Is it on? How long do you have it on, and what temperature?

I've turned mine on to come on a timer for 2.5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening at 18c. Maybe that's a lot but I'm home most of the day and I feel the cold, plus the morning heating keeps the house warm most of the day. Last year I had it on for only a few hours at 15c and it was miserable. I have a nice amount of credit in the energy account so I'll see how November goes.

I have 3 disabled children 2 of which cannot regulate temperature. One caught adenovirus last year which is a variant of cold/ flu and we spent 6 weeks in hospital including Xmas and new year.

Minniem2020 · 03/11/2023 09:23

We normally wouldn't have ours on overnight, just an hour in the morning from around 7-8 then a couple in the evening around 5-8.
Unfortunately 18m ds likes to start the day at 4am and it's cold at that time of day so it's on a lot more than I'd hope for at the moment.

Thehumiliatedfish · 03/11/2023 09:30

I don't understand the competitive suffering on MN TBH. Or in real life for that matter. Like people driving around in a brand new BMW who refuse to have the heating on.

If I am cold the heating goes on.

There are many things I can and have cut back on before being cold and miserable in my own home.

Lucky you! Lots of us can't afford that.

Passepartoute · 03/11/2023 09:35

I WFH and don't want to heat the whole house if I'm the only person in. So I just have an electric oil heater in the room where I work, and at the moment we use an electric heater in the sitting room for a couple of hours in the evening. But where I am it's not too cold generally.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/11/2023 09:38

On at 18 degrees for about 1-2 hours in morning and 2-3 hours in the evening on timer, but can be changed. Got wood burner stove but need fuel for it.

Mazuslongtoenail · 03/11/2023 09:42

No heating yet but wearing thermals, down jackets etc. it’s about 14 degrees but once the heating goes on, it’s hard to go back so while we’re used to the cool temperatures it’s okay.

If it gets colder next week it will go on. 14 is around the cut off to feeling uncomfortable for us.

I'm a single parent who receives UC. I'm hardly rolling in it. I haven't had a holiday anywhere in 10 years, never mind an overseas holiday. My car is 15 years old. I am very careful with money because I cannot afford a lot. I'm not burning £50 notes to keep my house warm I can assure you.

Teapleasebobb · 03/11/2023 09:45

We have it set to come on for one hour in the mornings (6.30-7.30) and 2 hours at night (7-9).
Thermostat set to 13.5 degrees as we live in an old, cold house but can't afford for it to keep kicking in when it's cold.

Kinneddar · 03/11/2023 09:48

I live in Scotland so quite necessary

Me too but mine hasn't been on at all yet. So it's not necessarily a geographical thing rather than just different people having different preferences

Chickenkeev · 03/11/2023 09:48

None. Used to get by with the fire but no money for that anymore. It's not been cold though, so it's been grand. Will make sure to have stuff for a fire for Christmas. I love a good fire ☺️

cadburyegg · 03/11/2023 09:52

Mine is set to come in for 2 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening, thermostat is only set to 18.5 though. I do turn it on at other times if me or the kids are feeling cold. but at the moment if i'm wfh I'm getting away with just using my electric blanket.

I'm hoping I should be ok this winter as I was lucky enough to build up credit in my account and I qualify for the warm home discount.

PinkRoses1245 · 03/11/2023 09:53

We never use a timer. We just put it on if we're feeling chilly or to dry washing. Would never set it above 16 or 17 though. I cannot stand overheated houses, it's much healthier to warm yourself than be in a stuffy house

wildwestpioneer · 03/11/2023 09:54

Central heating is off and not been on since earlier this year.

Log burner goes on at night and I have a Dyson heater in my office

EmpressSoleil · 03/11/2023 09:58

The cost has definitely gone down this year. I'm on payg meters and it's costing me a lot less than last year. For that reason, if I'm cold I put the heating on. It's been very affordable so far.

I tend to put it on in the morning to take the chill off. I get really hot evenings and night time and am still sleeping with a window wide open at night. So there's really no need for me to put it on in the evening at the moment.

Newthingsahead · 03/11/2023 09:59

Not on yet but I have started using the tumble dryer instead of hanging on airers now and that heats up the room it's in for a bit
Woke up and 15c this morning indoors. I'm not cold but I am unusual and don't feel the cold

Pinkpinkpink15 · 03/11/2023 10:00

HelloandGoodMorningPlease · 03/11/2023 08:21

We don’t have central heating, so no idea what the temperature is indoors. We light the log burner when it gets chilly and keep all the doors open downstairs. We live in a partly Victorian cottage so dehumidifiers are more valuable than heating. We run one at the top of the stairs and one off of the kitchen. No heating in the bedroom and window open most of the year. The dehumidifiers help our home feel warm and cosy and we have a couple of calor gas heaters and electric plug in radiators for really cold snaps.

@HelloandGoodMorningPlease

are you turning the dehumidifiers off when you open the windows?

if not they're working overtime to try to dehumidify the planet

minipie · 03/11/2023 10:05

Just turned ours on yesterday for the first time. It’s set to 20 all day but kitchen only (house is zoned). It’s under floor heating so is more efficient to keep it on all day than off and on. Off overnight. Upstairs heating is almost never on, if I need to be upstairs I will use a plug in oil filled rad. We are in a terrace and pretty well insulated so that helps keeps bills down. A bit.

Dinnerlunchsnack · 03/11/2023 10:06

Terfosaurus · 03/11/2023 08:29

Mines not on and probably won't be. We've got blankets, thermal leggings, fluffy socks.

Same as us . I had heating on twice last winter for a couple of hours. Use blankets, winter clothing etc.

People always say this and there is truth in it of course, but I only close my upstairs windows if going away for a while. Dehumidifier does a great job drying laundry and sorting previously damp spots all the same. It's not on constantly.

Thatladdo · 03/11/2023 10:13

Hive set to constant 22.5 degrees, reporting around 4.5 hours a day running time.
In an old farmhouse, barely insulated with oil heating, new boiler within past 12 months for context.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 03/11/2023 10:16

AlmostAJillSandwich · 03/11/2023 08:42

House has no heating at all, boiler broke almost 15 years ago and with the fact the placement breaks newer health and safety laws, can't just replace it, would need to re pipe and find a new location for it, which is simply not something we (me disabled and dad full time carer who can't claim anything but CA) can afford.
Previous years have used a plug in fan heater but that broke beginning of January, and it was shockingly high cost to run, so since then it's just blankets and waterbottles, and will be so the whole winter. Sadly in a very badly insulated late 1800's victorian terrace, already hit the point i can see my breath.

@AlmostAJillSandwich

Dear God, you & he can't go through winter like that!!

how much would the boiler & piping cost to get done?

there must be some fuel grant for people in your situation! Have you tried small charities? Boiler companies who might give you a discount & let you pay it off.

it's so bad for your health to be in such a cold environment all winter!!

PumpkinSpiceSeason · 03/11/2023 10:22

Broken- and new boiler coming next week. Still opening windows a few times a day so not suffering yet (shower is electric). But I'd want it up and running mid Nov.

roarrfeckingroar · 03/11/2023 10:23

No heating on. Haven't felt cold yet (London).
