To think this was weird

Was driving home this evening and a car was following behind for quite a distance. Got home and the driver pulled up over a drive behind were I was parking. I parked up, got out, got my stuff out my car and driver got out of his car and approached me asking me where a specific number house was on this road. I told him it was on this side and further down the road nearer to the bottom. He said ‘oh it’s right down there? which one is yours, what number do you live at?’ Aibu to think that’s a weird thing to ask? I’ve never seen him before in my life

Definitely. Did you get his registration?

BogHag · 04/11/2023 19:35

It is a bit odd. It’s one of those things that could very easily be innocent (he was maybe just trying to get his bearings) but I think I would have raised an eyebrow too.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 04/11/2023 19:37

YANBU That's very creepy behaviour.

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 04/11/2023 19:37

Yes very weird.... did you respond?

Sundayskye · 04/11/2023 19:38

I didn’t get his reg, was quite dark but could tell what kind of car it was. When I walked off he got back in and was slowly going down the road

Weird
When I was followed late one night (admittedly also with some threatening behaviour), I just drove to the police station rather than home.
I live in an apartment block, but no way did I want the occupants of the car knowing where I lived.

Cumbrianlife · 04/11/2023 19:43

I'm not easily spooked and DH works nights but I'd be quite concerned if I was alone tonight after that.

Howbizarre22 · 04/11/2023 19:44

Benefit fraud investigator maybe?

RedDawg · 04/11/2023 19:44

He may of asked door number so he could count the houses until he got to right house. For example if you lived at number 52 and he was looking for 70 he could work out easier which house it is. It’s harder finding houses in the dark that don’t have clear door numbers. Could be innocent, but always best to be aware x

dragonseal · 04/11/2023 19:46

Weird. Hope you didn't give your number.

Sundayskye · 04/11/2023 19:47

I thought that about counting the door numbers but the one he was looking for was a few houses up from the very last one on the street, which I told him

Irridescantshimmmer · 04/11/2023 19:50

Thats more than very wierd.

First of all, before telling him which house I lived at, if this had happened to me I would ask him why he wants to know because if thats not wierd, I don't know what is.

InterestedDad37 · 04/11/2023 19:52

It's creepy and weird ... worth logging it with police just in case that person has some previous record of this type of behaviour.

CaroleSinger · 04/11/2023 19:54

No reason whatsoever for him to know which house you live in. That's totally weird and creepy.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 04/11/2023 19:58

It's weird, but it's the kind of thing I can imagine my dad saying while trying to get his bearings or something. It'd be completely innocent, he just wouldn't realise how dodgy it sounded. So hopefully this guy was just clueless rather than sinister!

J316 · 04/11/2023 20:00

Howbizarre22 · 04/11/2023 19:44

Benefit fraud investigator maybe?

Probably innocent and wanted to count the numbers down but I don’t blame you for being jumpy.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 04/11/2023 20:04

Sounds like a ham-fisted private detective.

HolidayHollie · 04/11/2023 20:11

Perhaps an enquiry agent or process sever

Discwriter · 04/11/2023 20:15

What did you say OP? Do you have an expensive car perhaps?

LadyOfTheCanyon · 04/11/2023 20:15

Yikes. I'd have got back in my car and driven off.

grayhairdontcare · 04/11/2023 20:21

Flip it the other way..,
I was driving home and the car at the back of me was obviously going the same way.
When I arrived, the driver pulled over and got out and asked directions.
He then got back in his car and slowly drove off looking for the correct address.

Really? Working on a Saturday night and following women home and asking them questions about where they live?

Bangwam1 · 04/11/2023 20:24

The guy was trying to find out where you live, and to follow you all that way and approach, I would beware of him coming back because that is not your average normal creep. Your instincts were correct here.

Sundayskye · 04/11/2023 20:24

@grayhairdontcare Yes, it was more just the fact he asked what house was mine after I told him this one was right down the street a few up from the last house on the road and what side it was on

OP posts:
Dacadactyl · 04/11/2023 20:26

It's possibly a bit weird but I suspect he was just wanting to get his bearings and count down to the correct house number.

I wouldn't give it a second thought OP.
