To use the voucher?

DS has a summer birthday and someone gave him gift vouchers for Smyths toy store which he hasn’t spent yet.
On his Christmas list there is a toy that is exclusive to Smyths… would it be wrong to use the voucher to buy a Christmas present? Theoretically we could then buy something else to make up the money but it just feels a bit wrong to use a birthday voucher to buy a Christmas gift for him! Equally don’t want the voucher going to waste either?

Use the voucher give him the money, has he forgotten about the voucher?

ThinWomansBrain · 04/11/2023 19:35

Why not take him to Smyths and get his belated birthday present, and buy something else for his Christmas present?
Then he'll be able to tell whoever gave him the voucher gift what he used them for.

Mrsjayy · 04/11/2023 19:35

I mean secretly give him money 😄

Shrinkingviolet6 · 04/11/2023 19:35

He’s only 3 so doesn’t even know the voucher exists

Yeah use it.

Needmorelego · 04/11/2023 19:37

If there is something in Smyths he wants and was gifted a voucher why haven't you taken him to Smyths to get him to get it. If he's had the voucher since the summer what exactly were you waiting for?
Take the boy to Smyths to spend his birthday voucher.
Edit : I see he's only 3. Ignore me then - just use the voucher for his Xmas present then 🙂

How old is your son? I would take him to the shop with the voucher and let him pick something. It won’t be wasted this way. I think if I found out that a friend used a voucher I had bought to buy a Christmas gift I’d be annoyed. Or use the voucher to buy the gift but take your son out to choose something from a different shop to the same value as the voucher.

On his Christmas list there is a toy that is exclusive to Smyths well tell him he has a voucher from his birthday and take him there to buy the toy with it and say it’s from X for his birthday.

DC LOVED picking their own things with their birthday spends.
Unless you buy it for Christmas and say X bought it, other wise you are getting X to subsidise your Christmas spending, which is just wrong imo.

TheJubileePortrait · 04/11/2023 19:39

Yes, that would be wrong. Why haven’t you taken him already? Confused

Luxell934 · 04/11/2023 19:39

He's 3, he's never going to know or care.

The only person who might is the person who bought him the voucher.

IncompleteSenten · 04/11/2023 19:40

Oh god yes. He's 3. He hasn't got a clue.its fine.

OnTheBoardwalk · 04/11/2023 19:41

Who gave him the voucher and when was his summer birthday? If I was them I’d be expecting to get a thank you shortly after his birthday for the gift he got with the vouchers

why make him wait to get the toy he wants now? He’ll have loads of other stuff at Christmas

Crochetablanket · 04/11/2023 19:42

Oh gosh yes use it. At 3 they have so many toys and gift cards and sometimes there is nothing they want immediately.
I’d use it to buy the gift and give it him for Christmas (I wouldn’t give him the money tbh either as a 3 year old doesn’t know the value of stuff either)
…if I had given the gift card I’d want you to get him something he wants whenever you need or see something.

winniethepooped · 04/11/2023 19:42

Oh ok he's 3...he will not/does not know. Money is tight for everyone, use it for Christmas! My son is getting hand me down gifts often for birthday/christmas...(in addition to some lovely bought ones) he has no idea. This is a 2 year old who played for approximately 20 minutes with a cardboard box today...

TeaKitten · 04/11/2023 19:43

He has a voucher for Smyths, and there’s a toy he wants from there… so buy the toy and give it to him, it’s already his. YWBU to make him wait longer and then present it as a gift from you.
