Is it on? How long do you have it on, and what temperature?

I've turned mine on to come on a timer for 2.5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening at 18c. Maybe that's a lot but I'm home most of the day and I feel the cold, plus the morning heating keeps the house warm most of the day. Last year I had it on for only a few hours at 15c and it was miserable. I have a nice amount of credit in the energy account so I'll see how November goes.

Ours is off at night. Even in the depths of winter it rarely/never goes below 15.

When the first person gets up they turn the thermostat up to 18 and it clicks on and off throughout the day (if we're in) if we're out for the day we turn it down.
It's at the bottom of the stairs near the front door so not a hardship.

Last one up to bed switches it off / down to 14 overnight.

If money were no object I'd prefer to have it at 19/20 during the day as I feel the cold but DH and the kids just don't feel it like I do and aren't bothered. I just wear more layers!

SkySecret · 03/11/2023 12:03

It’s been on for the odd 30-40 mins if I’ve wanted to take the chill off the air but that’s only when I’m feeling soft. I’m not bothered by the cold on the whole, and I’ve managed to alter DP’s temperature regulation too now 😂 so we’re both fine with it off. We have Oodies and warm clothes, and if we start to feel too cold even with those then it can go on for a bit.

I can afford it, but would rather not use it if I don’t have to. DP also loves baths so he uses the gas quota filling that up 🙄

justalittlesnoel · 03/11/2023 12:09

Mines been on for three weeks - 21/22 during the day (just turned on when we get up about 6.30/7) and turned to "off" at night about 11 (which is 18 for downstairs and 16 for upstairs). It'll probably be on until March now!

ManchesterLu · 03/11/2023 12:12

Ours is set to 22 in the day, 12 at night all year round. When it clicks on, it clicks on. It's starting coming on sporadically during the day now, but doesn't take long to heat up. Both me and DP feel physically cold if it's any lower, and when it's proper winter we might even turn it up to 24 some evenings. We wear plenty of clothes and have blankets too.

flumposie · 03/11/2023 12:23

When at work it's on for hour and half at 19 degrees in the morning. Evening from around 3.30 til 10.30 when my daughter is home from school. Weekends and holidays put it on as necessary. Just had hive installed at it has made a difference being able to control it so easily.

I don't understand the competitive suffering on MN TBH. Or in real life for that matter. Like people driving around in a brand new BMW who refuse to have the heating on.

If I am cold the heating goes on.

There are many things I can and have cut back on before being cold and miserable in my own home.

its not competitive suffering. Its being hard up.
I dont drive a car let alone a new bmw.

Happydays321 · 03/11/2023 14:22

Mines on at 19 when we're at home and off completely about half an hour before bed. The water I just put on an hour after we've showered so it dries the towels.
Only two of us in a four bed semi, I turn off the radiators in 3 unused rooms. Turn on obviously when we have friends and family staying. Estimated usage is 1400 a year which I think is good. Home about 20 years old so decent insulation.

Same. I'm not sure what else I could cut back on tbh.
I could not pay the rent, but then I won't have a house to heat anyway.

I suppose I could cancel Netflix and put the heating on. I could probably afford to be warm for 3 days a month that way. But as I'd then be back to blankets and fluffy socks for the other 27 days I might as well stay with what I'm doing.

Ours comes on for an hour in the morning and three hours at night.

I'm splitting and stacking logs as fast as I can for the log burner. We had a tree taken down a year ago. It was cut into rounds, and I split one of them each lunch hour. The log shed is getting quite full. 🙂

With help from the log burner, I kept our utility bill for the last year at £1200, so am trying to do the same again.

Mamabear48 · 03/11/2023 14:36

18! My house is freezing if it’s on that. I typically put it on when we get home about 4.30/5 at 22/23 then when kids go to bed I turn downstairs up to 24 and then turn it off when I go to bed. It goes on in the morning at 5.30 for an hour when I get up again on 22. I’ve been WFH today so the downstairs heating has been on 23 all day…

WoodworkingDad · 03/11/2023 14:42

We have the log burner on downstairs so heating isn't on as of yet, upstairs is a bit chilly untill you get into bed!

Dontcallmescarface · 03/11/2023 14:47

Set at 22 during the day and off after 10pm until 5am even in the winter. Unless the boiler is switched off at the mains, the heating automatically kicks in and heats to (I think), 5-10 degrees if the overnight temperature drops to 0.

tealweasel · 03/11/2023 14:50

At the moment ours is set to come on automatically when the temperature dips below 15. It's been on properly for the first time this week, I've been turning it on manually for about an hour in the morning and an hour in the early evening - set it to 20 and when it gets there it switches off. Small mid-terraced house so once it warms up it usually stays warm for a good while (currently 19.5 and heating hasn't been on since 7am).

Saz12 · 03/11/2023 14:50

Is everyone aware of all the grants available for insulation, boiler replacements, solar, etc?
Im in Scotland, so its different but receiving means tested benefits OR having a house with a low EPC rating, no mains gas, and a council tax band A to (I think!) D means you could have really significant funding.

My heating is on at 18.5 for 2 hours in the morning and 3 in the evening, radiators only on in the rooms we use. But the thermostat is portable, so I dont put it in the room if Ive the woodburner lit, or in the kitchen when am cooking, so those rooms would often be warmer than that. Otherwise it will only come on if house gets below 5C. I'm oil ch, house is a fixer upper and EPC was G when we moved in, despite the boiler being new... so have upgraded ch controls and we're insulating as we go, and dont qualify for any grants.

Comedycook · 03/11/2023 14:52

At the moment we have it on for about an hour in the evening, but not every day. That's it. We are in London in a relatively modern house.

Itsnotchristmasyet · 03/11/2023 14:55

I’ve not turned mine on at all yet.

It’s definitely got chillier the past few days but nothing that extra layers haven’t been able to sort out.

TeenLifeMum · 03/11/2023 14:58

There was a day in October when we put it on because it was cold but otherwise we’ve not needed it. There’s a bit of a chill today working from home but I’ve put a light scarf round my neck… might put it on this evening. Usually it clicks on at 19 degrees when we do have it on but I’ve been known to put it up to 21 when I’m cold.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/11/2023 15:00

Yabu.

Luxell934 · 03/11/2023 15:03

We live in a new build, it must be really well insulated as I'm still wearing my "summer pjs", have my summer light tog duvet on the bed and haven't even considered putting the heating on yet.

I think last year we put it on about 6 times in the evenings when we were cold for a few hours but after a while we got too hot, but apart from that I always wear winter pjs around the house with socks and a dressing gown, have hot water bottles for bed and a heavy tog duvet.

If I was REALLY cold then i would turn the heating on, it's not really about the money.

AmongstTheCosmos · 03/11/2023 15:07

Ours is on 21. It is set to this from 6am-8pm and clicks on and off during that time as necessary. We don't have it on at night.

northernbeee · 03/11/2023 15:07

Hive is set to 17.5 5-6.30am and 5.30-7.30pm - and 14 inbetween those times. It was on A LOT last winter but we had fixed gas - not looking forward to the next few months.

Chypre · 03/11/2023 15:11

Hive thermostat set to 21 during the day and 17 during the night, going lower didn't really work out as then there were endless hot baths and extra long hot showers to take the chill out of the bones. Keeping the house warmer and heating bit more works out the same financially but much more pleasant.

aswarmofmidges · 03/11/2023 15:11

It's been below freezing here already , the daytime temperatures haven't been in double figures for a few weeks - we have a well insulated home but it would be around 10 indoors if we hadn't had the heating on at sone points

The heating has been coming on since September - daytime target of 19 ( people always around ) and nighttime 13 ( protects against asthma attacks )

Fortunately it's a well insulated house which keeps the heating bills well under control

Walker1178 · 03/11/2023 15:12

2 bed semi which thankfully heats up pretty quickly and holds it reasonably well. We’ve not resorted back to the timer as yet just using the ‘1 hour boost’ which we hit 2-3 times a day. We’re fortunate to not have to worry about the cost as have the income to pay, it’s purely a preference thing and being perimenopausal a cooler house suits me right now!
