Fireworks

AIBU to think it's better when 5th Nov. falls on a Fri./Sat./Sun. so that the dickhead pet terrifying firework displays happen only over one weekend rather than two as tends to happen when 5th Nov. is mid-week?

But drive to the next town a few miles away and you're as likely to get one chucked at you in broad daylight as you are to be woken up at 2 in the morning.

Where on earth is this?

I grew up in a pretty dodgy part of London & it wasn’t normal to get fireworks thrown at people!

grottyb · 05/11/2023 00:10

Regardless, a) neither pets care about fireworks but b) some dicks near me are letting off fireworks right now (v built up residential area) which has woken me up.

Thats illegal isn’t it time wise?

We live in an area where I have seen several fireworks being thrown at us. My kids have had them thrown at them several times when I wasnt there.
Tonight had been amazingly quite. Thank fuck

Spookymormonhelldream · 05/11/2023 00:16

@grottyb I wonder if you're my neighbour. I've just been woken by dickheads letting off fireworks, my dog is going nuts and im pissed off to be woken.
I thought fireworks weren't on sale to the general public any more or did I imagine that?
Anyway fuck the bastards who have been setting off fucking fireworks at midnight. Cunts

Not London....

But you're correct, I grew up closer to the area it's happening in now and it would never of occurred me, or any of my friends to misuse fireworks like they are misused today.

Because they’re animals that are stupid but the only consequence is they’re scared for a night or two. I doubt they even remember it by the next day. I’d rather that than humans don’t enjoy the wonderful tradition of fireworks night

Stupid comment

I know it doesn't help wild and farm animals at all - but for your home animals, here is my tip. Find a youtube video of firework sounds. Put it on at very, very low volume, then do something fun with your pet or play/cuddle them in the same room. Repeat often, increasing the sound as they learn to cope with it. Your aim is to make it a sound they are used to hearing often and it's no longer a weird one when they hear it (although, granted, real ones might be "felt", but at least they will hopefully not panic quite so much).

foxlover47 · 05/11/2023 00:55

My dogs don't give a toss about them , my horses luckily don't either but I'm
Pretty sure plenty of people
Do , many with various health conditions and traumatic pasts do ,
I would rather see them only at proper displays so the general
Public who don't enjoy them and the animals that are scared of them don't have to put up with them for weeks on end

Perhaps it’s because where I am you could get in serious strife throwing it at the wrong person. I’m surprised the police do nothing.

@Crumpleton I saw a lot of crime growing up, it was very normal but never fireworks thrown at people.

grottyb · 05/11/2023 08:25

@Spookymormonhelldream we do get lots of fireworks going off but people pretty much always observe the curfew which I think is 11pm unless certain days eg NYE. I thought sales were restricted too but don’t actually know.

SquirmOfEels · 05/11/2023 08:33

It's rarely confined to Bonfire Night itself, but I do agree that when it falls at a weekend it is better contained.

Plus having the only dry night in a sea of wet forecasts on the Saturday

There's definitely some stupid animals about.

BattyNora1 · 05/11/2023 12:22

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard, I agree, I don't know why they have to be so loud.

MyDogSmellsTerrible 1 & 2 AM they were going off here.

Starmoonsu we have the telly on very loud but unfortunately the dog still hears them!

Crumpleton we have been playing firework clips for our dog and for the quieter ones they are ok with now but not the great big loud ones.

We have had them for weeks here, going off at random times even 3am!

LemonPeonies · 05/11/2023 12:45

@Alifestylechoice of course animals remember things, how on earth do you think police dogs, working dogs for disabled people etc are trained? You seem to be lacking any intellect yourself.

I and many many people love fireworks. They are great fun.
In this day and age of climate emergency no one should be getting dogs as pets (with the exception of assistance and working dogs) and no one needs a horse. I always feel sorry for horses having to lug people about all the time. They obviously don’t like to do it or you wouldn’t have to “break” a horse in order to ride it.

You sound fun.

Alifestylechoice · 05/11/2023 18:53

Bolted headfirst into the fence surrounding his field and broke his neck and had to be pts

Well that is a good example of animals being pretty stupid tbf!

My cat is a bit scared but she’s hardly gonna be traumatised for life.

Leobynature · 06/11/2023 01:11

Every bloody year… the same discussion!
I love fireworks and happily let them off, although in a fenced garden, so not at people and at a reasonable hour. It’s unfortunate your animal is scared but that’s definitely a YOU problem.
If they made fireworks illegal than that will open it up to a black market which would be unregulated and dangerous…is that a good idea for fireworks.

I cannot believe people are genuinely this selfish. You know that your actions will leave animals terrified and potentially kill them, but you don’t care and think that’s the humans problem. Unbelievable.

Do you honestly think that it's just pets that are affected? What about birds and other wildlife?

I think that a few licensed displays are ok, but I don't think that they should be available for idiots to buy and set off in their gardens, causing a nuisance to all their neighbours.

MidnightMeltdown · 06/11/2023 01:34

In fact theres petition going on at the moment to ban the sale of fireworks to the general public. If it reaches 100,000 signatures it will be debated in parliament

YABU to call people dickheads. I get so fed up with people moaning about fireworks distressing pets and babies. They just need to get a life. We took our babies to the fireworks displays with ear defenders and kids are growing up loving fireworks.

When we had a dog we just took special care and stayed in with him with the telly up loud. It’s not a big deal, people just need to get over themselves and allow the majority of people to enjoy fireworks season. It’s a fun time of year for getting together with family and friends and enjoying the fireworks.

Or maybe you need to get over yourself and recognise that the vast majority of the population would support a ban on the sale of fireworks?

The selfish few shouldn't be allowed to impose them on everybody else in residential areas.

Nope.

The effects of fireworks are for far far longer than a night or two and once an animal has been scared there is a much higher chance of them being panicked by sudden loud noises again. Phobias develop easily and 'spread', from fireworks to thunder to heavy wheely bins, cars backfiring... and a panicked animal can hurt themselves, or cause accidents.

They don't forget it the next day, that isn't how mammalian brains work.

Even ignoring the animals - I assume you also don't care about the PTSD sufferers triggered by sudden, unpredictable, loud noises. Figures for that suggest 1 in 25 people suffer - so on your street, theres likely someone terrified at every firework. Are they stupid too?

OldTinHat · 06/11/2023 07:55

County town fireworks were cancelled from this weekend to mid December.
