a year hopefully the HD recorders will be cheaper and we can just get one of those.
Misdee I think you are def right. You lose the movies, he loses the Sport!

bozza · 11/03/2008 22:30

Our HD recorder was only about £80. And does a reasonable job for us.

VanillaPumpkin · 12/03/2008 10:33

Really Bozza? That is good. They were all over £150 when we looked, unless DH was doing a rubblish research job in an effort to get Sky ....

bozza · 13/03/2008 08:38

he might have been. Ours was on offer. And it might not be quite as all-singing-and-all-dancing as some. We are never anywhere near filling up the disk and you can watch something while recording something else, start watching a programme while it is still recording etc. But it doesn't do some of the fancy things like pause live TV, not record adverts etc but you can zip through them at 32x normal speed.

VanillaPumpkin · 13/03/2008 14:21

, sounds perfect .
Oh well. Our Sky is up and running now so that is it for 12 mths. I have already recorded two things that were on last night and we had to watch the small TV upstairs as there was a third thing on at 9 that I was interested in too. I am not sure that is really the idea but hopefully I will have Grand designs to watch while I do the ironing later....
