Fireworks

AIBU to think it's better when 5th Nov. falls on a Fri./Sat./Sun. so that the dickhead pet terrifying firework displays happen only over one weekend rather than two as tends to happen when 5th Nov. is mid-week?

It’s never confined to just 2/3 days where we are (a london Borough) it seems to be weeks and weeks not just bonfire night .I think due to Diwali as well and any other celebrations and as fireworks are available I think people get them for birthdays etc too it’s never ending!

YourNameGoesHere · 04/11/2023 21:04

You're optimistic if you think they won't still be letting off fireworks next week and the week after and so on until January.

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 04/11/2023 21:07

I just don’t understand why they make the bangs so loud now, it honestly sounds like a mortar being fired (yes, I’ve heard one).

We had the huge town one, then about 4 houses nearby taking it in turns, 2 hours solid of the dog going nuts.

MyDogSmellsTerrible · 04/11/2023 21:58

I want to know why people wait until 10pm and later to set them off??

I've just come up to bed after having to force the dog out for a pee. And it sounds like the bloody blitz now.

It's no darker now than it was 4 bastard hours ago so why can't they let them off at a less antisocial time?

TeenLifeMum · 04/11/2023 21:59

Our local ones were last weekend and, due to storms, today’s were moved to next Saturday.

EasterMummie · 04/11/2023 22:02

I voted YABU as if it falls midweek you've got two weekends possibilities to find a good time to have a bonfire/firework party on.

Mrburnshound · 04/11/2023 22:04

I think that Diwali is next sunday so it will be 2 weekends regardless. But i prefer it to be on weekends

DominiqueBernard · 04/11/2023 22:05

Good point

OP posts:
BotterMon · 04/11/2023 22:09

I was really hoping they'd be cancelled as it's pissing down but no such luck. Hate the bloody things and should be banned.

alloalloallo · 04/11/2023 22:11

I hadn’t heard any tonight until about 15 minutes ago and now it sounds like every one in the neighbourhood is setting them off.

It has been absolutely pissing down all day (we’ve had a yellow warning of rain) and it’s not long stopped so I guess everyone has legged it outside all at the same time.

All the public displays have been moved to next weekend due to the weather.

It’s never normally just a couple of weekends either side of bonfire night. I think the weather has put a bit of a downer on it this year, but usually dickheads are setting them off for weeks.

My neighbour has some silent ones - they look fab!

Alifestylechoice · 04/11/2023 22:11

Humans don’t need to live their lives to appease your pets!

DominiqueBernard · 04/11/2023 22:16

Why not?

OP posts:
Alifestylechoice · 04/11/2023 22:32

Because they’re animals that are stupid but the only consequence is they’re scared for a night or two. I doubt they even remember it by the next day. I’d rather that than humans don’t enjoy the wonderful tradition of fireworks night

pictoosh · 04/11/2023 22:35

We were at a good display tonight. Public park, long display, stunning finale. Took the kids to 'Spoons afterwards for a late dinner. Had a lovely evening.
We've got three cats, none of them are bothered by fireworks. I've always enjoyed them...my mum and dad used to have a bonfire party in our village when I was young.

We're going to get some sparklers, make some soup and have a bonfire in the garden with a couple of friends tomorrow evening. Maybe a few ciders. No fireworks though. Only organised displays for us.

Starmoonsu · 04/11/2023 22:54

YABU to call people dickheads. I get so fed up with people moaning about fireworks distressing pets and babies. They just need to get a life. We took our babies to the fireworks displays with ear defenders and kids are growing up loving fireworks.

When we had a dog we just took special care and stayed in with him with the telly up loud. It’s not a big deal, people just need to get over themselves and allow the majority of people to enjoy fireworks season. It’s a fun time of year for getting together with family and friends and enjoying the fireworks.

Try telling that to people who have lost horses or livestock due to fireworks. I have heard of some dogs dieing of fright. It can and does have an effect on animals for days after. It's not just one night either, we've had them yesterday, today and will have to endure them again tomorrow. Its not just animals, I couldn't get my two youngest children to sleep through fireworks when they were babies and toddlers, the middle one got very, very distressed.

The devastating effects of fireworks on animals: A horse spooked to death and the campaign to change Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is a source of dread for some pet owners, who witness their animals petrified and shaking. One owner tells Sky News how her beloved therapy horse was spooked by fireworks and died.

I don't have pets so all irrelevant to me but TBF to those that do it's not only one or two days a year now.

Over the last x amount of years fireworks go off for up to 2 week's before the official bonfire night and some time after, coupled with them being used at new year plus weddings and other celebrations it's more difficult to be prepared for.

pictoosh · 04/11/2023 23:23

I keep hearing about these two weeks of fireworks on mumsnet. I live in averagetown and can honestly say it's nothing like that here. They've been going off tonight and will again tomorrow night because that's the 5th...can't say they go on for days. They don't.

I do think 'some people' just enjoy moaning.

Good for you- you do realise your experience is just yours?

Whentheboatcomein · 04/11/2023 23:34

Around here (Cheshire) they last from when they go on sale right through to early January. Makes me hate this time of year as my poor dog suffers. We do everything to keep him calm but they’re so loud now. I don’t ever remember fireworks being this loud when I was a kid.

Do you also have the same moronic opinion about war veterans who might have ptsd that's triggered by loud explosions of fireworks. Or should they also just suck it up and get over it cos it's only a few days a year of celebrating bonfire night traditions! They should be banned from public sale and left to organised displays only. Preferably silent ones too. My poor Cat was terrified last NYE with the amount of loud fireworks that were constantly blasting off. He was laid on top of me hiding under his blanket trembling away. Never bothered him before but they seem much more louder now. A horse where I live bolted in fear from the noise of fireworks a few years ago. Bolted headfirst into the fence surrounding his field and broke his neck and had to be pts.

Lilacdressinggown · 04/11/2023 23:41

I and many many people love fireworks. They are great fun.
In this day and age of climate emergency no one should be getting dogs as pets (with the exception of assistance and working dogs) and no one needs a horse. I always feel sorry for horses having to lug people about all the time. They obviously don’t like to do it or you wouldn’t have to “break” a horse in order to ride it.

Count your blessings, I live in a rural setting so not to bad.
But drive to the next town a few miles away and you're as likely to get one chucked at you in broad daylight as you are to be woken up at 2 in the morning.

My DC played clips of fireworks from the Internet via their TV when their puppy was young so now it's not overly fussed by most and will happily watch out of the window but it's the random burst in the early hours that startle it.

Genuine question, if you think no one should get a pet unless for health reasons, What should we do all with all the dogs and cats who are in need of rescuing? (Both my pets are rescues)

Regardless, a) neither pets care about fireworks but b) some dicks near me are letting off fireworks right now (v built up residential area) which has woken me up.

So, no I'm not feeling too happy about fireworks right now. If people want to celebrate with fireworks fine but maybe let's keep them to vaguely social hours and in safe places eg not in people's backyards at midnight.

Just to point out lots of dogs & cats aren’t bothered by fireworks.
