To ask why people that take half put the other half back

Inspired by a comment on the crumpet thread.

I understand why people might take half a biscuit/doughnut/cake/pie, whatever. They are teeny tiny and can only manage a few bites. We all get that.

BUT why do they think it's acceptable to touch said item and put it back like someone else will want it?

If you do this, why do you do it?

Why don't you take the other half for yourself another time?

Why do you think someone else will want to eat half a squashed iced doughnut with your fingerprints in it?

Even more disgusting are the people that don't even pretend at hygiene and don't even get a knife, they just tear it in half with their hands and put the other half back Envy

Yabu - it's fine for people to touch up food items with their dirty fingers and leave them for others.
Yanbu - these people are disgusting.

And I'm talking more in office spaces etc than your home, but still, homes count if you have people other than your immediate family there.

Happens loads in my office. “I only want half, do you want to share mine?” No I bloody do not, I want my rightful full-size Krispy Kreme/biscuit/cupcake thank you.

The half-a-mini cupcakes are the worst, they’re barely a mouthful anyway

Jk987 · 04/11/2023 09:54

Where does this happen? In a public cafe or at home? It makes a difference.

Legomania · 04/11/2023 09:54

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 04/11/2023 09:52

Do you also use a fork? Because otherwise you have touched it with your fingers to cut it.

Why do you think someone would want that?

Why not? If they don't want it then they can leave it
Anyway, doughnuts and similar are soft enough to cut with a knife without holding the other side down with a fork

Haydenn · 04/11/2023 09:55

I’ve never seen any one do this, but I have often seen the half biscuit or half a muffin put back. Presumably these people know it’s a bit gross and do it under a veil of secrecy.

Legomania · 04/11/2023 09:51

Why does it matter if they're using a knife? It's not like they're nibbling bits off

Op you do seem a bit fastidious/germ-phobic

Edited

I'm not germphobic at all. I just would want to eat things other people have had their dirty fingers all over.

Especially those people that may use a knife, but hold it with their hand to cut, then luck their fingers and pick one bit up and put it back.

That is what is wrong with this.

I'd far rather food wasn't wasted and people only took what they were going to eat. Why throw it in the bin when someone else could have it?

...I often take the other half when it's left there by someone else. Or I cut half (with clean hands/utensils!) and/or agree to share with a colleague.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 04/11/2023 09:56

My 0revious post about barely being able to stuff myself with a half but sometimes splitting a half was me being silly. I didn't put something at the end to make that clear. 😬

Why do you think someone would want that?

I though the half I take as I cut, not the whole cake or whatever. I would not think it is hard to imagine this being possible?

cryinglaughing · 04/11/2023 09:57

I work with a woman who can't possibly eat a whole ring donut or cupcake.
I am more incredulous that she can't manage a whole one 😳 to observe how she divides it up.

Ktime · 04/11/2023 09:58

I wouldn’t have an issue with someone cutting a slice in half and then only touching their half. Why do you think that’s ‘pretending at hygiene’?

@AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside what exactly do you think will happen if you eat something that someone else has touched? Not talking about fingerprints/squashed etc

They could leave traces of their shit or piss on it if they haven't washed their hands properly.

Would you eat something that had had flies all over it? No, because you don't know where those flies have been. Same principle.

Some dirty bastard could have just had a shit then a wank and not washed their hands and then come and torn a doughnut in half and put the other half back.

That's why I dont want to eat things random have touched, thank you.

They don't have to throw it away, they can keep it for later or take it home, whatever, just don't leave it for other people.

You sound weirdly obsessed.

Maybe there are germs on the food or maybe the other nicely turned out professionals in my office have similar hygiene standards to me. Who knows?

Happy to take the risk though, have managed to avoid any negative effects of cake sharing in almost 20 years of working in offices

The only time I’ve done this is when a colleague knows I’m on a diet and yet still keeps shoving cakes and biscuits at me and won’t take no for an answer. The last time I snapped and farted off a quarter of a biscuit and left the remainder in the pack just to get them off my back.

Thank you for that funny reminder 😄

You need two hands to break a biscuit in half.

This is why we have immune systems

Yourebeingtooloud · 04/11/2023 10:06

My MIL does this with toast. Then the sad other half slice of toast languishes in the kitchen being offered to everyone who passes through that day until it is thrown away the next morning to be replaced with another half slice of toast. It’s maddening.

My immune system would help me if I were to lick the floor but I'm not about to fancy doing that either.

I must move in different circles as I have never known anyone eat half a donut and leave the rest.
In fact I don't think I could actually be friends with anyone who did that 🤣🤣🤣

Why doesn’t she just toast half a slice?!
