A week? Of course you can if you DIY

Flights on one of the cheaper routes (Spain or Italy usually the best) then book accommodation through airbnb/vrbo etc.

We're hoping to do a fortnight for around that next August!

Jeannie88 · 06/11/2023 22:32

Paid £1250 for 5 days in Spain Easter gone, lovely SC apartment. Jet2, they were great! X

Primproperpenny · 06/11/2023 22:33

Cheap flights to the Canaries and book your hotel direct. Easily done!

beachmum1 · 06/11/2023 22:34

Pool can be cold in turkey in October. Cyprus is another October option

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 06/11/2023 22:35

You can, we did 2 adults, 1 child, 1 baby All Inclusive in Tenerife in August for a week for 2250 total. We used Jet2 to get 1 free child place which is what made the difference. The hotel was 4* and lovely!

Whitegrenache · 06/11/2023 22:35

We recently had flights Tenerife Newcastle October half term (Monday to Monday so kids missed 1 day school) plus private 2 bedroom villa via Airbnb with private pool
For less than £2k DC aged 14 and 17

Always use sky scanner for
Flights and Airbnb for accommodation

Two adults, two children. Just over 2 grand 5* AI. Wasn't what I'm used to, as went for the children's benefit, so was aimed towards them.

But we had a great time!

Whitegrenache · 06/11/2023 22:38

Weather was amazing 25-27degrees

Coolblur · 06/11/2023 22:40

With kids that age go in term time.

We went to Lanzarote 4* AI in Feb half term this year for just under £2k for 3 of us. If you got free child places it would be possible

Whichwhatnow · 06/11/2023 22:41

My husband and I went to Malta last year in October for well under 1k for two weeks. It wasn't 'naice' if by that you mean all inclusive or luxury but it was lovely, little boutique hotels in Valletta and Gozo by the beach. We only went over for DH's friend's wedding and it was a complete surprise how lovely it was

Alwayswonderedwhy · 06/11/2023 22:46

No chance in August. The lowest we've managed in October is around £3,500 for a week. Two adults and three kids, flights and accommodation (villa with pool or European city apartment)
There are probably plenty of places you can go for less but not if you want somewhere nice.

For August you can fiddle around with random mid week days for cheap flights as you are not missing school. Start with that. Then look at accommodation directly.

We have achieved this by flying into Lisbon and staying on the coast (also few glorious days in Lisbon). Also flown into Jerez and stayed in Conil (stunning beach) - also Asturias - magnificent coastline and food.

We were in Lanzarote this Oct half term - kids have 2 weeks off so able to fly random week days - staying in the north of the island in a gorgeous unspoilt fishing village, amazing seafood restaurants, frontline villa.

Another tip is the French Alps in summer - especially last week of Aug when the French are going back to school. All the winter ski accommodation is a bargain - the weather is glorious and many villages have wonderful mountain lakes to swim in. Also loads of sports and activities for DC to do if they like white water rafting, kayaking, canyoning etc.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 06/11/2023 22:54

I'm guessing you could if you either booked much earlier or left it to the last minute.

MooFroo · 06/11/2023 22:56

Bluffyslummers · 06/11/2023 21:59

I’ve got 2 but they’re small kids, 4 and 2.

ive found flights and flying separately lately seems very expensive

At that age take them out of term time and save a fortune!

It’s more balancing with my AL if we go in term time and then have to watch them when nursery is closed and no wrap/ club is on / half term then it’s another week aL and we’ve already got 10 days allocated for something else so only have 15 left to work with

I hated staying in hotels when mine were that young. All the up and down to the buffet for their food. Someone having to sit in the hotel room or on the balcony when one napped. SC was much easier. If you do go somewhere with a pool in Oct - make sure it’s heated otherwise it’s a waste of time.

MrsAvocet · 06/11/2023 23:09

You can certainly save some money if you are able to fly from airports in regions where it isn't school holidays eg use Scottish airports at the end of August (assuming you're in England). And this year the schools in the North East had a different October half term week to those in the North West, so there may have been better deals flying from Newcastle in the Manchester half term or vice versa. It is worth shopping around. A few years ago we saved about £500 on exactly the same holiday flying from Glasgow compared to Manchester even after taking into account the travel costs and and a hotel the night before the flight. Obviously if you're further away from alternative airports it might not be practical or save you any money, but it's worth looking into.

Mine absolutely adore hotels, we’ve done both and found AI so so much easier. They’re absolute angels in hotels (shitbags at home because of course) but they love it, we just have the youngest fall asleep in the pushchair in some shade, eldest doesn’t nap or if she does it’s when we all need a seista ourselves.

i don’t enjoy self catering and cooking away from home. Breakfast is one thing but evening meal, awful. Bad enough at home

I’m playing with flights to DIY and it’s £400 return to Tenerife pp… that’s insane. I’ve paid that to go to America !

I have booked 10 days August next year for Italy for 2 adults and 1 dc for 2200euro (1900£). It's apartment in very popular campsite. Not naice but just plain nice. Plenty of time to save up now for eating out every night :)

ChicoryDip · 06/11/2023 23:54

EasyJet holidays have plenty of options for around £2000 at the end of August but you'd almost certainly be looking at self-catering.

TuesdayQ · 06/11/2023 23:58

We have always driven through France (mainly Loire or Jura) & had many happy, sunny, holiday for the 5 of us for just over £1k in the last week of August. No sea, but gorgeous lakes with beaches surrounded by mountains. It very much depends on your expectations, I guess.
