Fed up of fucking smelling

Not a troll or first time poster, just NC as this is obviously an embarrassing topic. I’m almost crying writing this because I’m at my wits end with it all

i smell. I shower at least once a day but usually twice as I really need to. I’ve tried washing with every type of soap imaginable (liquid and bar form), I’ve even tried using no products in case that was better but it absolutely wasn’t, I’ve tried shower gels, jelly’s, creams, washes, washing up liquid, even tried cif once as a particularly desperate 18 year old, all types or deodorants and antiperspirant, roll on, cream, spray, perfume, body spray, no products etc. I still fucking stink. I’m fine coming out of the shower, and for around 2-3 hours after I’m ok. But then the smell starts. It’s unmistakably BO. If I shower at 7.30 am before work, I’ll have BO by lunchtime- enough that I can smell it when I smell myself but not enough for others to notice. By the time I get home at 6 I’ll have a much worse musty BO smell. And by the time I go to bed I really do smell.

I’ve tried avoiding different food groups in case it was a reaction. I’ve tried replacing all my clothes and pjs and bedding in case it was stuck to them. I’ve tried different materials.

I also get a horrible musty smell down there, despite having no BV or thrush. It just always smells bad, again I’ve tried washing with products and using just water only- no difference.

I could burst into tears. I mentioned it to my GP who looked at me blankly and didn’t see the problem. But this is ruining my life because I’m either smelling bad or I’m stressing that I smell bad.

for example, i can’t stay over at other people’s houses because I would smell so badly on waking up and the room would stink because of it. We went on a family weekend away and in the morning my room was noticeably more musty than everyone else’s despite the fact i showered before going to bed, it’s not the first time that’s happened

is this just an unfortunate part of the way I am? And I need to accept it and just keep showering as much as I can? Or am I missing something? It’s been going on for so long I could burst into tears but I don’t know what else to do and there’s no one that can really help. I’m just so utterly miserable with this

I had something similar
I used to drown in sweat-which in turn, smelt
I use driclur (I think I bought it on amazon)
Have your shower/wash before bed,dry well under your pits and roll it on (any damp and it will sting)
Shower off in the morning with a good soap use your normal roll on and carry on getting ready
If that fails-doctor
It could be an underlying problem which needs sorting

Best of luck

My friend had this. It was pretty unpleasant and I'm sure worse for her.
Keep pushing your gp.

Go back to GP and insist you have tried all the usual things and what you are experiencing is persistent and isn’t within normal limits and is having a huge impact on your life.
ask for routine blood tests and then a referral to endocrinology.

Im sorry OP it sounds really demoralising and you deserve some help.

This. INSIST on being referred to an expert. GPs deal with "everyday" illnesses for the majority of the time. Tell the GP how badly this is all affecting you.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. Definitely going to push for some more help with the GP. I think the problem is I was looking at it from a cosmetic pov rather than medical IYSWIM. Thanks again for all the advice and suggestions to try x

Definitely go back to the GP!

Sweat itself doesn't smell but when sweat from apocrine glands (in armpits and groin area) comes into contact with bacteria on your skin it does smell.

Only certain types of bacteria will smell.

Definitely cut out onions, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, and red meat. Alcohol can also cause issues.

Your GP should be doing blood tests and urine tests, and perhaps a swab of the bacteria under your armpits.

And when you go back to the GP, book an afternoon appointment and do NOT shower other than you usual morning shower. Let her smell it!

Sometimes a course of antibiotics for the bacteria can fix it!

Arthur2shedsJackson · 06/11/2023 16:35

OP I once worked with a woman of about your age and the smell, all day long, of BO from her was overpowering. Even walking past her, colleagues would be gagging. In the event the boss had a word with her. She was very distressed, said she showered twice a day and could offer no explanation. She was a delightful person and everyone e was devastated for her but it was a very real problem which affected everyone in the place. I wish I could tell you a happy ending but I left shortly afterwards and never knew what happened. But it was a genuine issue, as it is with you. Please find yourself an empathetic doctor and don’t give up. Be strong - there will be an answer somewhere, I’m sure.

Watchkeys · 06/11/2023 16:37

I get BO much more quickly if I get very nervous about something (like, after an exam or interview or something); are you struggling with anxiety or nervousness? It could be linked to that. I think fear smells!

Greygirl2019 · 06/11/2023 16:39

Dettol soap, use an exfoliating glove or mitt to really lather it in and remove dead cells and build up. Driclor deodorant a couple of times a week at bed time, mitchem day to day. I used to have a shower and get smelly quickly but this routine completely changed my life, the scrubbing really seems to help(I don’t do it every time as skin sensitive, once a week is enough but I use the soap for every shower). I also use a sanex sensitive shower gel after the soap as I don’t like the soapy residue feel.

easylikeasundaymorn · 06/11/2023 16:40

JustAMinutePleass · 06/11/2023 16:20

But remember - active people like us do sweat and it’s our smell that’s the natural one. By all means work to fix it but don’t take criticism from lazy gits who never work up a sweat!

?????
what has this got to do with anything?
OP hasn't specified whether she is particularly active or not, if anything she's said one of the most noticeable examples is when she's been sleeping!
And as far as I can see nobody on the thread has suggested she shouldn't be sweating at all....she's not prince Andrew.

ColdSpirit · 06/11/2023 16:43

My sympathy OP this must be a nightmare! X

Wetblanket78 · 06/11/2023 16:44

Do you drink plenty of fluids? If you don't drink enough when you sweat the smell is stronger. Eating foods like pineapple and berries can make you smell good. I used to get a smell down there. But I learned eating a lot of broccoli which I used to have a few times a week can cause you to smell. Only have it about once a week now and the smell has stopped. Always some shower gels cause me to sweat more. I'm ok with sanex so stick with that.

jools7 · 06/11/2023 16:48

I use a product called Odour Ban you can buy it online it's a life saver, give it a try. Xxx

Multipleexclamationmarks · 06/11/2023 16:50

My adult daughter had this. Mitcham solid deodorant helped (not spray or roll on) and anti bac soap.
She was also diagnosed with PCOS, this also had an impact. Would be worth mentioning to your doctor.

Humbugg · 06/11/2023 16:51

I think you need to see a different GP and get proper help from a kind and knowledgable GP.

don’t give up OP! Good luck

momonpurpose · 06/11/2023 16:52

ElleCapitaine · 06/11/2023 14:43

My friend had her armpits botoxed and that stopped her very heavy sweating. I don’t know if that would help?

I know a person too and it full stopped after the botox. Possible insurance will cover it as it's a medical reason

Sheraprincessofflower · 06/11/2023 16:57

I’m thinking it’s probably a hormone issue and your GP may be able to help. While you wait for an appointment, try Pit Rok deodorant (the standard crystal one, not a spray). Apply it onto wet armpits after you shower, leave to dry, then apply your usual antiperspirant deodorant over the top. For most people, the Pit Rok is enough, but I’m thinking it might just be an extra layer of protection for you - it kills the bacteria that make the smell. I would think that that under normal deodorant would make at least a bit of a difference to how quickly the smell appears?

Gcsunnyside23 · 06/11/2023 17:00

Definitely go back to your GP. Thyroid issues, kidneys, hormones can all cause strong body odour

OccupantofInterplanetaryCraft · 06/11/2023 17:04

I wonder whether using hi is run on your body would help? It’s what you use before you have surgery so I presume it’s designed to strip any bacteria from your skin ( I know there should be some there but you know what I mean)

It definitely gives you a ‘clean’ feel

Ktime · 06/11/2023 17:05

I would also investigate if it’s your diet.

When I go through periods of eating lots of ultra processed foods, it effects the amount I sweat, smell, sleep, flushes.

Then it all normalises when I move back to eating very little UPFs.

Dustybarn · 06/11/2023 17:06

Definitely a trip to the Dr needed. I find that Clarins or Clinique deodorant works much better than Mitchum but it is pricey. While waiting for your appointment try to eat fruit and veg and avoid fish and dairy and see if that helps. Fish is not your friend!

Usernamen · 06/11/2023 17:07

Don’t go back to the same GP unless you can go in the afternoon and she can smell you, as PP suggested.

Otherwise see a different GP and insist on a referral. Don’t be fobbed off again!

ohnoisaid2much · 06/11/2023 17:17

I’ve tried shower gels, jelly’s, creams, washes, washing up liquid, even tried cif once as a particularly desperate 18 year old, all types or deodorants and antiperspirant, roll on, cream, spray, perfume, body spray, no products etc. I still fucking stink.

There's a lot of suggestions for products here and some of them may work but how you use them is key.

Externally

  • exfoliate with a fresh washcloth when you shower remembering the bottoms of feet and between toes, belly button and behind ears. Use antibacterial soap like dettol bars or Irish spring even Palmolive has one
  • make sure your armpits and any crevices are totally dry before applying deodorants and getting dressed
  • put shoe powder in your shoes overnight and rotate the ones you wear not the same pair everyday
  • ensure your laundry is fully dry and clean your washing machine thoroughly more often, leave the from door and detergent draw open to avoid mould and smells
  • change your sheets and towels more often

Internally

  • drink more water and much less coffee I can't tell you what a huge difference this can make. Switch to decaf if you can
  • avoid cruciferous veg, garlic and onions
  • cut down on sweets and bread it causes Candida overgrowth in some people
  • ask your GP about acidophilus to introduce more good bacteria in the gut
  • have your gut checked via stool sample you'd be surprised by what lurks there and causes issues
  • try peppermint capsules and/or charcoal they deal with smells internally
  • sometimes that smell in the room can be from breathing in it overnight. Don't just brush, floss and use mouthwash, and crack a window

Sorry you're having to deal with this

Gymmum82 · 06/11/2023 17:18

I seem to have developed hyperhidrosis as a peri menopause symptom.
I absolutely stank but started using driclor roll on and it’s completely stopped my underarm sweating and smell. Only need to use it once a week or so.
I still have excessive sweating elsewhere however but this might help you if it’s just the underarm sweat smell

Icannotbudget · 06/11/2023 17:23

What on earth can the GP do other than run routine bloods to exclude obvious issues such as diabetes/ liver disease.
There are no ‘experts’ on body odour on the NHS!!
OP this is obviously upsetting you a lot but as a pp asked, has anyone, ever, commented on your body odour. Have you asked someone you trust directly about it?
I ask because it may be you are overly anxious around your odour.
Pretty much everyone I know smells staler as the day wears on, I use products but still smell a bit at the end of the day, it’s totally normal to have some body odour!
