Is it on? How long do you have it on, and what temperature?

I've turned mine on to come on a timer for 2.5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening at 18c. Maybe that's a lot but I'm home most of the day and I feel the cold, plus the morning heating keeps the house warm most of the day. Last year I had it on for only a few hours at 15c and it was miserable. I have a nice amount of credit in the energy account so I'll see how November goes.

Downstairs our underfloor heating clicks on at 18 in the day and 16 overnight. Upstairs the radiators are on for a couple of hours morning and evening. I work up there so sometimes boost it for an hour during the day.

We also have a couple of woodburners we use to be cosy in the evening but haven't used either of them yet. Our house is 350 years old so gets draughty and needs the heat.

I'm on a mission to stop family from turning on fire/heating every 10 seconds

This is where the heatpump is a good idea.
No arguments as the temperature is just constant the whole day (our drops between midnight and 6am) You can have diff temperatures for different rooms if you want. This is our first winter with ours and working a treat so far.
I wouldn’t recommend ripping out a perfectly good boiler for one however when it does to boilers needing replacing I’d recommend everyone looks into it (admitting that not all houses are suitable for conversion. Works best with modern houses with good insulation)

Weareallmadhere2 · 06/11/2023 14:05

Ours is off all day still. Dont use the thermostat. I'm up at 6am wfh and 3 others in bed before work and 6th form. They would sweat, so I am dressing gown, coffee and fluffy slippers. I get dressed warmly when they leave. It goes on for them coming in from work at about 5pm till about 9pm but only if cold. I don't normally turn it on till I'm cold. They would ask me to put it on if they were cold and I would. Its only been on twice this month so far. I have credit saved up so that's not an issue.

HIVE controls:
Weekdays
6:15-7am @ 18°C
5:45-630pm @ 18°C
730-10pm @ 18°C

Weekend
8-11am @ 18°C
4-1030pm @ 18°C

When not on, it's at the frost protection temperature - 7°C!
We'll manually bump the temperature if things do feel a bit chilly.

Raindancer411 · 06/11/2023 14:38

We have hive and I have it set to 18 over night and 20/21 during the day. Husband works from home, and I am here most of the time with our 3 year old. If we cold, it's going on as I don't want to be miserable. So far it's around 3-4hrs a day.

tartandress · 06/11/2023 15:00

Have only put it on once or twice so far. Luckily we are in the SW so it hasn't been that cold. I WFH and use a heated throw which is fantastic.

Zanatdy · 06/11/2023 15:01

I’ve had mine on twice so far, 2wks ago when it got to freezing. I’m in a flat and it’s still 20-21 in my flat presently, so no need for heating right now. Beauty of flat living, plenty of downsides but this is one of the benefits

Hmcs · 07/11/2023 20:18

My husband sets it to go on in the mornings up to 21° so by 8am I’m bloody boiling
if I’m home during the day at the moment I don’t really have it on because I’m usually doing housework so don’t get cold

but he would have it on all day

I’m constantly turning it down or off because he’s always putting it on

LumiB · 11/11/2023 21:48

Finally had to turn heating on today for one hour as it got too cold even my heated blanket was struggling.

yoyo1234 · 11/11/2023 22:17

Normally only heat room the family are in (electric heater) but have thermostat at 10 degrees to hopefully stop pipes freezing.

AnnieG5 · 12/11/2023 09:49

This fascinates me how people have their thermostat set at 18 and feel any heat? Am not wanting insult anyone but do the radiators even get warm at that temperature? In last couple weeks I have ours switching on weekdays 6-7.30am at 21.5 (admittedly we are sweating by then but it will soon get colder mornings and I WFH so like to build up warmth a little) and this last week set at 22 degrees from 4-8pm. I have to get into bed by 9/9.30 as it gets too cold downstairs!

purpleme12 · 12/11/2023 09:51

Well I guess it depends how cold your house goes down to as to whether the radiators get warm at that temperature! I know mine do!

margotrose · 12/11/2023 10:03

Yes, they're burning hot. if yours don't even get warm then I suspect there's something wrong with your heating!

TheWorldisGoingMad · 05/12/2023 21:59

My heating is off permanently because I don't want to go into energy debt. And I don't want to pay a huge chunk of my disposable income to shareholders.

I have throws over all chairs and fluffy duvets on the sofa. Fluffy sheets, and 2 duvets on each bed and a spare.

When the house is too cold, I press the 1 hour only heating button, put a timer on my phone and turn it off after 20 minutes. The residual heats works well.

I'm a bit of a control freak and don't like the unknown. This way, I know roughly what I use month, and no nasty surprises.

I would invest in spare 13.5 tog or 15 tog duvets. It's much cheaper than using energy, and you can put them away for next year.

Shareholders??

You'll destroy your health and your house like that

Benibidibici · 05/12/2023 22:07

Have it set anywhere between 18-20 during the day depending who is in the house, 16 overnight.

We aren't short of money - if any of us is cold, we turn it up.

TheWorldisGoingMad · 05/12/2023 22:10

Profits .... shareholders.

We have retrospective insulation. I rarely ever get sick. Moving around, doing activities warms the body up. My child rarely feels cold. I blame the nordic blood lol. I do, but this works well for me.

Profits are not split out amongst shareholders. Shareholders get dividends, which is a very different thing.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 05/12/2023 22:35

I'm really lucky to live in a well insulated new build, my heatings on for about an hour a day and the house stays between 18-21 degrees.

Askpo · 05/12/2023 22:36

Set to come on if it did below 18c app says it’s been on between 2-5 hrs each day for last two weeks. Hoping to pick up an electric heater at some point as I’m on oil and I’m dreading having to top up the tank so want to eek it out.

existentialpain · 05/12/2023 22:37

Mine goes on for a couple of hours in the morning until it reaches 18, same in the evening. Sometimes 19 if I'm very cold. Otherwise i use hot water bottles, blankets, wear layers and an oodie. I find dressing for the winter really helpful.

Your house will get damp, living in a permanently cold house is miserable.

I'd rather be poorer than cold all the time.

OddityOddityOdd · 05/12/2023 22:41

My heating situation is that it's bloody expensive & seems to be way more than anyone else I know. I'm currently paying £419 a month for gas & electricity as well as feeding a log burner & visitors complain the house is cold. I'm wearing leggings under trousers & thick socks & slippers with thick soles. Every room in this house has two outside walls and we can't have cavity wall insulation because we are on a hill and there's a big void under the downstairs rooms. If it goes up anymore I will be wearing 2 coats and boots inside.

Agree with you here, I’m not sure why the poster made it a moral thing about profits, or pretended Nordic blood meant they could live in cold homes, the nordics are very efficient at heating their homes,

leaving your home unheated leads to damp, and respiratory illness, dangerous for everyone, and particularly children and elderly, there is no child who doesn’t get cold.

just own it and say I can’t afford to heat my home.
